You'll notice that when yoou go around killing those keltirs, orcs, and maybe a few elpys that they tend to drop materials (Example: stems, animal bones, suede, animal skin, etc.). DO NOT SELL THESE TO THE NPC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The reason why is because players buy materials for a much higher price than the NPC's. for example, say you pick-up a varnish (oh, goody!), the NPC will only offer you about around 100 for it while players buy it from anywhere between 900-1200 adena. These materials could really add up by the time you hit lvl 20 and need to get better EQ. So, remember. DON'T SELL YOUR MATERIALS TO NPC'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is good advice.
And generally, don't sell to PCs with buy shops up in starter towns either, as they usually pay way less than the items are worth.
But you may be tempted, if you need to upgrade. Consider this a last resort, and do money quests instead.
Also good advice. Try and do repeatable quests that give u free equip to. I did that wolf one in TI like 5 times and got half my armour. What fun.. Hey green mobs give u good stuff too.
When it comes to repeatable quests, Dark Elven Village has some good ones. Once you hit around lvl 12-15 it's a good idea to do the one where you kill fungi to get "Spore Sacs" (3k right there), then head to swampland and kill zombies for "Zombie Skin" (about 3.2k and a lesser heal pot), and then the quest where you have to kill skellies to get bones (8k); though this quest is really hard if you use daggars and mortal blow...
Good advice.. so far i sold like 6 of the mats to NPC. Still not too late to feel regret.. :)
Spider quest too, but for a new player in low/mid NG they can be tough.

Edit- Theres also a lv20 one in Dark Elven Village (though it may be a DE only quest) to kill the quest mob at the center of SoDA, that gives 100k.

You better not try this on your own...you need some help with that last quest...but 100k is even good at higher lvls (hell 2 days quest grinding in VoS only gives 100k adena as reward)
Well, this quest is rated up to lvl 26. So if solo you can do the hardest part at lvl 25-26.
Some of the noob quest that say lvl 26 max will allow you to continue to collect the quest things for another lvl or so. I have never tested this myself, but I think others have.
not selling mats is a good idea. quests are good. but you have to keep in mind that you are going to make more per hour at 40 than at 30, etc. etc. so its a good idea to get as high as you can before the xp starts feeling slow, then find quests, mobs, etc., to start saving the adenas. you will use every mat you get, at some point in time. so saving basic mats = good.
