Can we expect the same downtime as last time?

I have things i need to do that i was planning on doing later, when it isn't so hot outside, but if we are going to be down all day it would be nice to know, so i can go do those things now.

I.T. people will generally tell you if they know. It's an emergency, meaning unplanned, so I'd bet they have no idea how long.

I am working in the IT business for roughly 15 years by now.

When an IT-person speaks of an emergency, it means, that something totally unplanned has happened.

By the nature of unplanned things, it is impossible to say, how long it will last. If they would say "5 hours", everyone would freak about it being so long (no matter what number would be said). If it would then take longer, the boards would be flooded with "you said 5 hours, now it is already 5h5m !!!111".

It is a loose-loose situation. If they say nothing, they loose, and if they make any estimate, they will still loose. And since some problem forces them to "play the game", they cannot stop loosing.

We can only do our best and at least not bug them with totally unreasonable spam.

The servers will be up, when they are back up. That does not take an hour from the moment, they are starting the reset, so most likely, we will already be on and killing each other, before the update hits the board.

You speak the absolute truth. From my point of view, when something breaks and the hardware/network guys are running around like scared chickens, I try and get their "best guess" from them and pass it along to the customers. Sometimes their best guess is "I don't have a 923ing clue" and I accept that, clean it up and pass it along.

The kitty is absolutely correct though when guesses are either long, or end up taking longer than expected. You're ****ed if you do and ****ed if you don't.

I've also learned not to constantly harrass the people trying to fix the problem by continually asking "how long now?" Believe me, they are no happier about issues than the customers are.

Regardless, this is the second time this month this happened, and its only 2 days into the month? some sort of reimbursement should happen, regardless if their eula protects them, its just proper customer service.
at my work I tell anyone that asks how much longer "well I don't know, but you just delayed it by 2 minutes by asking me that question"

I have things i need to do that i was planning on doing later, when it isn't so hot outside, but if we are going to be down all day it would be nice to know, so i can go do those things now.

You can expect no estimate on the timeframe because it is an "Emergency", no one knows how long itll take to fix it. Its an "Unknown Unknown". So get up out of the chair that has the shape of your butt permanantly imprented in it and go do something else.
i just estimate to an extreme degree..

if i figure after sizing everything up, under worse case senario that it'll take 3 hours to fix... i state eithe 2 or 3 times that..

that way everyone wins when the server is back up before the stated time.
