Well, moderators could just enforce it. Sure there might be some people who think it's funny to keep making their sigs really big, but most of the crowd here seems pretty mature :)

They don't enforce the avatar size restrictions. What makes you think they'd worry about signature sizes? No, not needed and are annoying.
Some signatures are very well made, look nice and all that. But when you read a thread where two or three people respond to each other's posts, you see the same old signatures after each and every post and it gets very annoying if you have to find little bits of texts in between all the graphics. And you have to scroll more. And of course you have to LOAD all the signature pictures - some actually use animated .gif pictures with 2mb+ size...
In my opinion, messageboards should be only about that - messages. Text. Not pictures. Every poster here can choose an avatar picture. That should be enough, you can always put some TEXT into your signature. No need to put a picture there.
The old rule: Up to four lines of text, max. 75 characters each. That should be enough. It's just up to 1800 bytes (with UTF-8) in size and enough for something like 50 words in English. I don't think there's any need for more.
It's not possible to put three or four links in your signature (I tried linking up interesting threads, wouldn't work even with manually shortening the forum URLs down).
As for those worryign about loading? Go to your control panel and switch it off... just as GoDEyeS said, the feature exists for a reason.

I swear to god that if they ever implement this I'm going to use this image (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y40/jfencl/Avatars/image14rx.gif) spread out like 10 times across the screen. And, I'll rename it and relink it every freakin' morning for those that adblock it. I hate this idea with a passion.
Maybe I'm just spartan like that but I like this board because you can't change fonts, and can't add a signature., etc LOVE IT.
Another board I use to visit recently added customization and I dont' even go to it any more because of all the people using tiny, pink cursive letters, happy baby avatars and other sparkly things. Drives me nuts.
And blah omg, it's almost funny to watch a thread load all the text, then resize itself to 10 extra pages because of all the huge signatures. I block as many as I can.

That's what people want when they have nothing to say. You'll see tons of one word posts of "pwned" or "lawl" and a freakin' huge signature image. Nice (not).
You should have seen the dirty look she was giving him. It would make any grown man run for the hills. :)
I once had Miykael reply on a thread and said something like, "Elro, do I even need to say it?" in response to an avatar of mine. That was a good day (got tons of hate mail and posts about it as well). I still even remember which avatar that was. :p
