Hatchling Pet questions

I just completed the quest for the hatchling last night. Got a hatchling of Wind which from what I've read, has a medium appetite, deals high p.atk damage but has the lowest hitpoints then all the hatchlings.

I also understand its completely "random" which sort of hatchling I would have recieved. My question is, is this true? Id like to have one of the other hatchlings because their HP goes up dramatically. Would it matter what drake or wyrm I recieved the egg quest from?

secondly, I only have experience with pets from a wolf I once had. He died on his first outting. This was a long time ago, but what are the rules of ressurecting a pet once it dies? How do I ressurect him if im a raider with no ressurection abilities?

third, does this pet need to attack monsters in order to gain experience, or can it just leach without the need for combat?

thanks!
Hatchlings are random so keep doing the quest till you get what you want. Twilights are the hardest to get but I've received it on one toon as the first item. The drake type does not matter but for twilights I've had the best luck with Excarion. I butcher the name but it's the one asking you to kill Leto Lizardman Warriors.

When a pet dies you have 20 minutes to rez it or it is gone forever. A dead pet will soe back to town with you. You can use regular rez scrolls on the pet or blessed pet rez which gives 100% xp back to the pet. Click on pet name under your name, open inventory, double click rez scroll, click yes when a window comes up asking about the rez.

Wolves and hatchlings need to attack to gain xp. Baby pets can just sit and take 10% of your xp.
thanks!

oh, and is the wind hatchling difficult to level due to its HP?
Wind and Star are more durable but harder to level than twilight. The twilight is popular because it levels really fast and does not eat through your budget.
hmm, what I want is most durable. The information I got on the 3 hatchlings are that Star has over 2k hitpoints, Twighlight has just over 1k hitpoints, and Wind has around 500hp

actually i just found this site and it has some good info on pets
That info is outdated, all three hatchlings have around the same HP now. Star hatchlings used to be the consider tanks, wind/fighters and twilight/just for fun. What it turned out to be though was Twilight was easiest to level to strider as they eat the least amount and rarely drew aggro with thier very low Patk.
C4 reclassed wind and star hatchlings.

Wind had lowest Pdef and highest Patk previously. Now they have highest Patk and Pdef of the three. They also have about the same HP as the current star hatchlings. They have a special attack and UD.

Star hatchlings had highest Pdef and HP of them all. Stars in C4 have been reclassed as mage hatchlings. They have the highest Matk and a lower Pdef/Patk than wind hatchlings. The special attack of a star hatchling is a nuke however and with blessed beast shot they can do some serious damage. They also have a self heal.

Twilight Hatchlings are pretty much unchanged.
good info! thanks for updating me on that.

Im still interested in obtaining a star hatchling, so depending on how many stones of purity my buy shop gets today, I'll be questing to see if I can get a star

i'll probably give one or two of them to my clan members, but out of curiousity how much do hatchlings go for un-named on the market?
Well back when I was doing the quest (I have one of each type) winds were selling for 150k max. I think you can get over a mil from a wind hatchling these days, more for a star, twilights you really don't see for sale until they have been turned into striders.

Oh a bishop friend of mine raised his wind hatchling all the way to strider by lvling it on undead. Para the undead then let the hatchling attack. All the xp goes to the hatch for the mob and pretty much no danger to it.
Something to consider...
The Star hatch will kill mobs faster if you use his magic attack. Using his magic attack will pull aggro from you if you don't have a way to keep it, or a way to secure the mob a safe distance from the hatch (like Root, or Hold Undead).

Coordinating your characters fighting, the hatchlings spells (which have to be timed carefully or he will start to melee), heal pots for you and/or hatchie, aggro management....it can be done, but it is a lot to think about. I don't want to dissuade you from it, but it's something that will have to be dealt with and practiced at. :)

An option is to find others who like to hunt with pets. Something my clan used to do frequently was pet hunts.
One of the best ones we had was 9 people, with pets, out in Enchanted Valley. Our tank would hold the aggro, and nine barking or yipping maniacs would take the mob down.
Good times, and it's always more fun with friends.

I wanted a wind (for myself) or twilight (to sell) hatchling, did the quest 6 times and got... 6 star hatchlings :( My friend was kind enough to hook me up with a wind one tho but I didn't start levelling it yet.

About ressing them, it should be noted that the blessed pet-res is really cheap and saves you a lot of work. They're what, 12k? Definately no reason at all to use regular resses.

you brought up some excellent points. based off my class, Im going to need a pet that can take a hit since I have no way of drawing aggro (being a raider) aside from over hitting the mob. It doesnt seem the star will give me this.

so, it seems I may be better off with the wind hatchling I currently have? Im having a hard time understanding why a twighlight would level faster though like others said, other then it doesnt eat as much? is that correct?

if its only a matter of diet, that doesnt concern me. what does concern me is the hatchling not out damaging me (drawing aggro) and being able to take some shots if i cant get aggro away from it. according to my info though, a twighlight does very little damage which may be ideal for me

thoughts?
A twilight's hunger bar can be filled by consuming one food, just one. That is a huge differance from the other two types. I can't say for certain but they also seem to get a bigger % of xp per mob than the other two as well. A decent tank can lvl a twilight rather easily. Another trick for leveling hatchlings is to use a soul crystal, whenever you activate the soul crystal on a mob it draws aggro, kind of a low powered hate skill. Now the hatchling will get aggro back within a few attacks but you can keep reusing the soul crystal to get aggro back. A BH's spoil grabs aggro in pretty much the same fashion. The less damage you do and the more the hatchling does the more xp the hatchling will get. I imagine an SK using lightening bolt to para mobs would work rather well also.
