Why, oh Shilen, why ?

I'm working on my Lineage II Desktop Theme, and right now i'm listening to all the Music (http://www.lineage2.com/pds/pds_music.html) from the game (to include parts of it in the desktop theme), and i couldnt help thinking how excellent this music is !!!
As i cant help thinking how excellent this game is in general, i've played about 10 or 12 MMORPGs and this one is the greatest of them all, no doubt about it, but why, oh why, do people see it only as a PvP video game and not as a real MMORPG ????
The interface is so classy, the graphics are so great, the world of Aden is so big and diversified (cant wait to go to this frozen area in C5), even the map of Aden is beautiful (i have it on print hanging on one of my walls !), the history of Aden is so well-written and well-developped, the music is so excellent, the NPCs always have cool things to say when you go and visit them, etc, etc, etc, Lineage II could so easily beat the sh*t out of WoW, if only it was seen as a real MMORPG once in a while...
Oh well, anyway, back to the Desktop Theme now :p
The vast majority of MMO players does not care for the fantasy RPG part beyond wanting girls in chainmail bikinis with pointy sticks over wanting girls in skintight suits with guns.

And with a game like Lineage 2, which, while certainly excellent for RP (I dig the lore), is primarily simply not designed for roleplayers (there would probably be no karma and/or higher rates for RPers), I don't see how it would help beat a game that's suitable for casual players to the casual player's attention.
Yes, i see your point, but i cant help thinking how it's a waste that such a great game is so much underestimated and under-played (that is, played only as a PvP video game when it has so much more to offer )
Well, that was just my morning thoughts anyway :p
To each their own, I say.

I enjoy RP, and I am more than willing to share it with others in this wonderfully rich game. However, at this point in time forcing RP on someone that does not enjoy it would be like them forcing you to give up RP.

All I can suggest is that you play your game your way (since there are so many ways to play), and hope that someone else finds it appealing.

I speak from experience. I watched several of the diehard Anti-RPers on my server change and actually start RPing. It can be done. Just be patient.

Just be patient.

:D
That's definitively the key word in Lineage II !
And on a side note, it's of course not my intention to force anyone to RP (and by the way, when i play i just do what can be called "casual RP"), i was just kinda thinking aloud about the richness of the game :p
Oh, I completely understand.

Total immersion is something I look for when I'm playing. I often find myself having to stop and take a step back, shake my head and get Olorae out for a few minutes so I can talk to my other half, or answer a phone call, or what have you.

Some people play chess. I immerse myself in a VERY detailed world.
I dont think it wil ever be possible to get a real rpg out of a game that has any form of pvp.
Not anymore, in this age anyhow.

I think even if you would proclaim a game and commerce it as a pure rpg, you would still get counter strike mentality into the game if it had any form on pvp.

However, im going to hook you up with a great link, I think wil intrest you.

I beg to differ, on principal.

This is a role-playing game to me and several hundred others that I could name with just minimal thought.

At the same time, it is a full and open PVP. I've engaged in it. In-character and out-of-character (By the way, if that certan 65 TK is reading this: I'm sorry you're embarrassed that you lost to a 61 SE. I really am. You don't have to reroll. I'm sorry).

My motto is that PVP happens. There are ways to explain "death" in role-playing (I'll try to find the guide and link it in). There are ways to pull everything into your RP, even the bots.

*gasp* I said the B-word! Please don't lock me away! I'll be good, I promise!

Now, something I've noticed: There has been a lot more interest in the RP aspect of this game lately. I don't think it's a difference in advertising so much as a new mindset coming to the game, and old mindsets changing to adapt to try new things.

I'm hoping it's a trend that will build.
Oh no, im fairly certain that you can rp your way to hero if you wanted to.
Im just stating that the majority of players in any game that provides pvp wil not follow your way of thinking. At least not with the mindset we have by gamers today. The trend right now is to be leet and owning people, usually followd by typeing something that is replacing numbers with letters.
I’ve only been playing since the end of C3 beginning of C4. The only reason I heard of this game was because of an advertisement on the back of Dragon magazine, which is the official dungeons and dragons magazine. That may help explain jkosters statement.

That led me to believe it had a large RP element to it, which I have yet to find other than the quest.
PvP is an essential boost for roleplaying - it's the best of all social emotes, and being unable to do it is a little like not having emotes available. It's certainly possible and feasible, but it removes an imoprtant and cool element.

The thing that discourages roleplayers is, I think, not the PvP but the grind - I simply do not now, or will ever, have an in character explanation, as to why my characters are running around in little circles in NoS/FT/Cruma/wherever killing the same things over and over again.

The thing is that non-roleplaying gamers really don't disturb roleplayers much (they're very handy as NPCs, or as an exciting factor that can not be calculated - think random encounter!) once you've got a hang of it, indeed adding more spice and maybe a mild annoyance if they appear.

What does disturb roleplaying is a lack of other roleplayers with a similar mindset and style - I get frustrated roleplaying with some kind of roleplayers, just as others no doubt get frustrated with me.

Having a stronger community of roleplayers would be pretty darn nifty, but it's unrealistic - turn back to the grind. Even roleplayers want A Grade, at some point. :D

Yeah, and I honestly never thought I'd be there, but I am... Wow.

Talking about a comunity, I_Faithkill, have you been by the site?

www.l2rpa.org (http://www.l2rpa.org)

Swing on by and say hi! If you're not on Lionna, I bet we could introduce you to someone on your server that RPs.
Thanks for site link, like you I just reached A grade and I’m reluctant to rerole on a new server. My main server is Gustin although I do have a lvl 21 cleric on Eric that at some point I will make a bishop.
Hmm. I think I know some RPers on both servers.

I'll try to hook you up.
Know anyone on Erica? :P
Yep.

Just have to get in touch with them.

In the mean time, come visit us (http://www.l2rpa.org)! The more players we pull in from the other servers, the more chances there are to meet other players on those servers!

Exactly !
People often think of RolePlayers as "carebears", but these are two completely different concepts !
A regular player can be a carebear while a RPer can decide to kill everyone on sight, and vice versa, those two things have nothing to do with one another !
And yes, a real RPer should like the open PvP (i know i do), as it's a lot more "realistic", i mean, come on, what could be the RP justification of not being able to attack another player just because ... well, it's another player ?

Yes, but have you noticed how things seem to subtly change ? In the new C5 movie (the one presenting the new hunting grounds), Tim Tan always try to come up with a good RP reason for killing the mobs ! Like when he talks about the new race of Orcs, we're supposed to take them down because they're growing in power and trying to release demonic forces or something :p
When i heard that, i thought "man, this game is heading in the right direction now !" :D
One thing I have always found amusing is how the "hardcore" PvP enthusiasts have always railed against RPers for making "a carebear game", yet the RPers have never railed against the PvPers for making it a PvP game...
thats because to be a true RP there would have to Pvp in town also. there is always a chance of getting back stabbed no matter where you go, even a temple.

I would love this... I would so love this...

I know a certain paladin that just REALLY needs a knife to the back while he's in prayer.

see, thats my point. pvp is a natural part of rp. thats why rp'ers don't complain.
Shush guys, you're ruining prejudices that took years to build! :o

I'd love PvP in town for RP reasons - but just practically, it would be horrible for me (I go AFK a whole lot) with the way guards are now. :D
