This is still my first few days, so bare with me. Ive had WoW drilled into my head for the last 2 years, so need a few questions answered.
The differance between races seems to make a fair ammount of impact on your early game, is it the same end game. Example; Dark Elf archer seems to hit harder and kill faster than my human archer.
How can you compair classes? Humans seem to shoot faster, but also are a lot weaker. Is that about right? What about Hawkeye Vs phantom ranger? What and why should i pick one over another? Would i be gimped it i picked one over another.
I love to pvp, and to be honest ATM am getting owned by casters. I rolled a caster and noticed they do amazing burst damage with spells, in a lot of cases one hit mobs and players.
One thing i hate about casters in L2 is when you get hit, you can stop casting all together, and still have a cooldown. Does this change?
I also love to solo, and love to deal insane damage. I want to be great in pvp, and have a pretty **** good chance of serviving. I was aiming for BD, but it seems there are a lot end game, and also get chewed up pretty quickly.
Swords High Fantic! Welcome to Lineage II and the officila forum community. What server do you play on?
As for some of your questions, yes race does impact your gameplay throughout the life of the game. As you can see if you go through the class skills, each class has its own set of skills.
Archers: Light elves and dark elves will have a few in common, but some unique and humans tend to be a "tweener" mixing the two.
Spellcasters may be interrupted throughout their game cycle. I'm an A grade sorceror and was interrupted about 6 times last night by dark blue mobs (very low to me).
The type of playstyle you described does not really fit with the BD. The BladeDancer is a support character, who uses his dances to give special attributes to his party. This allows for the party overall to output damage at an increased level. A BD on its own is neither sturdy (as a tank) or powerful (as an archer/nuker).
You'll get additional responses and some that may disagree with mine somewhat which is cool. L2 provides an opportunity for unique perspectives, playstyles and gaming experiences even for people who play the same toon.
It's noteworthy to mention that spell interruption rates are based on an attribute (MEN) that most casters sacrifice in order to incrase their casting speed and damage output. However, I'll assume Quay also had high levels of Concentration (a buff that helps you not get interrupted). I'm not sure in how far they balance each other out.
I'll agree that the class you describe does not sound like a BD - their damage is certainly nothing to dismiss, but it's not top of the line either.
It sounds a bit like a destroyer or tyrant (an orc fighter), but Charmille has a much more informed opinion about that.
Best PvP class last chronicle was the nuker. Pick any and you would own all non nukers. However, life has become more difficult for nukers. THey still basicly kill anything they aim at, but their ability to survive an atacker who has come close has been dimished.
Archers are a very good PvP class. Their arrows hurt a lot and they can kite their opponents. However, there are nao some classes that have skills to slow the archer down and get close and personal with them.
The new uber class is the dagger. They get skills that will demolish an opponent in 2 hits. No matter his armor, hit points, level or class. If the skill connects, the other one is dead. Problem of course is in getting close and high level to get those awsome skills. WEarning though, classes that are the flavour of the chronicle tend to be nerfed in hte next chronicle.
Melee classes. The Gladiator and the Orc melees can do a big amount of damage. Not as good as the dagger and they still have to come close. Expect to die a lot before reaching your opponent.
Lstly the BD. This is a support class that does ok damage. But nothing compared to the glad, orcs or the dagger! If you want to be big in PvP, do not choose BD.
I love the orcs duel wield abilty, it to me would be perfect as a class. I was just told that solo wise past 40, they wernt as good as maybe a caster or archer.
I like the casters, its just having to run away from a mob (that will chase forever) because your spell got interupted. Archers seem to have the same problem, just not as much.
If i was to go tyrant, what advantage would i have over BD? more health? faster attacks? higher attack damage?
im sorry if i seem a total nub, ut this is all very new to me. I dont want to make a class that will die in 2 hits pvp, and 3 hits pve, end game. how are orcs duel wield end game? I hear they hit INSANE fast, and tear up anyone who is unfortunate enough to get in range.
Nukers/archers are the range classes.. shot 1-2 from far & kill. If a melee class does get up to you (or roots ya) then your dead in 2 hits.
Melee.. usually owned by the range classes...because of C5 they have currently become a bit more balance. (Some melee classes get root, Nukers/Casters Sleep been nerfed.)
BD= does decent damage & can survive when taking a hit, they are not at the high end of either DD or PVP scale, but they are a great class for grouping, or mass PVP.
(Root = a skill casted on the enemy to hold them in 1 spot for a certain amount of time)
MalineII makes a good point. The way you tweak your toon makes a lot of difference. As assumed, I have tatoos that lower my Men to increase Wit and Int so that I can cast a bit faster and hit a bit harder. (Concentration 6 fyi)
Of course had I not had those tats, certain people would say that my toon wasn't built correctly and any complaints I had about skills being nerfed or arguments that there is a balancing act between the classes would be dismissed because I didn't have the optimal tat setup.
But I digress...
BDs play an important role in the game. However, it doesn't sound as though that is the role you want to play.
I would humbly suggest an archer class to experiment with. Again you have a choice in playstyles: Phantom Rangers who hit hard but slow, Silver Rangers who hit with the least archer damage (plenty hard if you ask me) but are fast, or Hawkeyes that balance between the two.
Sturdier than a mage and can't be interrupted, better damage output than a standard melee.
Of course the dagger class looks like it may be the flavor of the month.
The idea of the nuker is to kill your opponent before he reaches you. Once close, yes, you are in trouble as a Dark elf. But Sorcerers and spellsingers just hit the Aura burn button a few time and the mob is dead (works less good in PvP these days).
So most Spellcasters hunt mobs they can 2 shot. And when a bad thing happens, have the casting speed and the concentration buff high enough not to lose most of their spells being succesfully cast.
EQ's idea of trying an archer is not a bad idea. You have until your 40th level to chose between dagger and archer anyway, so swap around a bit and see which style you prefer.
I like the casters, its just having to run away from a mob (that will chase forever) because your spell got interupted. Archers seem to have the same problem, just not as much.
You don't hunt in L2 like you do in WoW. In Wow, it seems that casters stay put and keep blasting away. It also seems that archers do the same thing though they can't cast point blank (at least in my experience).
In L2 you "kite" the mobs. You cast (or shoot the arrow) run, and when you are ready, cast (shoot again).
Yes, in many instances you can kill your target before it gets to you, but you should kite a bit on the targets that aren't as fragile.

listen to this man, he speaks the truth :) lol
lol... thx. It's funny, I saw a new player in dark elf lands who was frustrated as "all git out" because he kept getting interrupted and almost dying.
He also was a wow player.
Once I explained the kiting thing "suddenly it all made sense".

A lot of people who play WOW, then come play L2, like to try & compare the playing style the game (not there faults we do it too) but it's different. I find exactly what most new L2 players coming from WOW to L2, are doing is posting any problems or looking for suggestions on these boards is probably the best solution towards understanding the game before you get frustrated. I wish I thought of that before I hit level 20 :(

I played L2 years ago, and could never get used to the point and click style combat. I was also just lost at every point in the game. i think the highest i ever got was 6. But after i left WoW i went to play Mu online, wich is point and click, like Diablo. I soon got use to pointing and clicking endlessly :)
Its funny you should say dagger. I went dagger when i hit lvl 12, and missed a LOOOOOOT with my special skill. So when i got to 13 i went back with my bow. I like it, but i still miss quiet a bit. I killed much faster with a dagger, even though i missed a lot, and was able to use a shield, so i might go back till 20.
thanks for all the info though. Its very daunting coming into a new game and knowing nothing about it :)
UGH, can anyone tell me why Mortal Blow doesnt do anything. I use it just like all the other skills, and it never hits. I see the combat log "using mortal blow", then nothing happens. what am i doing wrong?
I love the orcs duel wield abilty, it to me would be perfect as a class. I was just told that solo wise past 40, they wernt as good as maybe a caster or archer.
Orcs do NOT "Dual wield". In Lineage 2 you need to be aware of the language 'technicalities' when it comes to this term.
"Duals" are two one-handed swords that are held one per hand and are fashioned by NPC blacksmiths who take the two one handed swords and a fee to make them into a "Dual Sword".
Duals need two hands to wield, but so do Bows, Polearms, 2 Handed blunts, 2 Handed Swords and Fist weapons. And although these all require two hands to use, their respective skills are different. Thus if you want to wield "Duals" you need specific Dual sword masteries. (Or at least play a "healer" class which recieves generic "Weapon Mastery".)
The classes which get "Dual Sword" skills and masteries are Dark Elf - Bladedancers and Human - Gladiators. (Healers generic weapon masteries work with duals but they have no specific skills for or requiring duals.)
For Orc melees:
Monk/Tyrants/Grand Khavatari are the only class in the game that get skills and masteries specifically for "Fist Weapons".
Raiders/Destroyers/Titans are the only class which recieve a specific "Two Handed Weapon" mastery. This skill applies ONLY to Two Handed Swords or Two Handed Blunts.
As for soloing...pretty much all melee suffers a bit in soloability past 40 unless your willing to either A) Rest very often. Or 2)Spend some adena on Heal potions/shots/buff potions. The C5 addition of "instant potions" has alleviated some of this, but nowhere near all. Both Orc melee classes are decently capable of solo after 40 though.
Well Quay - the +WIT is paramount in PvP, and the +INT is pretty much necessary in PvE (and most would probably say PvP, but I'm not so sure of that as of C5)... ;)
There's also one fact that keeps slipping by some nukers who get interrupted while kiting. Try to stutter as you walk a little, meaning to make a msall stop, and just as you come to a stop, start running again - this will allow the mob to catch up to you and hit you once - while you are already running away. As soon as it starts moving again, turn around and start casting.
Also use your spiritshots to your advantage - loading them before you cast will help you cast faster - moreso with blessed than with normal spiritshots.

Many of the "combat" skills do not have a 100% chance of success. Even the magic 'spells' have a chance of 'failing' and doing 1/2 damage or even just 1pt of damage. Players (or mobs!) with shields can "block" physical attacks and reduce damage, or "resist" magic attacks (Pretty rare actually) and take much less damage.
First mage skills. There are two types of them. Nukes and DoT/Debuffs. Nukes will always hit, but can be resisted occasionally or have the spells 'fail'. The chances of fails and resists are actually fairly low and depend on your class and stats. (DE seldom 'fail' while Orc mystics fail much more often.) DoT/Debuffs however are either hit or miss. Either it lands...or it doesn't. Use of Shots (Blesseds and normal) and Matk affect your success rate, while Armor sets effects, specific resist buffs, or mob weakness/strengths reduce your success rate.
For Melee skills, there are two parts. The instant damage and the debuff effect. Both parts have a % chance to succeed. Not all skills however have both effects. Fatal strike for example only has instant damage, while Shield Stun only has the 'debuff' effect. Both have a very high rate of success however. On the other hand a skill like Hammer crush has a low success rate. It also has the dubious distinction that the 'initial damage' can be resisted just like the debuff (stun) can also.
For dagger skills, in general the 'stabby' type skills have a very, very high damage result, but a fairly low success rate and a high MP cost. It has been awhile since I last used them on my dagger, but in general the success rate of skills like Mortal Blow is probably around the 40% success rate. When they land however YOU KNOW IT! It's a bit like playing russian roulette...that one loaded chamber is a big one!
No, i sware to you. The dagger abilitys dont do anything. If its a bug or whatever. Out of 20 trys, i has 20 misses or just doing nothing. I have tryed with and without a shield, and ether way it does nothing.

Unless I am working on particularly low and non-social mobs, I have my bsps on auto. Don't personally know any mages who don't.
As for the start and stop - let them hit idea. I will be sure to refer to this post often and with great relish to counter those who suggest nukers can simply kill anything and everything before they reach the caster. Considering our low defense, low health and restriction to wearing robes, taking a hit or two from a mob eats away at our health quite a bit. It would also hamper the B2M that some people think is a great attribute for us Sorcs. ;)p
Also the suggestion is only valid if you are in the position to kite one mob at a time. Since sleep is worthless, pulling groups is the most common occurence for spell interruptions.
Edited to add: And ON TOPIC - well sort of - Fantic, with all due respect you are in fact, new to this game. There are many factors that can affect whether or not a skill that has a CHANCE to lane, will - in fact - land.
There are circumstances by which your skill's chance to land is so rediculously infinitesimal that one might erroneously believe the task to be impossible.... much like getting a full drop from a mob.
But to wager an argument whose validity hinges on the idea that your pertsonal experiences must therefore define the entire range of possibility, not to mention how limited your experiences are, is folly.
SirE is right, you are wrong, and if you insist that you know better than the veterans who are trying to steer you correctly to your course, you'll soon find less people willing to help you, and a growning amount of readily accessible evidence of your mistaken theories laying about in your wake.
The tip was directed at the OP in the context of his level. Once he has C Grade, thereby tattoos, and acumen robes, he should not need it anymore. ^_^ The stutter step is relevant if and only if you can not cast fast enough to get one nuke in between the swings you are taking. It beomces more relevant when kiting group mobs (BHs stutter-step when fake deathing - talk about a situation where you shouldn't get interrupted).
There are always healpots. I find them cheaper than the excuse for "extra heals" the life cubic provides. ;(
Oh and the technicality sounds rubbish. Duel Wield means to wield 2, not to wield one 2 hander. You would call that two handed, not duel wield.
If you're going to jump into a game why ask players with years of experience what they think if you're going to call their opinions rubbish? While the orc monks do attack twice they only have one weapon, they cannot equip one in each hand like a WoW rogue. You said "Duel Wield means to wield 2" by your definition 'technically' monks do not dual wield. Pain wasn't giving you a definition of dual wield, he was explaining that in L2 only 2 classes get skills to improve it. If you want to be good at dual wielding you need skills to improve dual wielding, very simple. In these forums if someone posts saying they want to play a dual wielding character the vast majority of people will say BD or glad.
If you want some idea of pvp download a few siege videos. From what I've seen it's mostly nukers/archers just laying waste to everything that gets in range. Unless you play a high hps character you can and will be dropped in a few hits. Awesome damage and high survivability would be disbalancing, you just gotta pick something that you like and accept its downsides.(yes I understand Destroyers can fit into the awesome dmg/high hps category but I consider survivability making it to your opponent and surviving the fight, a lot of melee seem to have trouble getting to their targets)
