I'd like to see them allow LEs and DEs to sub each other. The war between LEs and DEs has no impact in the game.. and I dont see how this subclassing rule has any positive impact on the game at all.
I can see why WSs shouldnt be a possible subclass.. and I sorta see why OLs should be (although its kinda wierd that WCs are but not OLs... oh well).
I think if they made it you could only subclass your own race.. dorfs would get kinda cranky!
I never understood why all races couldn't subclass WS or OL. There's already so little of them, why not allow the subclassing of them to increase their population?
The subclassing restriction between light and dark elves is indeed stupid - the only possible actual in game reason to do so would have been because the dances and songs would have looked "the wrong way around" if they subbed dancer or singer.
As far as lore goes: Everyone has beef with the humans. Both elves and dark elves, with their long generations, should have considerably larger beef with the humans than with each other, the orcs should also have beef with both elven tribes and not acknowledge human "martial art" as such (thus not dabbling in it), and dwarves would never, ever sell out their precious methods of money-making (BH subclass).
That would leave dwarves being able to subclass human characters, and everyone else race internal with some restrictions (where would the silver ranger suddenly get the voice training obviously necessary to perform as an elder, swordsinger or spellsinger?).
In short: Trying to bring lore into game mechanics is ******ed; people who roleplay will appreciate open ventures for interesting combinations and character backgrounds, people who don't roleplay don't want to be hampered in their choice for technical reasons.
The WS and OL restriction have actual meaning as both classes are (by just being there) such a huge asset to their clan in sieges, but the light elf/dark elf one needs to go.
If anything, I would further restrict access to similar classes: No subbing each other for nukers and archers, no subbing each other for physical DDs (including summoners), no support classes (including SwS/BD), etc.
But that would only be my urge to mix things up, and I can absolutely see how that's an unrealistic suggestion.

/signed.
This applies for many things in this game unfortunately....
btw: there really are still people roleplaying in L2
I supposed that rare species was wiped out during the last re-roll train or squashed under the iron heels of vast armies of bots?
Wasn`t NC Soft just about to change the working title from MMORPG to MMOAGPPG anyway? :p
