Hobbies that might suprise you

So last night I was talking to someone and mentioned that I make quilts as a hobby. They were pretty suprised.

What hobbies do the rest of you have that might not seem like a gaming geek would do them?

I make quilts

Do you use mouse or keyboard?
Lol lol lol SirE - made me laugh as always :)

Not so much a hobbie but I love cooking - not the standard evening meal, Sunday lunch, family get together type cooking - more mmmm never tried this one before, lets give it a go cooking
scuba diving,
kung-fu

I make quilts

Do you use mouse or keyboard?

I do actually have a computer design program I use with them..so the answer is both!

So does my mother. She also has a $4,000 sewing machine.
I want one of those... I've been saving up for a couple of years.

Hey! Are you saying I remind you of your mother?? :o

Hey! Are you saying I remind you of your mother?? :o

Um, no. My mother nags me less...

Writing, I'm not really sure if that's unusual or common to be honest. There's little time spent in my day that I'm not writing or thinking about writing, even when playing L2 I'm thinking of what to write next.

I'm also a coin collector, though it's nothing impressive yet.
Slightly off the subject but I could imagine SirE collecting comics, classics of course and worth a mint obviously.

I had a comic book collection through college. I actually didn't start reading them until college. Eventually got rid of them, though. The only thing I collect now are head injuries...
i play loads of cricket like 4 or 5 times a week.
talking and bugging people
Well, I can play the Harp which surprises a lot of people.

Though for my life it is usually the opposite. I tell people that I play video games and they are shocked. :p
I am a tropical fish keeper, Currenly trying to breed a certain type of amazonian catfish.
(google picture:corydoras panda)

I like to Aquascape (trying to make aquarium look as natural as possible)
oh wow :) I would love to have an aquarium if someone else would take care of it! ;)

Hahah I have that problem as well.

A friend of mine plays the Celtic Harp which she says is different than the standard one. I love harp music. :) You just keep getting better Sovrath!
If u live in the US there are companies where u can rent an aquarium and have someone do the maintenance.

I asume it is quite costly though.

:o

:D Awwww... shucks.

Actually, it's different because the Celtic harp uses small levers at the top of each string in order to change the pitch of the string a half step. The concert Harp uses 7 pedals at the bottom. Each pedal can change all the strings of a particular pitch class (so the F pedal changes all the F strings, the G pedal the uh... er... g strings... etc)

The only exception is that on the largest of the concert grands, the Low C string needs to be tuned by hand (so made into a C# if it is needed for a particular piece.)

Here's another interesting little tidbit (or not). I entered the conservatory as a classical guitar major and was slated to add rennaisance (or Baroque) Lute in my 3rd year.

My life changed a bit after I found out that all my friends were in the orchestra and they were playing better music. (well... in some cases more impressive and profound music).
Well this one is probably not too uncommon but I brew beer and mead.

I also create 3D schematics of robot parts for friends who compete in robotic combat (Battlebots, Robogames, etc.).
my hobbies sure as heck arent as cool as all of yours are..but here i go..

Warhammer
Warhammer 40k
Warmaster
(made by the same company, i am not a war monger :D)

My girlfriend
some times i like to make jewlery
Writeing poetry
Miss spelling almost every word i type
Skiing (when i have the time)
and yea...thats about all i can think of..

That's cool. I used to live with several friends who brewed beer (one is a professional brewer). I always knew they were making some beer because I would climb the stairs to the apartment and suddenly smell "the smell". Then I would see the window on the door dripping with condensation.
Hehe, well I'm no pro-brewer (although I'd like to be) but it's certainly a fun and easy hobby. For $25, 4 hours setup/boiling/cleaning and 6 weeks of waiting you get a 5 galon keg (~54 12oz. bottles) of very tasty beer.
I make pseudo-bentos (badly though, I'm just a nub!), a type of fancy packed meal. I'm aware of one other L2 player who makes them, and actually ocasionally talk to her because of it now. :)

And although it's not a hobby for obvious reasons, I truly enjoy digging up potatoes. That's something that's a universal surprise to real life and game friends alike.
Kung fu San Soo (Street fighting, or realistic martial arts.)
Play the flute and piccolo
write (a lot)
Using my roleplaying characters as social experiments
Cervantos
Cane weapon fighting
Randomly googling things.

This is an awesome hobby. And the wikipedia is evil.
I forsee an issue....

Move your girlfriend closer to the top of that list. :)

i also wanted to add that i collect Manga (specificaly the Bersek one right now)
I go dancing, canoing, and cooking usually in that order and usually in the weekends, which has annoyed clan leaders in the past :P.

o.O

I've got several. And a place to play with them.
My hobbies are a bit diverse...although some are very neglected.

I'll start with the neglected ones:

Writing - Mostly Short Stories (Sci-Fi usually) and Poetry. And my poetry's actually been published, before.
Biking
Hiking
Camping
Canoeing
Fishing
Reading - Mostly Fantasy & Sci-Fi

The more recent ones:

Martial Arts, including, but not limited to: Koga Ryu Ninjitsu, Aikido, Kenjutsu, Muy Thai, Tae Kwon Do, Brazilian Jujitsu, Japanese Jujitsu (Kokodo most recently), Judo, Kenpo, Boxing, Dim Mak, Iron-Hand Kung Fu, Aiki-Jutsu

Computer Programming - Mostly Game Related

Web Design - Flash, PhP, HTML, MySQL, etc

Cooking

RPG Game Design

Running Tabletop RPGs

Minature Wargaming - Warhammer Fantasy, Warmachine, used to play Warhammer 40k

Fishtank - 55gallon freshwater

Cats - 2, black, siamese-mix

Birds - Lovebird, used to be parakeets

Firearms - Expert marksman, 9mm, M16, AT4, etc.

Archery - Moderate to decent

Explosives - >:D

etc
I like to collect anime (all kinds that I can get my hands on) and boardgames (play those regularly with friend).

For some weird reason I have quite a collection of Espresso machines, I just like the looks and the mechanics.

I love cats, sadly I cannot have one where I live right now.

Retro-computing - I try to get computer systems like the ones I had when I was younger, like good old Ti99/4a, C64, Amiga, complete with all the special hardware I had back then (Dolphin DOS etc.). Good old times when you sat in front of a B/W TV screen at 3am in the morning trying to get that program working or "only that dungeon" finished in one of the Ultima-series games :)

Japanese food. Not very good at cooking yet, though - mainly because it is difficult to get many of the ingredients around here :)

Scotland. I just love the landscape there, and try to go there as often as I can.

For some weird reason I have quite a collection of Espresso machines, I just like the looks and the mechanics.

you know, I like them too... something about the levers and the seemingly "twisting metal shapes".
kinda late to the dance and pretty new as a poster....

I love oil painting (landscapes mostly) and I'm not making this up! Hunting (as in big game at least in NorthAmerica).

I've also done counted crossstitch for a number of years ( :o--it was a first wife and child thing).

I play golf every chance I get (badly).

I read fiction novels as an addiction.
My youngest child just made me a grandfather (brooke elizabeth was born 5 weeks ago)

.........i have my appointments for therapy on weeknights after work.... :(

The hunting painter, golfing, mmorpging grandfathers...probably be a small club when we all get together.
I teach scuba for fun, and dive to stay sane. Kayaking is another favorite of mine. When I discovered you could scuba dive off your kayak I was estatic.

Flying is another favorite of mine. While it is my real job it really doesnt seem like it. Helicopters Rule! Landing on a small ship in a storm at night on NVG's will give you one hell of a rush.

Newest hobby is working on my Jeep and taking it off roading. Even my wife enjoys it.
I make Renaissance clothing. Though Im moving into making wedding dresses now too.

And currently talking to my bf on msn cuz he's still in Iraq. He'll move up the list when he gets home!

How long does he have left with his tour?
I collect antique books, have a few from the early 1800's even. I also am very into photography (seven cameras lol).
About 6 weeks. I can't wait!
I brew beer and I am a certified Beer Judge. Beers have won some awards, but the judging is a lot of fun. Beer Judges are some smart peeps!!!

oh wow :) I would love to have an aquarium if someone else would take care of it! ;)

Try a marine tank. You'd be suprised how much easier in general they are to keep than a freshwater tank. Up until the blackout in 03 I had kept a large marine reef tank for several years. My only maintaince was a monthly 20% water change and to clean out the protein skimmer. With good lights you don't even need to feed the fish or inverts, they will live off the alge and plankton growing in the tank. The glass was cleaned by marine snails and crabs. And I used a gravity feed evaporation fill system to replenish the nutrients and evaporated water with a drip system. . RO/DI water is a plus if ya can get it too. Before the blackout i had 37 different varietis of coral that had each lived in my tank for numerous years. I probably checked the nitrate levels probably once every 3 months. Never had a problem :) I'd even had to make cuttings on alot of the soft corals and trade them to my local aquarium store for free supplies. lol :) They just grew out of control...

Not too much maintaince :)
And if I was out of town I'd use a local aquarium maintaince guy, I'd have a relative go in and let him in and he'd do it. He charged like 45 bucks to people for a monthly term service contract if I recall.

I picked up a generator last year, I might start another one someday, it was fun.
heres a god question, how much did all that cost you? lmao its sounds like the only thing you cold afford to own was the fish tank :D but this is comeing from a guy that isnt particularly into fishys and all that..at least not when they are in a tank.

Naw, overall cost? hmm well...I bought most of my stock mail-order or off the net. You buy all your live rock to start and begin cycling your tank. It's sent air freight and you go to your local airport to pickup the cardboard boxes. Live rock varies on price from 1.99 a pound and up. Stick with the cheap fiji rock, just make sure it's encrusted with coraline alge. Let's say you had a 50 gallon aquarium. Start with 50-75 lbs of rock.

Your main costs come from your initial investment in equipment. Lights: buy proper spectrum metal halides. You can get 2 fixtures, ballasts and bulbs for a couple hundred bucks off the net as kits. That'd be enough for say a 50 gal tank. Filtration: I built my own wet-dry filter to start by modifying a 10 dollar 10 gallon aquarium. You'll need 3-4 power heads for circulation, prob a 300 watt heater, chemicals, salt and test kits. And of course a good protein skimmer. And also as I said I used a drip feed system to replentish water and introduce chemicals (to keep a high calcium level),

After the tank is cycled (6-8 weeks), your ready buy some corals. Same as before you order it all off the net....It's sent to the airport and ya pick it up.
Several companie over the years have had a 9 for 99$ deal. Start with that kind of thing... And get turbo grazer snails to clean your tanks glass or acrylic.

So as a start, figure 200 for lights ( for a small setup), if you build your own filtration system, it's negligable in cost, if ya buy a wet-dry, it's prob 200$. Protein skimmer 100-200$ heater and powerheads 100$, salt-chemicals-test kits 150-200$ a drip feed tank and hose-25$.

You can spend alot more if you go with digital test equipment, but you really don't need it all. And yes, you can spend 80$ on a piece of coral too pretty easily, but there is really no need. If you start with small pieces of soft corals they will grow like crazy. It's just a matter of cutting them with a razor blade and using either super glue or a rubberband to attach your cutting to a rock and it will start a new colony.

I ended up doing that and for 5 years did not pay for much supplies at all. I'd bring my cuttings to my local aquarium store and we'd trade my cuttings for his retail chemicals and salt/etc.

Aquariums are all about the nitrogen cycle. Once ya understand that, it's all becomes cheesecake.

My costs were my initial investment. Much of it I had from having freshwater for years beforehand. If you just go for a simple sal****er setup for fish, it's much easier amd tons cheaper. Keeping sal****er crystal clear is SO much easier than freshwater. With freshwater your always adding food to the water. I had a max of 5 fish in my reef tank at any one time, I never fed any of them ever. Some of them lived happily for 4-5 years.

Monthly maintaince wa basically the cost of replacing 15-20% of the water in my 135 gal tank. And the cost of the chemical used to maintain the disolved calcium level in the water (only needed for reef tanks) and of course my electric bill. lol

I've had many hobbies cost me much more over the years. And sal****er tanks with just fish and marine reef tanks were so simple to maintain. I used to joke to myself that the small worlds I had created in glass had more in them than any mmorpg world I had played in. it is amazing to look at a reef tank, watch it develop and grow. The amount of life that survived on the live rock from the ocean to my tank was astounding, the amount of microscopic and almost microscopic life is amazing. To watch a self enclosed ecosystem grow and actually do better and better was a great experience. In a way I had to become a gardner, you need to keep a certain distance between most types of coral or they can become agressive towards each other. War! lol. Which can be bad news....( dead corals).

In any case it was a fun hobby, I'd recommend it to mmorpg devs. See if you can keep something alive! LOL

currently looking to do some suspentions

What's this?

No, just drop one of these (http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/affacts/big-bomb.mpa) on anyone you don't like.

WTF? What's an MPA file? Either way, it's not displaying anything on my work computer (Mac)...stupid Mac...

MPA = MPEG Audio Stream, Layer I, II or III

Try using WMP instead of Quicktime.

And wth Luke, looks like they dropped a coffin filled with explosives.
The massive ordiance air blast is the largest conventional bomb in existence. It is more like the size of a car filled with explosives. God bless the United States Air Force
Yeah, MOAB. It's been said to be the second biggest bomb the US has, next to a nuke...

Dunno, from all the footage I've seen...it still looks itty-bitty compared to a nuke, though. :P

Yeah, MOAB.

Largest conventional bomb in the world. Big brother to the old (Vietnam era) Daisy Cutters.

Of course, but it still has a blast radius 10x that of most conventional weapons. And dropping the "mother of all bombs" doesnt quite have the political ramifications of dropping a nuke. Hehe, only the Air Force could consider dropping this bomb instead of that bomb because it's more politically correct. God bless this beautiful country.

I watched the video and... ahh I was literally in pain watching it >_< I couldn't watch it all the way through. But I have to say they look cool as hell, untill you're like.. hanging in your skin from a helicopter >_<

...I just want a tattoo...
Surprisingly....I figured there were more people that did this....but there isnt...I...am a skateboarder...surprisingly I already have a tattoo of a dreamcatcher around my left arm...at least not many people have that one...ty originality... I've been wanting that one since I was 13...

Hanging out with my fiancee.(The greatest hobbie in the world)

I like partying....no drugs involved only alcohol tyvm.

btw suspensions are crazy...I saw it on mind freak a couple days ago...he was vertically suspended by 4 hooks in his back....while being lifted...get this...BY A HELICOPTER...over a freakin canyon...that was insane.

Other than that I play battlefield 2 on xbox live every night with my rl friends...all 12 of em...(Too bad they're the same ones I skate with as well)*sniffle* :(

That was the video I posted. Chriss Angel is insane, I agree. Though that is one of the more extreme degrees of suspension.
Yup vertical is supposed to be the toughest one
Lol I didn't realize you posted a link to it
I can't watch it again...my back hurt all night from watching it the first time....
yea im realy exited about trying it, can just imagen what the adrenaline rush is going to be :)
I don't want to even think about it >_<
Whoa, that sounds less like a hobby and more like an issue! <shudder> Seriously, I don't even want to think about it. x_x

Uh... just remember, you have your body for life. You might be doing things to it that in 10 or 20 years you might regret.

don't believe me?

think about your life 10 or 20 years ago. Now, how "different" are your likes, wants, desires, fears, frustrations from your "contemporary self"?

Not really trying to preach. I very much believe that all people should follow what is real for them (as long as it hurts NO ONE else).

But it is important to put your life (and body, health, state of mind, etc) in perspective.

Not that your "now" self is in a complete vacuum from your "then" self or your "future" self. But as I look back on my life I can see the "thread" that is me (all the way back to when I was 2. I actually remember the lunar landing and not getting why it was a big deal as mother always watched flash gordon and it seemed he could already do that type of stuff :D ) and am very acutely aware of how my outlook has changed.

Things that used to bother me now don't. Things that I wanted now seem to be just examples from which I grew from.

Just be careful and really put everything in context of the whole "Eriot". :)

I did, sorry, I was distracted. >.>
I think that sometimes when we are young we forget the body ages eventually and things we did to it in our youth come back to haunt us in not very pleasant ways. ;)'

I'm all for body modification if it's done for the right reasons. Sometimes it's done out of self loathing and that's definately the wrong one.

Pain can be a very transformative experience and I know that is often what people seek.
I agree. I've had some crazy ideas regarding body modification in the past. Glad I didn't follow through!
But for many years I've wanted a tattoo - I just need a good motive. I think when I haven't changed my mind about that in around 10 years, I probably won't for another 10, as long as I pick a tasteful motive.
Piercings are great ^^ If you don't want them anymore, you can just take them out and *poof* they're gone. -Happened to one of mine -by accident, because I lost the jewel like a total spazmo :(
Tattoos are addictive. Some advice I can give on them is know what you want before you go in. If you design your own tatt it will never get old because it will have special meaning to you. If you need help find a good artist in your area and bring your idea to him/her and let them work on it for a while. Be careful when getting a tatt as well. Reputation is big in the industry so choose wisely. There are many good shops out there.....just pick up a tattoo mag to find one in your area or ask around. You will find people will give the skinny on shops and artists because just about everyone who has a tatt is proud of it.

Dont ever go in after drinking. Most shops wont even deal with you if you are drunk, plus you bleed more and make bad decisions.

Tatts become part of you. I dont even really notice mine anymore because they are a part of me. If I were to wake up on morning and they were gone it would be as if a part of me was gone. Also dont just choose random pieces of art to put on your body. Tatts can be like clothing.....if they dont match you just look stupid. I personally have a water theme going because I am a big scuba guy.

If you havent thought about what you want do so. Draw it or have someone draw it for you. Think about it some more before you put it on your body. Decide where it should go and then think about it some more. I have waited up to 2 years to get the right design. Now I have 7 tatts from my feet to my back piece.

As for piercings.....well have to make up your own mind about that. I had a nip ring when I was 18. Poorest decision I ever made. It was cool at the time, but quickly got old. I went through all that pain to take it out a year and half later. So make sure it is something you really want!
Thanks for the advice :)
I have some ideas about what I want, and my boyfriend has agreed to draw me one (he's very good at drawing), so we'll work on it together.
And I know who I want to do the tattoing. I've heard only good things about him :)
I had wanted one for many years before getting it. I had an "idea" of what I wanted and would look, every now and then, to see if anything was close. I finally hit on a design that was what I was looking for and got it the same day. I do want another but am not sure what (I do know where) I want just yet...
Heh, I've wanted one for a while, but I'm not sure if I'd like it when I was old - so I just cut my hair when I feel like a change. >.>
I'm most likely going to get me a couple of tattoos. I know what designs I'd want, and wear I'd want them. All I need now is money <.<
In addition to video games and dnp RPGs, my hobbies and interests include:

Modelling & Clothing Design (goth/industrial, post-post-modern/cyberpunk, etc)
Social/Political activism (sanctioned and non)
Writing (fiction and non)

... and that's pretty much all the time I have for hehe...
Aside from gaming I:

- write short fictions and prose
- compose music
- play guitar
- read books (particularly fantasy/sci-fi/satire)
- do web things (jsp/java/php/flash/sql/etc)
- get lost on purpose
- try not to get eaten by my kitten

- get lost on purpose

That's cool. I wouldn't dare (because once I'm lost I rarely actually find my way back), but if I had more of a sense of direction, I'd totally want to try this just to find cool spots.

I've found all kinds of neat things I wouldn't have otherwise seen by doing this. It's a nice way to break routine and get a fresh perspective on the world.
When I was a kid I collected matchboxes :)
