Well, after looking over the class trees on this site, I've come down to 3 classes that have caught my eye. Problem is, I'd like to decide asap so I can get my character past 6 and keep him as my main noobie character.
I'm down to these:
Orc Monk: I've seen picks of Orcs wearing those claws and in sweet armor. Seems really badass to me. Plus I like damage.
Dark Elf Phantom Summoner: I like the idea of summoning things, especially evil things.
Human Necromancer: Like the summoner above, this sounds like a delightful "evil" experience. I like the sound of using corpses and summoning up dead things.
Anyhoo, I'm a noob and know little. Help me out here, or at least give me comparisons like "Well, if you like this, then you'd like that."
Necro is currently a very popular and extremely powerful class; they have excellent nukes, they have transfer pain, they have the best summons (when fully buffed) of all, and they have a large array of debuffs.
Phantom Summoner, which I play, is a decent class though there are very few of us; I think I'm one of only two 7x Phantom Summoners active on my server. As I know the class well, here are my opinions
Good parts:
* Very gear independent -- your own armor/weapon is not very important. This helped a lot when I was still poor ;)
* Very high damage for a melee class
* Very strong soloing ability
* Mass Poltergeist Cubic is awesome
* Pretty decent survivability with high levels of transfer pain
* Killing your summon won't make you lose XP (in sieges you can often stay back while your summon is doing its damage, then resummon it when it dies).
Bad parts:
* In a group, you get less XP than the others
* You can't do much to boost your summon. If you notice your summon is often getting debuffed, you can't get better jewelry or tattoos to boost that; it's just something you live with. Not until 76 can you do anything at all to change your summon apart from learning the next level of skills. Your summon's PDEF and MDEF will start out crappy and remain crappy forever.
* There's not a lot of variety in gameplay. During normal combat, you pretty much target, attack, petattack, and then wait. You get heals and cures for your summon, which you can use, but in general there's nothing else to do. Your only real skill you could use would be windshackle.
* We just got nerfed :( In C4 we were extremely strong in 1v1 PvP, we ended up with an overall nerf, 1v1 as well as group v group.

Necromancers are also one of, if not THE most expencive classes to play with.
You only have 1 nuke Death Spike , well 2 if you count Curse Death Link.
Death Spike must use Cursed Bones to fire. Bones are sold by an NPC for 304adena each. Add that to the cost of BSPS and your epences effectively Double or triple when you go out to hunt mobs.
However, I've been digging my Necro a lot and wouldn't have it any other way. great class imo.

take it from a WS who says necro really isnt that expensive to lvl
you really shouldnt be useing death spike until B grade and at around 56 you can use it on full spam and still turn a profit
at 70+ (keep in mind thats where the grind really starts) you can 3 hit mobs with death spike and still break even
SH is still the best pve toon by far and spends at least half if not more than a necro does while lvling
both classes at 70+ can kill a mob for 300 adena that drops up to 3000 adena
