NCSoft support asking for your birthday to reset the password which you can't reset because you can't remember your birthday - Priceless
ROFLMAO
So sad....and with my luck I'll probably get that too or "please make sure you clear your temporary internet files".
Reminds me of when I had a soundcard/network card conflict, I would write this huuuuuuge rant to both supports on what I tried and what I thought the causes could be. The response from both of them was "try the latest drivers" which was something I had emphasized and repeated like 4 times.
Subject:
I need to reset my game account password, but I can't use the RESET PASSWORD feature because I can't remember the date of birth listed on my account.
This is from Mistryl's post, she was pretty clear on that being the subject line. It seems to be a depressing lack of communication between NC's staff, and really with all that other info being present a simple birthdate is pretty irrelevant.

When they don't have a plan, it's as easy as walking into the building and yelling : FIRE ! To have them running around scattered in every direction...
I've been doing a lot of laughing, thanks for that gem of a site.
I have to agree with Splatter even though Mistryl's post says otherwise. State everything multiple times if you must, in bold, in multiple languages while employing metaphors and similes for those in support that don't understand literal terms.
Lol since Saturday! I posted on Thursday morning :/ But then again I e-mailed again to put down all the information I knew and I got an e-mail saying that it would be added to my other e-mail...that's all I've gotten for a response so far!
what i'm wondering is why so many ppl can't remeber when they were born>? does it not make sense to use your actual date of birth? unless you are not the origional owner, which i belive is against the EULA

The thing is...
As i see it use a rememberable date. Yours, your kids, your wife, your mother. Something...
i know ppl that use fake info because they say ppl that know them will break into their account or find out somehow, now none of them have this problem cuz they don;t play L2, but i guarentee if i asked them what they used for info on thier accts for other games, they would never remember
Ah, the good old days (NOT!) of doing phone support... Helping people is not my strong point. :p
I remember one time here at work when I was helping a young lady with software installation (it was in-house software and going through numerous updates). I had her convinced that whenever an update was installed, to completely shut down the computer (including the monitor) and restart. She was doubtful about the monitor thing for a bit but then she did it religiously after that.
We also go by the "Law of Proximity". Meaning the problem goes away as soon as an I.T. person is nearby.
It's not all date of birth. I can remember my date of birth fine but when I get to the hint question or whatever it is...it says my answer is wrong even though I know its right and I've tried every possible capitalization I would have used. I think it has been said that they've even reset some of the answers to the questions as well as ppls date of birth.
Well I still can't see how ppl forget their own date of birth. I've seen ppl post saying that they put their own date of birth (not anyone elses) and yet it tells them that its wrong. My secret question should be so easy for me and yet I can't answer it :/
They do make for good stories. We all make some computer stupidities... (http://www.rinkworks.com/stupid/)
The only thing wrong is if you can'T laugh at them.
A good half of them has double meaning, though. For example, this one:
I was working on my computer one day, and one of my friends came up to me. He said, in a tone that suggested he thought my computer was inferior to his, "Is your computer DIGITAL?"
And that's exactly what I did...well e-mailed anyways I can't phone. I just wanted to inform some of the people that didn't have our problems that we're not stupid and we didn't forget our dates of birth lol.
yeah guys, don't do e-mail unless you feel like waiting for a week or two, just call them today... or tomorrow, or the day after that and so on............
As far as I am aware, no secret questions/answers were changed. The problem seems to be that they must be entered exactly as they were first entered -- including spaces, capitalization, punctuation, etc.

see, for me, i don;t recall haveing to know my secret question because i rememberd my origional password for my accounts, and with that being knowen, it was just a matter of changing my game password thru my nc account along with the knowledge of my birthday.....i'm not sure if my secret question answer would have been correct and i'll never know becuase i changed it to somethnig much more obvious in the even this ever happens again :P
To be honest I think these answers from the NC support are given from bots. Some software scanning the emails for information and calculating the most reasonable answer.
OMG!!! I'm the dumbest person in the world! Lol i started to think that I might have spelt my hint question answer wrong...and I did...LOL! I could have been playing since Thursday :/

That happened to me with my new password: I couldn't remember how I'd capitalised and the exact places of a few symbols, so I went trying all possible combinations to no avail for almost half an hour.
Then I realised that I might have messed up on typing it out, the same mistake twice - unlikely but possible. I went back, changed it, and was back in action.
Here's one for you. I too have a problem with the birthdate being wrong on my account (must have been half asleep or half drunk when I signed up :P) But here's a kicker. I noticed it was wrong TWO YEARS ago and went through 6 back and forths with support trying to get it corrected so I could change the password... I stopped trying when I got an email saying...
"Greetings,
I have changed your PlayNC Master and game account passwords to: XXXXXXXX
I have also submitted your account for a birthdate change by our account admin. This procedure may take anywhere from 10 to 15 business days to complete until it has been done you will not be able to make any password changes yourself."
BUT GUESS WHAT! The NEVER changed it! SO, here I am again, this time completely locked out of my account with No access to Anything!
Think they can get it right the 2nd time? I'm not holding my breath!
This was posted on blah, but some of you may have not seen it lol, read from the bottom up.

Greetings Charlie,
We apologize for the earlier response.
Thank you for writing us with your feedback and suggestions! We always appreciate hearing from our players. The Lineage II Development Team is continually making changes to improve the game, and looks at your feedback very closely to make this happen. Please note that in addition to writing us, you should always feel free to post your constructive opinions/feedback/suggestions on the Lineage II message board (http://boards.lineage2.com) where your fellow players and the development team will be able to view them first hand.
Thanks for sending this in to us. At this time we need to verify that this is indeed your account. In order to assist you, we will need you to verify the following information:
-- What first and last name did you use when you created the account?
-- What physical address did you use when you created the account?
-- What date of birth did you use when you created the account?
-- What are the 20-digit serial codes for all games you added to the account?
-- What is the Unique Account ID for the game account you are referring to? (This was sent to you via e-mail on the date your game account was activated with a subject header of 'Game Account Activated'.)
Again, thanks for your time and patience as we work to resolve this issue for you.

Its come to my attention that there seems to be another fairly large hole in your security, sepcifically, the verifying of a users birthday when attempting to change their in-game password.
There is no limit on ammount of attempts before a lockout is issued on the form, nor is their an image verification.
This leaves open to an attack from a very simple script that can run through all the dates in the form in a matter of minutes.
To alleviate the problem, a lockout timer, for example...cannot attempt to guess the date of birth for 12 hours, once 5 attempts have been used...and an image verification on every attempt, example...a randomly generated image that needs to be typed into a form and sent to a server for authorisation, would both increase the security on changing peoples passwords a whole lot stronger.
If you can guess someones secret question, all it takes to change their details is to guess their date of birth..and thats not hard, hence this letter.
Just pointing out a flaw in the system, while you are in the process of upgrading software re: security.

Something is definatley wrong with the server. The below happened to me. I have changed the below info so no security issue here.
Secret Question: Pet
Answer:Dog
Dog Dog Dog Dog Dog Dog Dog Dog Dog Dog Dog Dog Dog Dog Dog is how many times I had to enter this 3 letter word before it finaly accepted it and let me change my password.
There is a legitimate problem with some peoples information it DOES need to be looked into.

And I thought bots are not allowed: it against their own EULA. So NcSoft should be banned for using bots :D
Thats actually a pretty big security hole, because once you get the right birthday, the system actually tells you its the right one, so even if you can't through the secret question, you now know the birthday. Some of the first steps in taking someone elses accounts.
NCSoft has some weird security policies sometimes.
Here is the link to change ur password: (link here)
The problem is they reseted the password so its obvious that he wouldnt know the password to change his password...

But you need to know someones plaync logon name before you can even try to do this.
still what i dont figure why you cant remember your own birthday seams a little to funny to me :P
most likely you bought your account for Ebay :P HAHAHAHAAHHAHAHA MUHAHAHA
so who is the dump *** here :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Well I know some1 whos husband created the account. She found some of the original stuff/email. But the birthday entering at password change was not correct.
With the help of support over telephone, they found out he made a typo in the birtday during account creation. And the account was surely not bought.
And as some1 stated earlier: their are people entering a fake birthday because there (should not be) is not interest/need for NcSoft to know what it is. So that does not make the account is bought. Your real birthday has nothing to do with what you entered during account creation.

There are alot of reasons why people dont use their own birthdays. Alot of more important places, like telephone banking, use it as a means of identification when you contact them.
Also you must have been in game at one point and someone from your ally has said "its my birthday today", and someone else then says "happy birthday, how old are you". The first person then replies "im xx years old", and all of a sudden everyone in the alliance now knows 1/3 of the info to access your account.
So its not always wise to use your own birthday...
hmm they add Birthday as fail save becose most ->people<-
will not forget that :P and why fake Birthday do you realy think they give a **** if you are 60 or 12 years old :)

And then you STILL can get around it. If someone wanted to, it really isn't that hard to get around.

I can not recall that they mentioned at account creation that your birthday will be used for account verification and therefore it is important to use the real birthday or save what you entered.
So therefore people type a fake birthday (for what reason or by mistake) and did not write it down for later use (if needed). That must not be so hard to understand I hope.

Not too hard to understand but I bet I can count on 1 hand the amount of legit people that would make a mistake. The only people that would not know the birthdate on their account is someone who paid £££$$$ for it and isn't theirs.
To that I would say tough, get a genuine account and put the hours in like most people!!!

You still dont understand that not all legit players filled in their original birthday but a fake one, so now they dont know it. IF NcSoft has mentioned it to be so important, I am sure they had filled in their origial birthday.
Well, last week i was able to reset my game passwords and now i can't get into my main account. It won't recognize my password OR my secret answer. I've sent a request in but doubt i'll ever get a response. I'm confused as to why mine got messed with yet my GF's is still the same password as before? Was this a random database error or what?
And knowing the birthday is USELESS if the secret question doesn't work.
Asking for the birthday as done currently is equally useless. The support web site lets you try to guess it as often as you want, with no protection against brute-force attacks at all. Writing a simple loop around a curl command (or any of its equivalents) with the correct parameters which does exactly this is trivially easy, then - on the order of "below 5 minutes of work" for anyone remotly knowledgeable in shell scripting.
... because it takes less than 10 seconds for the loop to go through a whole year, and thus less than 1000 seconds - less than 17 minutes - to go through the whole 100 years.

I know my birth date on my account. I just created 3 extra accounts for friends and i dont remember what i used for these accounts.
Well, to be honest, couldn't really expect them to do it much faster, the call/support ticket amount must have risen exponentially and they just couldn't do it faster.
