Power VS AFK selling

i wonder how many people leave their PC on by selling on afk market
i got around 75 hours of 600W computer power supply
good enough for a microwave of 1000W to run for a small 45 hours
I do it every day. My shop is up 24 hrs a day (aside form hunting and the occassional d/c's.)
I very rarely turn off my computer, and seldomly restart it.

I think I need to start restarting mine more often tho.
Same, never turn off, rarely have to restart.

Just becose your PSU are capable to provide 600W does not meen it do that all the time. Just a tip there :P

Hehe yeah I was gonna point that out but you beat me to it :P Idle, a PC doesn't really use much.
I took an energy star sticker of my refrigerator and slapped it on my pc. Now I dont worry about the amount of energy I use leaving my pc on.

That was great. Kinda like puting a Security System sticker on my my front door even though I don't own one and somehow feeling safe that my stuff wont get stolen :)
Computer always on anyway. AFK shop open for 'something' all hours every day when I'm not playing some toon--it's the only real way I've made enough money to play!

Power useage? Blah.
needed to install a 1000W PSU but they are realy expensive
anyway thats not the point
point is i curios how much power gets cusumed by lineage 2 AFK selling i think it's a lot

Lineage 2, the sole cause of global warming through AFK stores.
Power supplies seem cheaper if you buy the whole case with it. At least in my experiences that is true. Everytime I need a new power supply I just buy a whole new case.

and populator. I dont have one of those stickers on my house because I like on a military base. But I do have 1 on my car. Ya know the stickers that talk about anti-theft devices but theres no actual device. Just a sticker. I think it is working so far.
well it's kind of sick they INSIST to sell items on market while computer is just doing nothing consumeing energy for nothing it's very ancient system to have it in this modern world
If you minimize the L2 Window and as long as the computer doesn't go into hibernate or whatever, it will consume very little power in comparison to running the game. An Idle computer should consume no more than 200 watts and probably less than that.

200 watts? I doubt it's even that. Maybe with 10 L2 minimized :p Your PC consumes far less than a lightbulb while idle.
and it's also pocible to turn off the screen of the PC =)
Especialy during night time, for the light to not disturb you if you sleep in the same room.
Probably not, but its quite likely it consumes alot of power if you have the official client of Lineage 2 running.
Well, I know my computer consumes quite a bit even in Idle compared to most computers. Water pump, and fans plus 5 HDD's can add up. And the CPU,GPU and motherboard do consume close to 50 watts in Idle anyways. I wish I had real numbers as the ones I've listed are of course Fictional AFAIK ;)

My computer room is always much warmer than any other room in the house.
Put an ammeter on your power strip. Figure you're runnin on either a 120V RMS if in US or 230V if in Europe. Bam simple power calculation.
An idle PC consumes absurdly low amounts of energy. Stopping the spin on HDD and starting back up is normally more expensive wear on parts than the electrical cost of uptime lol.

It all depends on what you're running, what your settings are, etc. My fans spin down, my discs spin down, my monitor is off...to be honest, an old monitor probably consumes more power than a modern PC. It's a lightbulb at worst.
If you really want to know what you are pulling, grab a Kill-a-watt off of ebay for $25, handy little buggers for any geek to have laying around.

If you have L2 minimized or even just not in focus (in windowed mode of course) the load on the graphics card will be lower and thus less power will be consumed.
hmm i dont know how cheap energy is in other people country's but consider this a waste of power of like 75W a hour is A **** lot in netherlands i spend even a lot of money to reduse and optimize my lights around my house to LED tech i have my whole house lighted outside for only 19W a hour so if you can see we not ALL in the luxery to WASTE energy like AMERICANS do with there 10,000W a hour no wonder energy dont exist in around 75 years

wonder energy dont exist in around 75 years

Hehehe. Delta E for all things = 0 It is impossible for energy to "not exist." If you mean fossil fuels, 5 yrs or 500 yrs they will still run out. It is not a renewable resource, but using it while developing technology to replace it makes a lot of sense to me. With attitude like that, it's no wonder most of the US doesn't give a **** what the EU has to say.
lol **** us americans are always getting yelled at for something huh. Only thing that runs constant in my house is my PC. Everything else must be turned off when not in use. As Luke pointed out it cost a whole lot more replacing parts then to just leave the system running all the time. I really dont think you will notice a huge difference in your monthly bill if you never turned or pc on or if you left it running. It just doesnt take that much energy to run it.
I disagree with the idea leaving the pc doesn't cost much more than a light bulb's worth of power. To continue the analogy, while the light bulb doesn't use much power, the heat it produces requires you to run the A/C more to maintain a consistent temp. in the room, particularly when you leave several "light bulbs" running all the time.

The amount of money spent on leaving an AFK shop is more than what most realize. I have 2 pc's in a single room that when left running 24/7 will heat the room to more than 10 degrees over the ambient temp. in the remainder of the apartment. It is like walking into a palatable wall of heat when entering the room after they have been running all day long with no one present. Due to this, I run the A/C at a lower temp, for a greater amount of the time. Since I live in Florida, I'm already at a disadvantage as the efficiency of most A/C units in near 100% humidity is astonishingly low. During this summer, the power bill has increased by more than $40 a month since last year with the difference of just those 2 pc's running. I have a ceiling fan and a stand-up, rotating fan in the room, as well as dark curtains covering the windows to limit sunlight.

PC's, particularly high-end units, dissipate a tremendous amount of heat. It really does add up. I actually plan on running some tests using the daily power consumption reports from my power company when I move next month to estimate exactly how much it really adds up to.
No no no, every problem in the world is our fault.
The heating and colling issue is completely different though. Talking about how much runnning your pc 24/7 cost. Now if you decide you need to fans and more A/C than I suppose thats a comfort issue. I can say running my pc all day everyday cost me roughly $5-$10 a month in electricity.Even if I lost my job I could still afford that. Really didnt need a thread about this. If driving to work cost me to much a month I will use public transportation. If running my pc 24/7 cost to much I will turn it off when Im not using it. Seems like a very straight foward solution.
I leave my PC on 24/7. The only problem I have with doing so, is wondering what my cat is watching on it while Im at work. :D

No, that just means the room has poor circulation. You could put 5 fans in the room and still introduce bypassing to air circulation paths that can cause this.

A light bulb converts energy into...light. That's why it doesn't produce enormous amounts of heat. Instead, it throws off luminescence. For those of you who don't understand what that means, the light bulb produces light independent of temperature...hence why it does not heat up a room as much. So trying to compare energy consumption to heat is simply naive.

Your energy bill went up with your wife's new monitor, rising energy prices, and poor central air setup. Take all the household vents to 10% open (a valve like that functions to disrupt air flowrate only in the 1% - 15% opening region - so 15%-100% open changes airflow all of maybe 2%) except the hot room.

An idle PC runs well under 100 W. A two bulb fixture smokes that...

These are facts/averages, not guesses or estimates.

No new monitor, and I already changed the vents to increase the pressure to the vent into the room. Plus, I leave the door open to allow return back to the A/C unit. I agree; the A/C circulation does effect this, however, even with good circulation, that room still pumps out alot of heat when those pc's are left running.

I took the warning sticker off of a grill lighter and put it on the front. So now it basiclly warns my computer is " contents under pressure, keep away from children, dont store at above room temp " etc

My case temp drops to ambient while idle, and 3/4 fans throttle off when case temp is below 25 C to reduce noise. Next problem for heat on your list....is AMD ;)

I used to be pro AMD till a few years back I had an Athalon I THINK 1600 that during the summer in North Carolina literlly MELTED the fan blades on my heatsink. Crazy. After that I moved to sole Intel CPU's . Thier temps are better but in NC it got HOT in our house ( record 114 WITH the AC on ). As such I had to go to drastic measure to protect my computer from heat.

I ended up getting the ZALMAN RESERATOR 1 Plus Fanless Water Cooling System (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118120) and have been happy since. My P4 3.2 OC to 3.9 runs at 41 - 45C and Im more then fine with that. 4 80mm in the front with 2 in the back as well as my 650W PSU having 2 fans.

The general discussion of this thread is exactlly right though. While you may think its alot of power to run afk shop, or not shut down your pC< or have alot of colling etc, the entire reasons you do this is to extend the life of your PC, thus hopefully saving you money long term by having to fix / replace broken computer parts down the road. The influence that running a 27/7 afk shop has on your electric bill? Forget it, not worth worrying over for the most part.

BTW just to share since that seems the way this thread is going, here is a link to a pic of my PC (http://www.swands.com/pics/comp/2.JPG) that shows the water cooling unit I use on the right side on the floor. I have more pics but this one shows the unit. You can also see my warning label on the front of my PC.

P.S = for those of you with keener eyes then some, please pay no attention to my other recreational habits. Thanks ;)

Do I see a Buffy DVD season, Medicine (or perhaps drugs hmmm) lots of cigarrettes, a skull mug, and ... some dead girl legs???

I just sat here 20 minutes staring at a picture I took, sitting AT the desk the picture was taken at, and for the life of me, I can NOT see where you get the dead girl legs from . . .

Or where you just being silly?

PS - is there a DESK in that pic? Jeebus clean it up for photos at least :p

Everything on the desk save for one item belongs on my desk, and even the one item DOES belong there, just not at the same time as another item. If you cant figure that out, I have 2 cups on my desk. Yes I was lazy and forgot to bring my coffee cup back to the sink and had a small cup of soda when I took the pic.

So where is the mess?

P.S = For those of you wondering, yes that big cup is my coffee cup :P

Yeah, it's the thing holding up the ash tray (blech). Cigarette smoke, besides doing nasty things to the human is murder on a computer.

I completlly and totally agree with you on all accounts. Smoking is a nasty habit that is dirty, smells bad, cuases physical problems out the wazzo, and can put a major hurting on a family budget especially when there are two smokers in the house ( my wife also smokes ). If any kids read this that actually think smoking is " cool ", while I doubt you will in the end either never start or stop just becuase some random dude on an mmo forum tells you not to, well, dont. :P

P.S = For those so inclined to point my own hypocrisy to me, wish us luck becuase in 2 days the wife and I run out of the last packs we bought, and hopefully wont be buying any more. We plan on using the patch. Ive been smoking for 21 years.

My grandfather smoked like a chimney. By 55 he wasn't able to walk up and down a hallway without an oxygen tank. By 57 he finally quit smoking... By 60 he kept a small bucket next to the bed for what still came up out of his lungs each night. We would go to visit, and he would wake at 5 in the morning because it would take an hour for his lungs to adjust to more rapid breathing when he woke. A veteran and a boxer, he would sit at the kitchen table weezing the words "oh boy" over and over...if he was lucky enough not to collapse that day from simply trying to wake up in the morning.

It was one of the most painful things in the world to watch. Don't quit for you, quit for the people who care about you. GL.
If you don't turn off the computer for AFK times otherwise, running an AFK shop minimized in the background doesn't affect the overall power consumption of the system for any meaningful amount. If, on the other hand, you are used to turning off the system when not actively using it (i.e. for the nights, for several hours of AFK or so) you'll notice a difference. While an idle computer system generally requires less power than a TV on standby, it's not running without any power.

And lightbulbs, depending on what kind of a bulb it is, can generate immense amounts of heat. You wouldn't want to touch one of mine for a few minutes after it's been turned off. The heat from the bulb disperses rapidly, however, due to the size of the heated surface, and doesn't really affect room temperature (unless you're talking halogen). Powersaving bulbs generate less heat, which is in fact the main reason they both save power and last longer.

80 W running an additional 12 hrs is generally insignificant on the average power bill. I wouldn't know if it was there one month or not. And lightbulbs may get hot to the touch, but nothing a cloth can't prevent you from grabbing. The chemistry involved is still not the generation of light through a heated source. Radiation from tungsten, I assure you, occurs at much higher temperatures. It's like comparing your lightbulb to your oven. My point stands, you cannot compare energy consumption to heat.

Yeah, but is your router!? Erm >.>

I hear the difference of my notebook fan noise levels between AFK shop minimized in background and no Lineage run. I guess, the notebook fan speed is affected by the power dissipation (and, so, power consumption).
Certainly, but you cannot simply broadly suggest heat dissipation is an indicator of power useage.

The chemistry involved is still not the generation of light through a heated source. My point stands, you cannot compare energy consumption to heat.

O RLY!?

Seriously though, since heat is a by-product of power usage unless your system efficiency is at ideal 100%, higher energy consumption will result in more heat generated (reverse may or may not be true, but I'm sure you already know this, right?). Thus more heat can be an indication of more power consumed over time by a system if prior experience shows that running the system at idle results in less heat. But I bet you know better, and I'm now eagerly awaiting a physics lesson.

As far as laptops go, the fact that the fan is running at high speed even with L2 minimized in the background suggests it still takes enough resources to not be considered idle, since those fans are designed to spin down for less power consumption when the loads are low enough to have no fear of overheating. Whether or not the amount is significant depends a lot on how much power you generally use for other appliances, wouldn't you think? Some people do turn off useless lights and household devices to save power, and guess what, they actually save power.

And since I'm not a chemist, the chemistry stuff is inconsequential unless you're actually going to elaborate on the point to make it clear why you're even bringing it up.

The topic is power vs afk selling. Suggesting it is significantly more expensive on the home energy bill to run an afk shop during the day. Heat was suggested as an indicator of power consumption by a PC and compared to other household appliance (ie. lightbulb). This is inconsistent as heat is merely one form of energy. Comparing an oven with a hotter setting on that oven is obvious. Comparing the energy consumption of various appliances which perform unique functions cannot simply be based on a broad definition of heat = more power. Yes; a hot computer is using more than a cold computer, but that doesn't mean it's using more energy than a cold freezer or a lightbulb.

Chemistry and physics are the same thing, just different fields of study on the world.

Read the whole thread.
my topic whas about how NCsoft is killing Energy by leaveing all the PC's ON with AFK and put people on a large bil and compoments witch will brake down faster even if it's minimized
hmm like intel clames CPU's getting cheaper in use in energy
SO WHY do i need to ADD a 600W PSU compare to few years back i only needed a 200W PSU question do it realy get cheaper ??? i think not
only thing you gained is more CPU power VS power use it dont means it's cheaper

Certainly, but you cannot simply broadly suggest heat dissipation is an indicator of power useage.

But where does the rest of the power go? A couple of milliwatts of sound? A couple of watts of light? Did I forget anything? The batteries are already fully charged.
