Two friends want to level up !!!

General Discussion Started Last reply 27 posts
Hello community.
Well we are 2 friends wanting to start lineage 2 (probably Franz).
I want to hear some suggestions as to what chars we could create. We ask for two toons that
- Will hunt always side by side.
- Start by the same starting village.(to avoid 0-20 solo grinding)
- Level quite efficiently (no-ss hunting and quest maniacs)
- Be both active (I mean not the one being the buffer/healer of the other and then sitting for 20 minutes ... )

In a kind of a poll i will suggest some combos that i am thinking based on skills(referring to 2nd jobs although i see them distant in the future ... 'cause of casual gaming).
1.Warcryer / Destroyer
2.Warcryer / Tyrant
3.Shillien Knight / Phantom Ranger
4.Bladedancer / Phantom Ranger
5.Temple Knight / Silver Ranger
6.Swordsinger / Silver Ranger
7.Paladin(or Dark Avenger) / Bounty Hunter
8.Paladin(or Dark Avenger) / Hawkeye
9.Paladin(or Dark Avenger) / Gladiator

As you can there are a lot of nice combinations.
Or all the above combos with a magician in the role of the damage dealer.

Any recommendations are welcome.
Thank you all in advance!!

(Franz watch out ... we are coming!!!)

2 hawkeyes with prophet buffbot

Buffbot option NOT INCLUDED !!!

it is now..
If one of you would not mind playing a healer, I would suggest a Shillien Elder with either an abyss walker, a bladedancer or a spellhowler, or possibly prophet and hawkeye. On a whole, the Shillien Elder is simply the best small group/duo buffer there is.

Moreover, I would suggest learning ways to make money outside of questing, because that stops being good really fast after level 10 or so - look into night fishing and manoring, playing the market, etc. Your aim should be to make more money hunting when using SS than when not doing so.
BD and SwS

yes i knwo they aint the same race... but their pretty close and its a very nice combo for parties later on..
They don't have to be the same race at all. You receive travel tokens when you begin (after you kill the Gremlins etc), so travelling to another starter village isn't a problem, although being LE/DE could cause issues when you SoE.
Strictly from the ones you listed, Tank + Hawkeye is a very good PvP choice. Paladin can root down opponents and hold their aggro, while the Hawkeye knocks them off in 3-4 shots. Paladin has also become a decent force by themselves, since they can't be kited efficiently anymore. Hawkeye has always been good at PvP. (This is at higher levels. PvP at lower levels is wasting grind time.)

It's a good combo for training as well. Tanks are needed to hold aggro so an archer can stand and fire without having to kite all the time. At higher levels you'll begin to need a healer, so your tank won't have to sit as often, and to keep you from dying if things go bad. Making friends with a buffer in game is ALWAYS helpful, no matter what class you roll.

Anything you listed will give you two decent characters, but I've seen this particular combination work well together in game already.

Welcome to L2.
I would suggest a SE/Phantom Ranger combo. Those seem to level pretty fast together. Put the SE in armor with duals and you will have a lot of fun.
You won't do any good, grindign willb e painfull slow with all the setups abow.

Fastest possible leveling ingame is an SE/SH, and SE + Anything works very very well more or less.

One of you really gonna need to play suportclass.
Swordsinger and Silverranger seems like a nice option. Could be tough to begin with, but once you're in your 50s it'll be tasty good.

While everyone else gives you the twink or power setup, here's my take based on being a poor ol' grunt.

1)The game now boosts HP regen a big amount pre-40 while Newbie buffs and instant herbs all make the sub-40 levels much, much easier. Thus, you won't need as much 'healing' power until you both reach second class change and mobs power starts to really outpace top grade equip. (non-OE'd)

2)New players now start with special teleport tokens to teleport around for free. You get 20 and they only work if you are L19 or lower. This means that you can both start in seperate areas and just port back and forth for skills enough times that only quest restrictions need be an issue. Just be sure to teleport back when you are near L20 for the start of the first class change quests and meet back up afterwards.

3)Since you want to 'play' together with as little downtime as possible your gonna want to use two complementary classes or at least two that will have downtime at roughly the same time.

4)Thus these are my suggested combinations...

[Melee]
Char 1 should be either a Shillien Elder (Light Armor + Melee weapon) or a Orc Warcryer (Light or Heavy + Melee weapon)
Char 2 can be just about any melee tank, DD or fighter. You could even go Warlord, but that requires a bit more dedication bewteen you and less flexibility.

It's possible to just go with two melee chars, but the mix for that is more restrictive. 2 Tyrants or Shillien Knights would be optimal, althought you could just as well go 2 Paladins, Destroyers, or Gladiators. Its just that the latter will have a harder time reducing downtime.

[Ranged]
Either two archers or two mages. The archers will have a bit less downtime once you can get 'cheapshot' SA bows, but you'll probably want daggers for the sub-40 levels anyway.
Running two mages will cost the most however and downtime will be the most of all your choices. Even if you level without shots with two mages the downtime will be frequent without one of you being a recharger. (But that would be boring for the recharger.)

[Other]
Go for two summoners. You can do the pre-40 levels with top NG and mid D (Shillien Knife) level mage equipment. Post 40 your equipment starts to mean less so you can afford to go cheaper with it. I'd suggest one of you be a Phantom Summoner and the other be either an elemental summoner or a Warlock. You could both be the same type, but I think you'll be happier with different chars. I hesitate to suggest one of you be a Necromancer...simply because almost everyone plays them like a Nuker, just more expensive. But if you avoid 'the way everyone plays them' it would be possible to duo effectively with another summoner while bringing some added 'oh-crap' fixit power along for emergencies at the cost of just a little more adena. Just have the other summoner's summon be the 'tank'
and the necro use his summon as the DD, and debuffs the target keeping the cursed bone expensive Death spike spell for emergencies.
Wow--not much to add after PainAmplifier's post! Do what he said!

I will throw in another comment or two.
Presumably since the two of you are new to game, you want to "level, level, level". We all did.
2 Important points:

1) Some classes 'level' 1-30 faster than others (but aren't necessarily the best to have +40).

2) You are not locked into your first decision immediately. The new player bonuses will be added permenantly to whichever toon you get to lvl 6 first. But you can try more than one combination for at least an hour or two and run 2-3 toons together up to lvl 5.

Also, I'm not too sure I would advise you to 'group' 1-20. I think that might actually take you longer than if you did it solo (1-15 isn't 'grinding'--it's pretty fast). "Grinding" occurs much higher than 40 imo.

All that being said--I've played 13 toons on 3 servers past first class change in past 10 months and some level at lower levels faster than others.
You can get a dark elf fighter and dark elf mystic to 20 in the same area pretty fast. They give you some options at 40 (2nd class change). Their first class change quests are simple and quick.
I personally feel the human mystic levels reasonably fast but the human fighter is ponderous.
Orc fighter levels fast to 20 but the shaman a bit slower.
Never played a light elf mystic---the elven fighter is faster than human or dwarf to 20 (all things being equal) but slower than DE or Orc.

For goodness sakes run all the quests you can! Read up on all low quests and do all weapon quests available (usually lvl 10-12).
Just some thoughts........
Yeah, like PainAmp said, you need the classes to be complimentary. Alot of people are mentioning classes that would be good in PVP, or whatever, but the first question. You want 2 toons that will party PVE together very well, and for one not to be strictly a buffbot. Or you worried about the PVP aspects?

Alot of choices may take longer to level up, but they will be useful together after. I see alot of choices that would be plain useless if you want to be able to play together at higher levels and not be a buffbot to the other.

First off, if you like the ranged idea. BOTH go ranged. A Nuker and an archer would work well together, as well as 2 nukers or 2 archers. Any other combo with ranged toons will not work.

The orc classes you choose would work well together. Another option the SE with an AW, or any other DE tank class. The SE is a buffer/healer, but with a good weapon can also help dish out a bit of damage.

Other then that, and Tank/Melee combo will work well together. 2 Melees will not be to bad. 2 tanks, not such a good idea.

Hope this helps.
ideally you want to have one of you initiate your spree and target first. this person will either be a big damage dealer, OR a tank. in this game, they are not the same. most tanks dont DD with the slight exception of the SK which CAN dd with the best of them given the correct situation and setup; however this isnt whats being argued here.

the other of you will finish off, while the first of you will start the next mob.

currently i twobox.

i twoboxed my way to 52 on a sorc and se combo both from scratch, both with no prior gear donations. this is NOT the same as what you are attempting to accomplish with your friend. having said that i would say PainAmplifier's suggestion of levelling two summoners side by side would be the best solution for you that will teach you everything you need to know about every other class because of their inherent pre-40 abilities, and post40 gear combinations.

for example: two Phantom Summoners will level as Dark wizards pre-40. this will teach you how to nuke.
post 40 you become slaves to your summons. the right combination of nuking while your summon fights, and using the right gear will teach you how to master the fine art of using your summons as a tank, or meatshield, or DD. never all 3. in robes and mana-up weapons, your summoner character plays the role of healer and buffer for the summon. you control its movements, but are as weak as paper.

in light and using a dagger or fist or other fighter weapon, you become LESS of a buffer and you focus a lot on inflicting your own damage while your summon takes most of the aggro (BEWARE: this is a very tricky thing to pull off and may cost you dearly in equipment. do this if your adenas are high and brains are low.)

while you can mix and match, using a different summon for a different reason, you can eventually build yourself up to duoing in catacombs on whole rooms of 4x hp mobs. (very good exp).

all in all tho, every summoner has its troubles.i cant suggest any one summoner class over another, but i will say this : if youre gonna level two humans, try making two necromancers. using body-to-mind they can regain mana very fast, they have easily and arguably better cast speed setup flexibility for pvp, and their summons are freggin TANKS! you arent a true summoner, but you can debuff your opponents and nuke the hell outta them.
Just wanted to add one last bundle of advice.

You get 7 character slots per account...don't be afraid to use them!

On average, unless your really able to abuse the manor properly, (And this is harder now that many know how.) at some point you WILL outlevel your gear. Sure, you could grind A grade level mobs in C grade, but why suffer so much? This is especially true if your brand new to the game. Thus don't be afraid to level up a couple of 'money makers' alongside your 'main' characters.

Also, trying a couple of characters out gives you the ability to decide if you really, really want to go SE or WC, or maybe Destroyer versus Gladiator as leveling one of each race up to L20 doesn't take all that long and gives you a starting idea how each one will play in the long run. Having secondary characters can also be a good idea to prevent your 'mains' from outleveling each other when only one of you is playing due to real life interference or other reasons.

Often people level a character up so far, then reroll because 'the grass is greener' on another class only to go back later because all they really needed was a 'fresh look' at what made them want to play their original character in the first place. Having some alts around to play with is a good way to keep the game fresh and fun despite those grindy speedbumps that exist or we imagine exist. (And the first time you hit one of those "Level Walls" you will *feel it*.)

Just be aware of what equipment can be handed down or aquired cheaply and you're well on your way to having 7 times the fun from one game.
if you dont wanna play a pure healer/buffer, I did sugest a WC, they can DD, heal and buff.
with that I would say a BD.
even if other DDs may do a bit more damage, the BD will buff the WCs damage and I think that will be better then having a better DD instead of the BD
WC+BD would be a nice duo :)

1.Warcryer / Destroyer
2.Warcryer / Tyrant
3.Shillien Knight / Phantom Ranger
4.Bladedancer / Phantom Ranger
5.Temple Knight / Silver Ranger
6.Swordsinger / Silver Ranger
7.Paladin(or Dark Avenger) / Bounty Hunter
8.Paladin(or Dark Avenger) / Hawkeye
9.Paladin(or Dark Avenger) / Gladiator

so many flaws; lets see:
1.can work.
2.can work.
3. wont work.
4.will work.(specally higher lvls)
5.can work, maybe.
6.will work.
7. can work.
8.wont work.
9.wont work.

you can't mix match a tank with long range DD, unless the tank can root. even then it's going to be all the DD doing the work while the meely/tank wont do much. tanks don't do much dmg as a DD.

tryant and destroyer are both good DD's, but close range and no hate or root. but do massive dmg with the right set up.

WC even OL are really good, but OL is harder cause they don't do party buffs but do clan/ally buffs...so if you bouth join a clan then it would be good. OL has really good skills that usefull to a clan or ally when you get to higher lvls and want to start PvPing.(high heals and CP heals, or AoE skills and drains)

SwS/BD....wow, talk about 2 really realy good DD/support classes. and very good when you can't party with your friend. easy to pick up a party. never seen any that duo exclusviely, but they can. they make any class worrk good, but need to be mindfull of mp management.

Sws/bd can manage just about any one with them, can root mobs and make any one kill alot faster.(excentual in PvP)

Main proplem with 7-9. kill power, tanks aren't strong in killing, as mentioned above, this is fundamental in most if not all MMO's specially in L2. BH isn't a good DD. (but some times they can be)

DA if you choose that class over a pally, will lose out on more XP cause the panther sucks XP from them so any other class that lvls purely with him will quil;y out lvl him.

Pally is best on undead type, and as mentioned in another post has root, and can heal(which wasn't mentioned). If you did a pally/PR or HE, you get "pain of saggitarius" at 58 that lets them gain for XP, so a duo of pally/HE the pally can be a life saver.

Myself as a HE I prefer to lvl on undead cause of their weakness to holy effects, so they go down faster, add a pally with me and we can lvl in FoTD all of the way to 75, or stop at 73 and head into pagens temple.

There is many set ups, but I'd deffently like the summoner ideas and you should think about a summoner, they are a very good solo class, and even better as a duo.
SE + Pole..
Got a SE up level 50 25 day of fair play. (i work for a living)
I would advise against one of you going ranged and one going melee. It's just not fun for a melee to duo with an archer, because they would be running after the mob most of the time.

While sws + SR and BD + PR would be lethal duos, they wouldn't be much fun.

These two...

1.Warcryer / Destroyer
2.Warcryer / Tyrant

...sound the most fun to me. Especially WC + Tyrant, but that's because I've played both and enjoyed both a lot :)
Only (or biggest) downside to WC, imo, is that they don't get ww. But it would only really be a problem for the WC itself and the destroyer, since tyrant gets nice running speed with agile movement (in light armor) and gets totem spirit wolf quite early. But trouble is, only one totem can be active at one time, so wolf probably wouldnt be first choice except when running to (or from) places, and some totems makes you run slowww!

one of the most fun times I had recently is my HE and a bishop.

that was really fun, we where in seal of shilen (FG), and while I killed the falibi and theafs, if we got argo from the doom knights he could kill them in 2 hits with his MoH. the extra atk speed and P atk from lvl 1 zerk, and from HW was really nice coupled with my SE's buff and GSAP's.

Pain of sag. made life easier on MP along with the use of the pots, and his heals.

Was the bishop melee, or how does that relate to what I said?

Wow.

Just wow.

Dont listen to this idiot please.

Play something FUN that you will enjoy.

if that ends up being tank and BH, so [censored] be it.

BD + PR = ownage duo, and trust me, as a bd myself, i dont get the least bit bored seeing the PR 1-shot alll those lovely mobs.

But play what you LIKE.

Experiment on another server with some duos untill you find something that you like, then move back to your original server and gogo!

And champa why would you even ask that? Its Nohl.....he doesnt understand anything exept telling people to ebay money when they get scammed.
Sure, okay. It's just not my cup of tea when the mob is dead before I get to it  And I know I'm not the only one. To each their own, I guess :)

And champa why would you even ask that? Its Nohl.....he doesnt understand anything exept telling people to ebay money when they get scammed.

Heh :p
Go both for Spellhowlers. One SH levels solo fast. Two of them? They will be an exp train...
Worry less about class/race and more about playing and having fun??

I'm shooting for generic advice here.

I'm perhaps the last guy on boards to advise PvP--I think eveyone on Lionna has killed one of my toons a time or two. I'm mostly a pve carebear sort of guy.

Folks I know play orc fighters well in PvP. But (to OP) you have the issue of actually leveling that toon while playing with your friend.

Answers like "always play x + y" and "never play x + y" are a bit shallow.

You won't hit lvl 40 in a week (as a number of folks on Franz just showed us).
Levels One through about 15 go really fast but on most toons, sometime in the mid-teens you start to notice a slow down of how quickly those levels come. It's not a big slow down but it's no longer a "level every 5 minutes". True tanks and dwarves slow down the most there. In mid-20's, a solo tank is ponderous. Let's be honest, you and your friend won't "always" play together.

The toons you play have to GET to where they can participate in higher parts of the game--meaning you have to enjoy the journey (or learn to).

For duo--if you pick tank, you will need 2nd toon to support tank. Ideally a nuker/healer who can be summoner (cause tank patk sucks). It is possible to have DD support tank quite nicely (glad/BD to be) but as noted, ranged DD's get frustrating for the tanker.

If you go DD as toon #1--you have a lot more flexibility in 2nd toon.

Two ranged DD's work well. Two nukers work well, etc.

I've had a lot of fun leveling toons paired with just about everything in the game--it's always a challenge to learn how to play. Take two dwarf artisans with poles into NOS at 25 and you'll have a gas!!!! (though pvp is gonna be pretty challenging!!! lmao).

Try out varied toons. Try another server (hey! it's free) as one poster said. Enjoy the journey. No matter what toon you pick, when you reach the point you wanna PvP someone will come along and kill you anyway--it would be a shame to have "winning at PvP" as your only goal in L2. This is a much richer game than that imo.
Just play!!!!
Oh, Pain also told you that you will outlevel your gear. The idea of "level at all costs" isn't necessarily a good idea imo. You will be level 25 with about 100k in the warehouse. I'd argue level slower (steady) and conserve every adena. Learn the game "deeply rather than quickly"?? Maybe. Kill green mobs quickly, take the adena, and crush the next one--over and over till you could just puke! (lmao)
In short, if you define game as "fastest to level, wins" then you've already lost! Folks have been playing this game a long time and are WAAAAY ahead of you. Define your own game.
well.

Imo, go BD and SE. You will suck in pvp in no time, but the duo for xp is simply awesome. Get the SE a weapon too, some haste 2 pots and youre set.
