I got home today and checked my messages only to find the sadest PM i've seen in a long time. The contents of the PM was edited by me.

Subject: Get 5% off your adena purchase.

From: [923]

Go to www dot [923] dot com and use the promo code: l2special to get 5% off. Offer ends: 09/16/06

So this is the new low, huh. Where will it all end?
Report it to a moderator and I'm sure they will take care of it.
though i understand your reaction, I'm not shocked.

I hadn't played 4 weeks and some well meaning person in-game gave me a www. address to buy adena.

At that point it never occured to me it was not done and I had no moral outrage so I checked it out to find out that adena was EXPENSIVE in real life.
My first thought was "why the heck would you pay for what you can get free"? I got drafted by a pretty good clan soon after and their rule (thankfully) was "no buying adena outside of game" so that was the end of my curiousity.

Btw, that person and I had leveled together for almost 2 weeks part-time. At lvl 25 I was in bronze NG with a gladius and that player "magically" produced full-brig set with helmet and +7 glaive to wear on his toon!!!!!!
Never saw him again but assume he's still playing--prob in A-grade at lvl 65 or something.
One day I did some calculations. Hrm 1 hour working versus 1 hour farming and came to some sad conclusions. It also made me wonder if I was smart or stupid to grind out the countless hours grinding/farming/searching for deals and playing the market. While the sense of accomplishment is great at having amassed a fortune ingame, I wonder what I could have done with that time.

For teenagers here's something to ponder. Cut grass for 1 hour or go play the market for 1 hour. Cutting grass is sure bet but the market is hit or miss.

To date I have earned most of my adena playing the market and the rest through xping, crafting, and making shots. LOTS of shots!!! Lots of hours were spent clicking to make shots. In 4-5 hours I can make 2-3 mil. That's less than $3. While we're not supposed to do conversion with game money the calculations did make me take a step back.
It is definaly cheaper to purchase, but I feel that the sense of accomplishment far outweighs the instant gratification that only lasts momentarily.
The problem with selling that logic is that most things in life we don't do ourselves, we purchase them made or done. We don't make all our food ourselves, we don't grow all of it ourselves, we don't build our own cars or appliances, etc.

Does a computer count as an appliance? Cause I built mine. ;)
I got one of those too! but it was an email. for sum website. yopu know its really lame when people just cant play the game the way its meant to be played...

True, but there is a certain sense of accomplishment when you do things for yourself, especially the first time. Even growing and cooking your own food can be fun if it's something new, and to me building something is always fun.

It's my belief that when a game begins to parallel real life too much, it's time to move on to something that is actually enjoyable for you.

I suppose the problem is that people have different definitions of fun. Some people abhor the grind but still enjoy the end game content, and others may enjoy the grind but hate playing the market. Unless every single player enjoys the exact same aspects of a game, you're always going to see people taking shortcuts like this where people seek fun at the expense of others.

Does a computer count as an appliance? Cause I built mine. ;)

Did you really? I am pretty sure some companies like Asus, Corsair, Intel, AMD or other companies built the components. ;)

True, but there is a certain sense of accomplishment when you do things for yourself

Sometimes, but this highly varies from person to person as to what they get enjoyment out of accomplishing. Like some people love tending gardens, then there are people like me that abhor garden work and would gladly pay someone to take care of it.´

But we're mostly in agreement.
Greetings,

Yes, I agree with you, but it goes against game morals if you let RL interfear with it. You can't let out of game elements poison the game.

Like if I used RL money to buy more monopoly money in a monopoly game...

Getting Spam about RL issues in game.
I got offered 10% off :P

This kind of makes me sad ... PMs on OFFICIAL site offering adena buys, that are discouraged by NC itself? come ooooon ... this world lacks morale more and more :(

You may have ASSEMBLED your computer but I seriously doubt if you built. Given the parts a 10 year old can assemble one.

I agree with what you say here. I had fun making my first billion. The 2nd was a grind. Then I pretty much vaporized the whole thing... WTS crystals and shots!!! Then I almost made my 3rd bil but decided I was going to quit so I pretty much vaporized that set too.

Poor again but certainly much happier. Not grinding as much or playing the market like before.

I agree with you wholeheartedly.

If something like that happened, pretty much everyone at the board would simply give up and walk away. Possibly before or after a savage beating.

The problem is that a good monopoly game has about eight people, while a good MMO has ten thousand. Most of the cheating that goes on is invisible, and really in a game world that large it's possible that you won't even be directly impacted by it. Some people do 'get up and leave' because of MMO cheating as well, but it's just a different world than a small game among friends.

Really all you can do is hold to your own moral standards and hope that the people you trust do the same. At least in that way you make the tiniest bit of progress towards a better gaming environment.

I used to steal a couple hundred from the bank at the very begining and hide it and use when needed.

Unfortnuatly people caught on fast :(

Oh, I don't know. Maybe because he made a thread about it. I would've assumed that, if it had been handled "behind the scenes", there'd be no reason to bring it to the forums asking about it.

For example, someone once PMed me. Nothing more (and without the *'s). I "handled it behind the scenes" and didnt' need to start a thread asking if it was okay to do. Common sense took over for me, I guess.
I informed Mistryl first and made the topic afterwards.

The point of the thread was more of a discussion, that i was shocked how this topic has now invaded my PM's.

I mean how more bold can they become?
Maybe just too much adena to unload.
Downtime means Streetfighteronline and/or Hero Online to me. Also gives the people in our TS to argue about when NcSoft will dump L2 NA....pre L3 or post L3.

Like you can see I dont often post here, because I use most of my time to play the game ;). On the other hand I'm pretty dissapointed about the way the moderators here work (wouldn't be surprised if this post will be deleted again - lol), because I never ever used any bad words, but I say what I think. When there is any criticism about NC-Soft/Play-NC the posts will be deleted! Well - how constructive can be a forum like this?

OK - we all know it : Adena is buyable at Ebay or on "game-currency-websites" - and that the "adena-seller" doing some ads (even now in game) - mh is just logical - isn't it?

A matter of records: Go anywhere into the land of Aden and count the player you know or which are obviously no bots. Now count the accounts used for bots!

I can't tell you exact numbers here, but I guess there are 40% to 50% of the acounts on a server used with a third party program. I guess another 30-40% of all acounts on a server have bought adena here or there with a true currency.

I love this game - its a good game, but all these "ebayers" and "bots" make it an unfair competition.

I think I'm lost here because - lol - 80-90% (guessed) of all accounts will tell me that's BS and on the other hand, if my rough calculation is nearly the truth, why should the "Grand Master of this Game" kick out 50% of his income?
Ebay happens and there is nothing anyone can do about it. What we need to be doing is visiting the topic "nerf root for Tanks" in C5 discussion. Kthanks

meh, takes no work to play the market, in fact I did it with afk shops most of the time I wasn't playing. However when my Videocard did blow up from doing that for 6months...I had to think if it was worth it ...

It got replaced+++warranty, hell yeah it was worth it :)

agreed. nerf trance too. 75 sorc down to EE with soul bow cause of trance + mana burn hax. that's some bs.
Im not surprised at all. An interesting anecdote on this topic, while playing in a Korean server for a similar game to L2 there was a farmer in the main town of the game (the equivalent to our giran) spamming to sell currency giving a website address and phone number you could call in korea. This was allowed to go on every day that I played there.
The first time I crafted an item in-game, it was fun... well, no, the success was fun. The days and days, which stretched into weeks and weeks, of farming, buying mats on the market, farming more, selling stuff I already had to pay for more parts and mats... that was definitely not-fun.

... and this for a C-grade item.

I moved into the B-grade stuff, and did the same thing over again, several times. Again, having the finished product was nice, but certainly that feeling was over-shadowed by the knowledge that I'd just spent a month of my in-game life doing nothing but farming mats for these items.

Then I tried a few more things, with sub-100% recipes, and suceeded only once. Definitely did not appreciate the efforts of my farming and market-playing going all for naught with the click of a mouse.

Anyway, here I was with a full set of B-grade (finally), having spent months working on it. Next to me is another Swordsinger of my acquaintance, who I knew full well to be less than 3 months old (as a character) who was already my level and had ebayed her gear every step of the way. She was, in every way, my clone (a level difference, but the same songs)... though being who she was, she was more often in parties than I was at the time.

So I am left wondering who, really, had more fun at the game at the end of all that?
