I'm back, my little story

Hullo, I've played Lineage 2 a couple times and each time I quit for one reason or another, but I'm back now and hopefully I can actually get somewhere. The first time I played I made a dwarfy and got her to a scavenger, then stopped after that because I would get bored easily with the resting downtime. Then I made an elf fighter, got him to level 15, quit again for the same reasons. The last time I made a human fighter, got him to 24 as a knight, then quit ONCE again because of personal problems (and the resting down time)

So a couple of months back some of my friends forced me into trying Maplestory, and within a month I hit level 43. And through all these levels, it was just grind grind grind, but it wasn't so bad. So the thought occured to me, maybe I was playing L2 wrong and there wasn't really any resting downtime! Hmmm! This would sure improve things greatly for me. Also considering the fact I wanted out of MS (the community in that game is unbearable).

So here I am again, back. I looked over the classes and I think I want to go human fighter > rogue > hawkeye > sagitarius. Hopefully I'll atleast be able to make it to hawkeye this time. I've been looking on the boards all these months I haven't been here and have been accumulating some sort of knowledge. So I decided to begin on hindemith, and my goal is to reach level 20 by the end of the week. If any of you have any sort of suggestions at all, please share.

Thank you for taking time to read this lovely little post :D
Welcome back to L2, I've also been someone that has quit and returned time and time again, though it was more due to time constraints rather than not liking the game.

Downtime is pretty much dependant on class type, and making a Scavenger would definitely lead to a lot of it. Archers have to rest for mp quite a bit in the early levels, but if you rely on a dagger from 1-39 you should have less mp problems. Healing potions were powered up in C3, so they can be used quite effectively in place of resting for hp. Once you hit 40 you can attach Cheapshot to a bow which reduces downtime immensely and eventually eliminates it entirely once you hit a certain level.

Anyway, always good to see a returning player. Good luck out there.
What L2 really makes hard is the fact that it not only has the XP grind, but also the money grind. With leveling alone you'll find yourself sooner or later in a gap were you want to effort better stuff but can't, which makes the xp grind even a bigger ordeal.

Also i'm not sure which sort of playstyle you prefer and while Hawkeyes are an excellent class for pvp, they aren't that great for soloing (as in without a buffbot) - even more so if you don't want to spam pots and/or soulshots to save money.

Newbie buffs will help you alot - especially vampiric rage with a dagger - you might actually want to delevel to keep the buff and farm for money using the manor. Also don't stress yourself to much with 'I need to reach lvl XY until Z', but you actually should play as much as possible to gather pollen from the upcoming event. If it is like the last one you can make a nice amount of money from it.
Thanks, also would I be at all gimped if I did happen to use a dagger 1-39?

I hope this class wont end making me want to quit again @_@ It's never too late to start a new one since I just began an hour ago. Also, I kinda screwed myself over with newbie buffs. The newbie guide says that this isn't my first character in the world, so uh, ****.
From 1-19 you get basic weapon masteries, and from 20-39 you'll be going Rogue which gets both dagger and bow masteries. It's not unheard of to begin a fight with a bow and end it with a dagger if you can afford both weapons, as it's quite efficient. You only specialize with a single weapon once you hit 40, and even then the masteries don't hit too hard until level 52 or so.

Yeah, given the SS consumption on C-Grade bows is absurd, i would actually stick with a (crit) dagger until B-Grade (lvl52). It's also much smarter for money farming (manor..). But i don't think i would want to start without newbie buffs, newbie soulshots and outside help. Of course ppl started the game in prelude this way, but there is a reason why they added it...
All right then, sounds good. So I'm assuming for the most part I should be getting atleast 1 level of skills, then maxing out masteries (weapon first then armor) ASAP.
How would I go about making it so I would get newbie buffs...?

unfortunately you'd have to start at a different server on which you haven't leveled a character to lvl5 or higher in the past
Leveling isn't too bad even without newbie buffs these days. Exp was also boosted 20% in C3, so it's a lot easier than it was back in Prelude. When the 21st rolls around you need to take full advantage of the squash event, you can read up on the official event thread as there's already some good advice there.

If you manage to do well and get lucky with a few drops it could easily fund you through C grade even with spamming SS and healing potions. Just make sure you know the full value of any items you're selling, Giran or the forums would be a good place to check for that.

What in terms of Exp'ing has changed from Prelude apart from 20% more Exp for Mobs outside of dungeons? I'm pretty sure he'll have lots of downtime as human without a way to regen health through vamp rage or a drain. The event may help him to get enough money together for pot and ss spamming, but he better isn't going to do anything else this weekend then. I can't image you can solo with a human without downtime unless you spam healpots. I wouldn't rush from 20 to 40 to much anyways. It's a very good manor range.

That's it really, 20% is huge (and it applied to SP/adena drops as well). Thanks to the Relax skill and 43 Con humans don't need to spend that much time resting for hp, mp is the problem. My Warrior soloed fine using healing potions, they're dirt cheap compared to the cost of SS and one goes a long way in those early levels. In terms of soloing I'd say the Rogue has it much easier, especially since they can open each fight with a bow (no reason to waste money on SS for bows, even with regular arrows the mob is weaker by the time you have to pull out that dagger).

As for the event, it's incorporated into the normal grind so there's little time wasted participating. If a newbie can participate in it then it can boost them immensely. Just look at how much wealth a newbie can amass on L2Day. This event has enchant scrolls and possibly level 11/12 Soul Crystals dropping, which as I said could easily fund someone through C grade and beyond.

Edit: I did forget one extremely important thing. In C3 the drop/exp penalty for green mobs was removed. As a result soloing greens became extremely efficient, as they die quickly and do little damage.
if you'd like I'd like to advise kain as a server.

I recent;y rerolled to kain off of erica, and I'm loving kain.

There are a few new high lvl perma reds runing around on kain about 5 of them they are sticking to places like dion and EG sometimes to CT as well.

But they've managed to piss off a few people, enough so that they are geting hunted dayly.

The prices on kain isn't as bad as some of the servers out there; specially ERICA. I've been loged on there to sell off some items I had left over.. and the price of SoM went from 90-100mil to 140 mil, amongst other things.

But the players on kain are quit help full, and I'm sure you'd beable to start over nicely there, since I have gotten from 1-52 in just over 1 month.

HE is a nice class to play since that is my main to, the quest is a pain in the butt took me 4 days to get it done. but the play style with HE is great, I recumend that you do Dagger from 20-52, and sword from 1-20.

if you do a surch on here and look up soem of the topics about HE class, archers. you'd see some of my points I've made about HE. and why I say to use a dagegr from 40-52.

I wish you all the luck in the world!!
You know.. if you fight mobs that take smaller chunks out of you but that you can mow through quickly, you will get less xp but more over time.

And that will help with the downtime. Welcome back.
I figured that out in MS, also began to notice how much EXP I would accumalte over a certain amount of time in order to maximize the best exp gain.

So far I'm only level 8, but the exp is just blasting by. I'm suprised how I used to think the leveling in this game was hard (I know there's hell levels later, but right now it's a breeze)
Actually i don't think it's the 20% that made the biggest difference, it should be the fact that in prelude every mob below your lvl gave less exp, meanwhile now all down to give full exp.
Regardless a dagger will have hp downtime and an archer will run out of mp and suck for earning money, unless you're lucky and have an money event.

I started a hawkeye when the last pumpkin event was going along on a new server, i know you can earn quite a nice amount of starter money with it. Regardless money grind in L2 is never something to be underestimated. The best non or little downtime solo class or better race are darkelves anyways.
Level 11 now, just got my doom dagger and I'm enjoying myself for the most part. Two questions though, should I be attempting the manor system right now? And also, is it just me or is there a fair amount of lag? Not the choppy bad framerate kind, but the kind where stuff delays.

Also, if I don't get powershot right now, will I be able to get it later?
I think usefull manoring starts at 15.. you should check out a guide on how it works (search the forum for it i guess) as its a bit hard to figure out. You can pick up your skills below or equal to your level at any time, doesn't matter if you're lvl5 or 78.
All right, thanks. There's a great guide for manoring too in the guide section.
Btw, if you wanna avoid downtimes, try to find a prophet to party with. At least as soon as you get a bow with cheap shot, you will never ever have any downtime again with a buffer. Or, if you don't have any friends, get yourself a 2nd account and create your own prophet... ;)
Double accounts sounds...expensive -_-

I read up on the manor system and used jutes nice picture guide, but it's still so hard to wrap my head around everything...the concept seems so simple (buy seeds, plant and harvest them, ???, profit!) but all these menus...ugh
Hmmm....more questions :)

Right now I have around 52k and I'm level 15, using a doom dagger. Should I be saving up for a Sword Breaker (200k top ng) or should I just get whatever I can afford now?
You can manor in the early levels, just get seeds from Oren. I think its all the way down to level 8 or 11.
Mmm thanks. I'm going to have to wait a bit for the market to resupply though.
There's something I'm worried about. I just hit level 20 and became a Rogue, but some suggestions in this topic suggested that I use daggers from 1-39 then pick up bows. Now say if I were to do that, wouldn't I become gimped to be a treasure hunter due to my lack of bow skills? Or will it become very easy to make up at that point?

I think daggers are okay and everything, but I find the randomness of mortal strike landing incredibly aggravating at times. (and yes I realize being behind the enemy will give you a better chance to hit)

So any input guys?
As an Assassin I still primarily used a bow. There is some merit to the dagger argument, but you can solo fine with a bow if you don't mind the mp downtime (and from your original post it seems like that would annoy you). Using both weapons at once is the best course of action in my opinion, but that can get expensive.

As for masteries, you don't need to worry about that. You should be able to pick up both dagger and bow masteries (even if you aren't using one at all) without skipping any of your vital skills. Not to mention that by 40 if you have in fact skipped a bunch of skills you'll be gaining SP fast enough by then that you'll be able to go back and get everything you missed.
All right, although I HAVE been having to rest for MP using a dagger (using a swordbreaker too btw). And I've been fighting greens and light blues. Thanks for the input!
No problem, it is a little different between daggers and bows. For a dagger, you rest in order to use your skills, while with a bow you rest simply to fire regular arrows. Using skills during PvE with a bow is a bad idea, especially in early levels. Fortunately since mobs are so slow in those levels, you can still solo effectively without getting hit too much.
I was resting because of low HP, my HP usually ran out before my MP did (though not by much). Is there something wrong I'm doing?

Oh yeah, forgot to ask about this as well. Can you give me any specifics on the pollen event? I have 43 right now and I was told I need atleast 5 to feed a large one, and 5 or so more people to beat on it with the chrono dabuka things. Can anyone confirm this? And how does the feeding process work exactly, do I give it to the plant all at once or over time?
Resting for HP is pretty common with a dagger, you can fix it by using healing potions instead. Of course, that can be pretty expensive for a newbie but the squash event can help you out.

I've only grown small squash thus far (saving large ones for the end) but I can tell you how to grow that one at least. You find a nice deserted spot and double click on the seed, and a squash plant will appear. You target the plant and double click pollen in your inventory, feeding it a total of 5 times. The squash instantly grows larger and indicates that it's ready to be destroyed. The speed of it doesn't seem to matter.

At level 20, you should be able to get decent prizes from just about anything. Even selling the pollen directly (at 30-40k on Kain) can get you a nice profit if you don't want to gamble on squash drops.
Seeing how I'm possibly nearing my next D grade weapon upgrade (either through squash prizes or hard earned adena) I decided to go with either a Maingauche or Dark Elven Bow, though I'm stuck on which one to go with. I know bows are more expensive because of arrow cost, but is that really going to screw me over in the end? (I'm not going to be using SS either)
Greetings,

Good greif how much attention can you get ?

Well it all depends on your playstyle. Go for the bow if you like kitting, and buy the dagger if you like hand to hand combat.

No SS, I'd go dagger, faster and more reliable.

Bows have a few drawbacks. First of all is thje aforementioned SS usage. There are bows that will eat 10 ss per shot making them very expensive to use.

Another lesser known problem with bows is that the more powerful a bow is, the more mp it will drain per shot. This will leave the bow user who goes for the most expensive bow sitting on the ground a lot of time. So it might be wise to grade up gradually instead. Or keep a good dagger handy to use for hunting when your mp is gone.
What attention? Only 3 people replied :(

I'm just paranoid about making these kinds of desicions, sorry. Thanks for that bit of info though, it does help

Yes but you have 15 replies in your 34 reply thread (oh, wait, i just made it a 35). That's a whole lot of thread camping.

But then you admitted your fault, wich pretty much explains this. Hello, I'm Lortas and I am a paranoïd.

The arrow cost doesn't amount to much, it's the SS cost that will kill you on bows. Personally I would take the bow over the dagger in that case as you tend to take a lot of hits while using a dagger. If you find certain slow moving mobs you can avoid being hit entirely using a bow, even without SS (don't expect this to continue after level 40 though, mobs get fast).

The mp downtime can kill you though, so if you can't stand having to rest fairly often you'd be better off going with the dagger and spending money on healing potions. Usually the mp downtime won't be too bad if you avoid using the most expensive D grade bows. Thankfully that's not an issue at C as Cheapshot becomes available and basically eliminates mp downtime.

In the end, it all comes down to your playstyle. I wasn't sure myself whether I wanted to go dagger or archer until I actually hit level 40, and I'm quite glad I experimented with both weapons as I'm very satisfied with my decision today.
Okay, I'll play around with a bow then and see what I can get out of it. The only slow moving mobs I know of are golems, and they can shoot back with wind strike. What others are there?

In the end it is the choice of having fun in PvP or not. Archers are currently much better in it then Daggers. Right now all they to do is kiting the target while peppering him with arrows.

Muahhahahahaha ! I said it first.

May you be good or evil, Aden remains the same.

Zombies, bats, and trees come to mind. Though I think most (if not all) zombies can attack with magic. I think all three types are in Execution Ground, but that's probably too high level for you now. I'd suggest just wandering around and experimenting on different mobs to find a nice spot.

PvP is definitely something to consider, and archers are definitely better right now. There are plenty of other ways to have fun (roleplaying and kainmotion come to mind), and if you pick a class you enjoy then you'll probably stick with the game despite the boosts and nerfs. I chose PR back in C2, when daggers were gods of battle, and even when they destroyed me in every battle I still had fun with it.
I was considering of joining darkmotion sometime, when he stops picking on me  Always thought orcs were cool, though I'll only do so when I get absolutely sick of my main right now
It's a lot of fun, you don't really need to take any time away from your main to join either. Even a level 1 orc is welcome to join in our raids, though leveling the orc a bit when you get bored of your main would be helpful.
Indeed loads of orcs in the motion are just what they look like, low level zerglings. However hidden amongst them are some evil higher level champions with huge swords that can pulverize all in sight (at least that is the theory). But joining us is a good way to avoid getting hurt of course, not even dark is bloodthirsty enough to kill a fellow motion, I hope. Then again in theory I should own him. Of course I am a person who lost a duel between a nuker and a dwarf and I wasnt the short one.

As an archer you will have to learn the art of kiting. Forget hunting only slow mobs as ncsoft made sure there are no easy targets like that anymore who cant hurt you as well. Shoot, run, shoot, run, shoot, run, shoot pickup loot. This is also good practice for pvp later on.

Archers are feared and respected and the only ones who can tank/kite Antharas with succes.
At lvl 20 I believe I was roughing it on Windmill Hill. Man was that an interresting experience. For the most part I was left in peace however that area is a popular PK spot. I ususally recommend killing Green mobs as long as you can kill them fairly quickly. as soon as they start turning light blue start moving farther out until you do not like the mobs in the area and/or feel like a change of scenery.

After lvl 22ish, I moved onto Abandoned Camp taking the quest from Leopold in Gludin. This is also a pretty popular PK spot so I just would tough it up and try my best. I stayed there until 26 I think. You can probly stay there until 28 if it treats you well though.

After that, I Either went to Execution Grounds upper levels, (Fear the trees) or I lvled off the Breka Orcs to the east of Giran.

At the time I did not use Soulshot either so it is definately possible to do it if you are very poor or want to save up.
