Of course this question has probably been asked and answered more times than all the people that have walked this planet. Anyways, yesterday I’m in the orc village hunting turek orcs trying to lvl my human warrior. my wife as always was not too amused of my gaming habit but since i got home early yesterday from work i decided to get in some L2 time (luckily i was able to get my toon to lvl30). Well her and me were having our evening coffee/tea while i was playing and she was sitting next to me watching/talking etc.
After viewing for couple of minutes, she asked, "how come I don’t see other people around if you say that so many people play this game at the same time, and why aren’t you in a party right now?"
While I was explaining this to her, she saw three toons run in front of my character. All three were male characters but unfortunately their chosen in-game names were too vulgar to mention here (lets just say they were descriptive of anatomical parts of the opposite gender, and the third name was a synonym of '******'). Not only that, with their weapons and armor, it looked like they were in D and C Grade.
To make the long story short, my wife saw this and then got a little upset that why do I play this type of a game and who are these people, why do they have names like these, etc. etc. My question is, what goes on in people's heads when they name their characters this?!?. I mean you can’t possibly think that others will take you seriously when you have names like this!!! And wth people, I’m just a little annoyed with the mind level of certain players, if I was alone and I came across this I wouldn’t have cared less, but sitting next to your spouse and then trying to explain about something that you devote so much time into, freakin ridiculous!!!

best thing to do let them they are the ones running around with their name showed to the world how rediculus they are =D
Anyone with a certain since of humor will find that funny. If you don't like it, work for change or comprimise.
personally it doesnt bother me, people do what they gotta do. its when i've to explain certain silly things to others, thats what i dont comprehend. but, whatever cant change everything =)
If it is upsetting to you just report it to a GM. I am aware of similar things happening on my server and I know that those same people were basically banned if it was their character name and given a short ban and requested to change their title if it was that.
There are few and far between that I have personally seen that would bother me. I know my b/f has only ever come across one that he reported and the nature of the name was a fair enough report as it was just vulgar and not a suitable name for anyone to have to see let alone kids.
I'm not bothered by most things but there are limits I know :)
No, when we grow up we are supposed to be able to differenciate (I butchered that word) fantasy and reality, and be able to understand various ideas from many different points of view.
Unfortunaly, we do play in a game where everyone's age can range from 1-100! With this you will find some people who you can tell act there age or chose not too. Those who make names that are inappropriate are craving attention from you & others who are bothered by it. Your three choices are to,
1.) Report those names to a GM. (they will change name)
2.) Ignore them & keep on playing.
3.) Quit & never play again.
I do not suggest 3 because it would be ashame to lose a good new player. Good luck & just think maybe you will come across those guys with those names again when your a higher level & feel like earning some pvp points ;)
I usally dont bother to report any names as they dont really bother me...
But some ppl cross all lines; the only name i reported was a dwarf name "IRapeChildren" that man need a hammer crush on his head in rl.

I'm sure there's precious little going on in their brains when they came up with their names. They do it because they think it's amusing, they do it for attention, they do it because they have no imagination. Mostly I pity them. I never party or buff them.

I hear you. I believe that they go unnoticed by GMs unless someone complains. Same with people cursing in chat channels or with offensive clan titles. If it bothers you, report them. They'll get to choose a new name plus they'll get the attention they so desperately crave. I've only once reported someone for cussing. They tried a name scam on me and, after I strung him along for a bit, told him to buzz off. He PMed me an f-bomb so I reported him. :p
Look at my name as just "judas" which i typically use if it's not already taken.

Course using obviously well know body parts or other slang/swears of any sort will gaurantee a name change coming soon, some people really get upset reguarding just about any name you can conceive of if they wanted to nit pick.
I actually ignore it, the name doesn't apply to me, i can in game either kill a person for it if i really wanted to drag RL dilemas into it, but frankly, it's not my toon, it's similare to the real world, and if a word is going to upset you, i'll guarantee you that reguardless of the filters used, your going to have a hard time evading anything and everything.

lol, I named my archer xMonroex & apparently on my server that name is famous for someone who must of not been at good terms with some players on the server. I had no idea , because I've never heard of any reputation of this guy. Well I got a pm & I told him I have no idea who Monroe is & I just picked the name cuz I thought of Marilyn Monroe
(my archer has blonde hair) Well I guess it was a bad choice, but no one has done anything about it, so oh well. :p
I'd report it to a GM, if it's really bad they'll have to change it if it's a clan title and if it's a character name I've heard of GM's renaming it for them.
Very little bothers me though, maybe someone needs thicker skin. It's just words.

Typicly the GM's wont change anything unless it''s reported by more then a few people...I'm sure there are somethings that mite go over that they will. L2 is has a game rated of "teen" so knowingly nameing your toon something vulgure will lend a name change and or a temp band/band.
I've once made a toon named "Iebayalot", with in L2 that mite not go over well. but it may not meen that I ebayalot of adena... the name was made as a joke that some former clanies thought up.(I was shocked that the name wasn't taken)
I've once saw a name that I found to be very offencive do to the nature of it having "tallaban" in it. I was going to report them for such a name, But i just shuged it off and let it go.
some may not of found that to be offencive to them, but for me being former military and fighting in iraq, and the issues in sociaty over the last few years that was offencive to me, and I'm not offended too very often by the imaturity of people.
Pvrjudas: I think people (mostly christians) take your name to be bad. I'm not going to say more on this, but we can take it to "off topic".

So report them. Or not.
L2 has a lot of definitions. Invariably I've run across good folks--decent, fun, mature, playing.
Sure there are a few jerks.
The answer to your wife's question is that the few jerks in L2 don't define it anymore than the few jerks in all facets of society do............
A bunch of folks get together to: (fill in the blank....discuss politics, advocate for peace, make a difference in their community, form a business..whatever)...........and eventually a jerk shows up.
That is NOT L2. Just a consequence of an open architecture.
This is gonna sound strange--but sometimes, every once in awhile, I almost feel like I'm a better person playing a cartoon character in a video game, than I actually am.
L2 isn't the problem (or the answer/solution)--it's a game.
For a few of us, it's a way to PLAY--which may be denied in RL.
Just like in RL, jerks happen. That doesn't define RL either.
If anyone (your wife, for instance) is going to point out 3 jerks then make her watch the interaction in-game between the 20 people who help you, the funny chat conversations you participate in, the accomplishment that comes with meeting a goal as a clan.........those are part of L2 and bigger than a couple of immature folks.
Drakkos: i agree with you, very well said. that is exactly how i explained to her, luckily she was able to chat with a few of my clanmates, and it was all cool.

HAve you ever seen a character running around with the name "NameChange2569"? It's because they used something similar to what the OP saw and were reported. They will get to pick 3 names to be changed to and eventually thier name will be changed.
I also read about someone who had three toons with inapropriate names on 1 account and the GM's considered each toon a warning on the 3rd toon he was banned. Funny thing is all three toons had been played for over a year. Someone reported 1 toon, then when he logged on the other they warned him again and then he logged on the third toon and he was permanently banned.
