I'm trying to decide on which melee class to play.
I know Nukers and Archers rule PvP, according to the forum posts Ive read, so I'm just looking for a good melee solo'er.
I really dont want to be a Tank (damage sponge but usually crappy damage output).
I like fast combat and good to high damage output.
1h+shield, 2h or dual-wield is fine
I was wondering if anyone would like to give some insight to some of the melee classes. If I have left out any information or if you have a question that would help you provide better information, please ask.
Also, Im fairly new to the game, played beta then for a week during C2 or C3 (cant remember), never got into the game until now so Im starting out with nothing.
Hey dude,
i would totally suggest an orc type, Destroyer or Tyrant (in my opinion DESTROYERS own everything...) hehe, + destroyers can use any number of combination of weapons, blunts (2h or 1h), swords(2h or 1h), pole, duals even...(like any class..) mix it up a bit, u never which u'll enjoy playing most ;)
Hope this helps

31 (at the moment) Raider - soon to be destroyer WOOT

Well, if you want a Melee with good Damage and fair solo-ability you have a few choices.
Dagger class
-Treasure Hunter
-Abyss Walker
-PlainsWalker
Warriors
-Destroyer
-Gladiator
-Tyrant
'Support' Fighters
-Bladedancer
-Swordsinger
Based on what information you've given us here's my recommendations. (Assuming your cash is limited or your not going to spam consumables constantly.)
First Recommendations. -These are simply to play characters with very good damage and good survivability. Also equipment is reasonably cheap and/or easy to get.
1)Destroyer - Heavy Armor + 2H Sword.
2)Gladiator - Heavy Armor + Duals
Secondary recommendations - These characters have more skills to futz with and require a bit more attention. But they are still largely self-sufficient. Only the Tyrant's weapon can be slightly more difficult to get, but not terribly so.
Last Recommendations. - All that is left is the daggers, and for the most part I almost hesitate to recommend them. Not because they can't solo well, but because they really shine the most when in a group fully buffed up and not quite so well when they are only self-buffed. (Also the 20-40 levels are a bit harder than the others.)
The daggers however are supposed to get some good boost in c5. Not sure how that will work out though, but once they were the no1 killing machines on the servers.
The various human and orc variant fighers all have the benefit of the relax skill. This will make leveling with either one of those races a less frustrating experience as they will have considerable less downtime then other races have with melee.
Another thing to consider is the difference in playstyle. Destroyers just charge in andwhack all in sight relying on their health and skills like rage to keep em alive. Problem is that they are very slow, it is hard to reach an opponent in PvP who tries to avoid melee.
The gladiator got some good skills to deal out fast damage, even at a distance so he can in theory hurt those who prtefer to stay out of range.
The Tyrant however has the option to close the opponent fast and only some archers can outrun him. Then when he gets close, his very fast attackspeed comes into play. Problem is that they dont have heavy armor and are a bit more vulnerable to physical damage. But consider that the gods of PvP are nukers right now who laugh at the sight of heavy.
Yea, I decided to level a Human Fighter, Gladiator.
Im Ravenfire on Hindemith
Congrats on your choice, Gladiator is a fine character to play.
Some final suggestions then based on this character.
1)You don't get any Dual specific skills before L40 so using one before then doesn't gain you much.
2)You get one skill for Blunts (stun) and Polearms (Wild Sweep) before L40 neither of which is terribly compelling. You don't get any Shield skills either, thus a shield doesn't gain you a significant bonus either. The most effecient weapon for L20-L40 will be the Claymore (2H sword) but don't feel overly concerned if you use another weapon. (For L1 - L20 you can use pretty much any melee weapon and do fine.)
3)If you use a 1H sword for 20-40 you can buy another sword and dual it with the one you have for a cheap C weapon. (No it won't be top, but it won't be expensive either.) On the other hand you could just sell your D weapon for cash and buy the Duals you want anyway. (May take more time, but its not a bad choice.)
4)You still get skills for regular Swords/Blunts after L40 as well as duals, so using a non-dual weapon is fine as a intermediate step. Your best attacks come when using Duals however so I would do my best to keep a pair in your hands instead. (Whipping out a 2H and busting up a few skills with it can be fun for a change though. =D)
what about an SK? i was reading (cant remember exactly where) that in C5 SKs are getting a major boost as well. what do you guys think?
My friend, who got me interested in this game, plays an SK. He told me to avoid the class as your first character because they are one of the more expensive classes to play, with the D crystals needed for cubics and spiritshots/soulshots and such needed if you plan to solo. Plus the armor and weapons that an SK needs tend to be the more higher costing ones when you get to B and A grade. He did say, though, that with the right setup the SK are far more better than others give them credit. I've watched him PVP and I'm a believer!
You'll have to either buy it from a player, get it as a drop (lol), farm the mats and have it crafted (don't) or by a lower weapon and upgrade it at blacksmith of mammon in exchange for Ancient Adena.
Try Dion...
Edit: Doh, forgot the option of buying a weapon with the same crystal count and exchanging it, for free, at blacksmith of mammon.
Just to add, if you go the upgrade route, don't buy an enchanted weapon; you'll lose the enchantments. You can buy a Sword of Revolution in Giran for roughly 1.6 million adena, visit blacksmith of mammon and upgrade it for 480,000 AA.

/Amen.
Too few take advantage of the Blacksmith. This is the best way to get a weapon at or near cost, IMO.
THe easiest way to get a high enchanted Claymore is to buy a enchanted top D weapon that has the enchants you like, and do an even trade with the blacksmith of mammon. IE: if you want a +8 Claymore, buy a +8 SoL, +8 BB, or +8 Glaive, etc and trade it with BS. Upgrades don't hold enchants, but even exchanges do. :)
I didnt even know I could access the Blacksmith. I thought the Blacksmith was only available to certain players who either won or completed a certain task, ie Seven Signs.
Ive seen him a few times in Dion but never tried to talk to him.
Thanks for the info about the Claymore. I may just suck it up with what I have, upgrading to a better, available 2H sword and focus on getting some nice duals at 40, 3.2mill for SoR*SoR or @6mill for Storm*Storm.
the blacksmith of mammon can be found in the catacombs during the non competition week. if dawn wins, and you went dawn, you can find him in one of the cats, but if you went dusk, and dawn wins, you will have no access. he moves around. the merchant of mammon is in the necroes, and also moves around.
gladiators are fine, but the bladedancer dances are more popular at high levels. which is why you see a lot more BD's than glads.
