C5 announced as last chronicle in NA?

What the hell i thought there were supposed to be 12 chronicles? Is ncsoft abandoning its flagship game in NA?

crushmaster: Is there an official word on how many chronicles are planned for L2?

Hello Crushmaster! Well, I am not sure if you are asking about an actual “Chronicle” or the expansions for Lineage II. I’ll just answer both. Chronicle 5 will be the last “Chronicle” that we will launch. And as long as there are players who enjoy playing our game, we will keep updating Lineage II. I am personally curious about how many expansions Lineage II will have. :)
Last "chaotic" chronicle. Whoever said it was the last chronicle in general.
The korean dev team said it:

Actually that was an official answer and it did not say last "chaotic chronicle" but last "chronicle".

It is the same Q/A that say, that Dwarves are to be enhanced on the economic side, not the PvE or PvP side.

I guess those answers are as official as it will ever get here.

So yes, the question is very interesting... Will there be any kind of future storyline, will there be "advancement of the game", or will the future upgrade reside on bug fixes, bot termination and balance issues ?

Some clarification has been added in the Q&A that should hopefully be less confusing. Please let me know if this doesn't clear the answer up. Thanks!

Actually the game that started NCSoft in NA was Lineage 1. In terms of most popular ncsoft game in NA, City of Heroes has more of an edge here. (This game is hardly their Flagship in the NA). Yes this is the last Official Chronicle as the Dev team has stated. But not the last expansion (as they have also stated) so you can go change your underwear now.

Didn't we already go throught this nonsense like a month ago?
Not really, a month ago it was stated that it would be the end of the chaotic chronicles, but not that it would be the end of chronicles all together.

Now what they're saying they will keep updating the game and make expansions. How much this will mean with L3 looming in the horizon is anyones guess.
Lineage is, what, 2-3 years old? my guess is they will not make any more big updates anymore, just small balance changes after c5. anyone know if there is a lineage 3 on its way? :)
Yes there is.

Ultima Online was released in 1997, the last big expansion pack was released in 2004 (and they may not even be done yet). L2 is even more popular than UO was, it's practically a religion over in Korea. We'll be seeing expansions to this game for a good long time.

And yes, L3 is on the way but no official date in any nation (that I know of).

Edit: They're still updating L1 as well, so don't expect L2 to simply fade away once L3 comes out. They have separate development teams (though some probably do migrate to the newest game).

No worries... Mystryl already stated that the updates would just be called something else.

I have to say, this is a large snafu on their part because they seem to be spreading a low lvl panic throughout some of the playerbase. Perhaps they should not have made that statement and just kept calling the updates "Chronicles". I mean.. why not?

I was surprised my question was picked but glad they did. I'm interested in how this will relate once more info is released on L3. Makes you wonder just how much more they can add.

I guess Lineage still gets updates since they have been going for 5 years even with L2 so maybe the same will happen once L3 comes out.

Taken from IRC DEVELOPER CHATS:
October 2005 - LineageOne

QMroo - <LadyC> basically, after ep4 comes out,is that really the last episode to be added to Lin1 and how long do they expect this game "Lin1" to run?

Fracas - Absolutely not! New Episodes are always being planned and we intend on going strong for quite awhile.

Only time will tell. ;)

there was some kind of talk about the L3...they had it on the drawing boards as they spoke...but it takes awhile to go from the paper to the programming of the game.

I have to remember where I saw it but I believe they will be showing some L3 stuff next year.
I think NC is busy with Aion at the moment, I doubt they would release Aion and L3 at the same time so I'm assuming L3 is a good ways off still. A couple/few years maybe.
IMHO C5 is the last *free* expansion.

I missed it the first time around...

That's the fun thing about a board. You can use the SAME **** tricks over and over and over again if you do it periodically.

I have proven this theory with the Cake Cult. It's really hilarious to see how many hits I get after taking a break from it... And all the new n00bZ...

Personally if the there are no more big changes and only tweeks left after C5 I dont see me sticking around much longer. New chronicles and added game features are alot of what keeps me playing. I assume alot of players feel this way.
I have to agree on this. They promised 12 chronicles free. This is what they advertised and this is what they should deliver.

As for the C5, I've already heard some unsettling news about the mage sleep nerf, which may put me over the edge if its as bad as they say it is. I can understand if they did it for the purpose of balancing PvP, but if they nerfed it as much for the PvE, then it would really be pointless leveling an offensive mage to higher levels. Sleep in PvE allows offensive mages to solo effectively as well as gives them a place in group parties as the sleeper role. Why the hell would they want to nerf it on the PvE level? Couldn't they have just left the PvE aspect alone and applied it only to PvP? Yet again, I understand why so many people quit in Korea after C5.
They gave nukers another skill to protect themselves in PvE.

As far as I can tell they are just renaming the Chronicles to soemthing else, although I can't see why. But if you ask me, releasing the new chronicles in the shop for 20 euros or something like that is a great idea, it puts boxes on the shelves, magazines will review it, and new players will join the game.

I don't like that.... Cause 20 Euro's is like what? 30, 40 USD? =(
No, 20 euros is like 20 dollars... :p
no 20 euros is like 27 - 28 US dollars.

last i looked current exhange rate is like 80 - 83 cents euro = 1 dollar american = 1.15 canadian.
yeah euro's rule when you get payed with it :)
anyway whats the panic about cronicles
so long i remeber Everquest 1 exist online for like 8 years now L2 is not even 2 years old or something
I'd guess that C5 would be the last major Lineage 2 chronicle.

Lineage 3 will continue with chronicle "6"

What would be the point of making an L3 if the story completed with L2. They gotta milk it some how.. what better way then to release a whole new version with new engine and such in an attempt to start all over again
C5 isn't the last update to L2.

L3 is still a long way away.

L2 is the prequel to L1
noobs the lot of ye!

think of it like guild wars; expansions wil come to the first base game (prelude-c5) and NO although youll need to pay for the expansions, it will not be chronicles. to take a random example: Lineage2 The Devil's playland could be called chronicle 6-8 if they wanted; hell 6-12 even. depending how many expansions they desire to bring out, we could end up with a much larger, more detailed version of Anarchy online with its (now) 5 expansions on a game that was patched 6000 times before a single expansion came out nearly a year after release iirc.

no need to panic, LC. 12 chronicles may have been in the works, but perhaps underfunding brought NC to cease chronicle planning for such an overtly long period of time? then again depending on the content of the expansions, some of them may be Korean-only (its not like it hasnt happened before -- relax server anyone? no, KR ONLY FTL!)

in that regard, trying to guesstimate just what NC will do with their newly acquired Developing time is like trying to tell how fish know where north is. yes, the organs may be there but cats are just noobs.

so wait it out; and NO you werent promised 12 chronicles, that was the plan. hint: WAS is an operative word.
I don't think they're going to be charging for the next 6 expansions, nor do I think they will cease to make expansions/updates after Chronicle 5. I think everyone is just making a big fuss over nothing, IMO they are just changing what they call an expansion.

Though I don't think they will start charging for expansions, if they did, I'd be sincerely ticked. Maybe they've never promised that expansions will always be free, but it has been one of their selling points and you basically just assume (in good faith) that they always will be. I, for one, refuse to pay for expansions. I payed $40 for the game once and I've been giving them $14 a month ever since, I am not going to pay another $30 just to get an expansion. That was a huge reason why I chose to play this game and not World of Warcraft, EQII or Guild Wars. And it has continued to be a big deciding factor for me, at times when I wanted to find another game, I chose to stay with L2 rather than going to those other games where you have to pay for expansions.

If they made us pay for expansions, I wouldn't get them, and then I'd be screwed over in finding xp parties or helping my clan in sieges in the new territories. Pay-for-expansions creates an uneven playing field, IMO, because not everyone buys all the expansions. Those who do have access to more (and possibly better) equipment, leveling areas, quests, etc. It's really not much different than the uneven playing field that the secondary market creates (because not everyone can or will buy adena), only this would be legal and endorsed. I know, other games do it and it's not cheating to buy an expansion, so don't fuss. I just have always liked the fact that L2 gives everyone an even playing field in this regard, regardless of RL cash.

Some clarification has been added in the Q&A that should hopefully be less confusing. Please let me know if this doesn't clear the answer up. Thanks!

The problem with that answer is that all along we have been promised 12 Chronicles in all. Adding a few carefully chosen words doesn't change it much. Will we be getting what we have been told we would from the beginning of the game?
I hope they have more PTS for the other updates. It's a great way to break the grind especially at high levels. It's also a draw. Just for fun and enjoyment this PTS has been the best in terms of PVP. For me anyway.
The more I think about how the Devs worded their answer, the more I think its not a joke. They must be seriously worried over there in Korea after C5 got released and people mass quit. I'm seriously getting tired of their BS of nerfing classes on certain things like *Sleep* that didn't really need a nerf at all, specifically in PvE. Also their ability to over-nerf and over-compensate classes just amazes me with the amount of stupidity that must have been used to bring that about. You notice this trend with every chronicle released so far. Its like they don't do any adequate testing at all. They probably haven't even heard of the concept of Quality Assurance. Its hilarious how they shoot themselves in the foot every time and afterwards dont realize their mistake and do it all over again.
BlazerX, i wouldn't worry about them not bringing anymore chronicles. They promised us 12 -chronicleLIKE expansion's. The next expansions are just gonna be called different. Just like lineage 1 has different chapters(recently they started with something called ..... cross) etc.
In the QA is also clearly stated that they themselves wonder about howmany expansions are still to come, meaning they wont be quitting. Have your seen the lineage 2 final map anyways? it's still about 2/5th bigger then ours. + they still need to add the water and air dragon in the game.

I dont quite think its comming to an end just yet.
Well that remains to be seen. We'll have to see how much C5 has an effect on the player base. Personally, I think its going to be a negative impact.
I think you guys are just thinking to deep into this. There will most likely be more updates just not called chronicles. As someone said earlier in this thread, they will be seperate named expansions, like other games have. "Lineage 2: Bla Bla Bla" Why stress and [censored] over this now, wait and see what happens before you assume to much and get your mind mixed up in what someone said.

And the president of NC Soft even said that they planned to run L1, L2 and L3 Simultaneously.

Yes, things can change but there will be more expansions.
Well I've said it before, but L2 is giong to continue to have expansions because of its popularity. It has more subscribers than older games which have had a much longer lifespan than a few years. Development costs for expanding a game are much lower than developing one from scratch, and with monthly fees it's profitable to keep a highly played game around as long as possible.

Today, L2 is the 3rd most popular MMO in the world (WoW and L1 are the two with more active subscriptions).

Wow really? I woulda thought everquest or everquest II woulda beat l2 in subscribers.

Here's (http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart1.html) my source, though my today remark was inaccurate now that I examine things more closely, as NC's recent quarter isn't up yet. A lot of people underestimate the Asian market, I have a half Korean friend who visited there a year back. L2 ads were everywhere and the game was being played in internet cafes at all times (as he said it, half of them were playing L2 and the other half were playing Starcraft).

That site has a lot of other useful MMO information if you dig around.

Sure, in NA maybe. Worldwide? Like half Korea plays the **** game vs .001% of most other countries. Probably the cause of the last asian currency crisis :p
Actually Lineage 2 has lost a lot of subscribers since C5 hit the market. They have lost a HUGE number of subscribers in China and Korea. I suspect there will be a similar reaction here and in Japan.

But your right, Lineage and Lineage 2 are still very popular MMORPGs. Its just, at the rate they are hemmoraging subscribers, we'll hope they got enough of them left to keep on truckin. Its a shame since its such a great game..but it seems with each Chronicle release the IQ of the developers drop 50%. Soon, their little brains won't even be able to function..if it can't already.
Well fortunately there's no way subscribers are going to drop so fast that we won't see at least one more expansion. But I do agree that if NC makes things even worse with the next expansion, and the following one, that this game could potentially die somewhere along the line. No company wants to shoot themselves like that, so hopefully they will make changes for the better.

Oddly enough, WoW is good for L2. Especially the NA market. When WoW went live it pulled roughly 5 million people into the genre that had never played an MMO before. As WoW is so new people haven't gotten tired of it yet, but when they do they'll trickle into the rest of the MMO market. If NC makes improvements to L2 and advertises (we need this in NA, badly), the game could take off in ways it hasn't before.

I think L2 will be around for quite some time as well. It offers a unique PvP experience and it is one of the more graphically superior games out currently.

One thing on UO, though: Mondain's Legacy was released in August 2005.
