# of patches/promotions till L2 becomes generic

Given player base demands/requests ("i dropped on death--waaaah"; "I can't make any money in game!<whine>; etc).

I am wondering how many patches or changes it will take for L2 to add all the generic content from the more popular MMORPGS.

I think that as this game continues to migrate (now we get a set of changes every 4 weeks whether we need them or not) it will lose it's distinct soul and become more characteristic of all the other cookie-cutter MMORPGs.....those common themes include: easieir and less grinding, faster leveling, command economy, no-risk death, runner beasts, perfectly equal classes, etc.

I applaud NCSOft for being responsive. Personally I don't appreciate all these 'softening' changes of the game.

Will the trend to "WoW-ifying" L2 continue?
are you kidding me? I think the PvE of WoW and the PvP of l2 would be the PERFECT game

tried Anarchy Online?

egads drakkos, how has l2 been wowified? there are literally a dozen other mmo's that those concepts came from and are by no means unique to either l2 or wow.

what i am waiting for is a great turn-based-text-mmo that requires roleplay to pvp.

i think i found it in l2.

reasons: if you dont attack first, it isnt your turn to win. 2: PvE in l2 means Player versus EVERYONE. there is no grinding on mobs. the high levels (as well as anyone with fake death) make sure of this fact. 3: you can kill a mob without even using your mouse. keyboard sufficeth to slay the dragons.

Well, ok, I would have to agree with that. The WoW quests are more fun for me.

I don't mind the "not dropping on death".

I do mind how 'easy' it is to level up now. Being high level should mean something.

Of course, if people can't compete in the game they won't play it and then you will have a very small population. Not thrilled about that either.

I've always been for the idea of alternate rules servers. This way players who don't have the time or don't like the current game can still enjoy it. Then players who prefer a more hardcore game can enjoy the type of game they like.

I think it's funny how many of the hardcore players are always against alternate rules servers. Ok, fine.... now NC is just making the game a bit easier.

Maybe if NC would have just made the alternate rules server in the first place more hardcore players would still have the type of game they like. Just a thought.

there are literally a dozen other mmo's that those concepts came from and are by no means unique to either l2 or wow.

So, how many more patches before L2 loses it's unique-ness and becomes generic?
Sounds like you're making my argument aren't you?

how many more turn-based-text-mmo's are there?
2 maybe 3. Tops.

IMHO We have already morphed into a WoW like game with the softening of deaths and the non-dropping of items.

Kinda Sad if you ask me, you take the best graphics in the genre you build a decent game with decent features and then vanilla it down to a level of all the other games in the market. Sigh...
As to not dropping on death: You're not in A grade, Drakkos. Losing a single A grade helmet would be a worse blow than losing all equipped gear including weapon in B grade.

It's been partially mitigated because of spoilable helm recs, but the TOI quest to get helmets is just ridiculously insane. If you've never actually tried to get a helmet like that, you have no idea just how absurd the quest is.
How foolish of a coorporation to want to change their content so that the masses will enjoy playing the game. Shame on the business for trying to make money. You're right they should keep everything just as it is and let other MMO's run off with the majority of the MMO customers so that the players that like the game the way it is albeit a minority don't get upset.
The problem is that L2 simply sucks far too much to make it as a generic game. It is nothing without the grind. Well, nothing except a very bad game.

Or not much else happens because of the horrid grind. I couldn't imagine anything better for bringing life to L2 then a massive boost in XP and drops. Like 100x+.

hmmm... I've got a better idea.

(since I like the grind and that it is hard to get to high lvl)

Why not completely redo the quest system and add more to do so that people of all levels can have a more varied play experience. Then again, maybe it's too late?
Then you're stuck PvPing all day, and you realise all PvP is is a big joke, a flex of PvE muscle (class choice, buffs, gear, pot spam) - except PvE muscle wouldn't mean a thing then.

The PvP in this game in and out of itself sucks.

ETA: Sovrath, what's there to revamp that wouldn't go against the very essence of what L2 is (like this patch)? People don't want to die and lose experience, even at levels where it's incredibly easy to get back.

People don't want the challenging PvE where things might go wrong at any second.

People simply don't want to have funin this game - because if they did, they could, but they don't.
I think there could be a healthy compremise like maybe at each lvl give a good 1 time only quest that would give a significant increase in Experience to make people feel as if their actually able to get to that next hard level. I do agree that if it were made too easy people would get bored and quit because of that, but there must be a happy medium.

Granting your argument (that I don't know serious aspects of game yet)---what is the challenge if all risk is removed?
If I can never die, or if I DO die nothing bad happens, then where's the challenge?

A bunch of you run into a risky area as A-grades---a couple die, no drops, great rez's from clan benefits, minor exp loss....guess you don't have to worry about risk anymore.

Your argument suggests that some poor slup at lvl 32 with full brig can shrug off the 5 million adena brig helm he worked for. That's being a bit ego-centric imo.

At some point so much risk will be eliminated that you may as well play a game deck--just 'restart' when it gets tough and you can start over from the last safe place.
Nice---but that's not my definition of L2.

... but I like fun ...
There's a difference between risk and game-ending risk.

The XP loss of a single death at level 78 is about the equivalent from deleveling from 50 to 1. Granted the XP opportunities are better, but that's still a good three hours in a really good party (five in a mediocre party). That's not so bad, all things considered.

Losing a helmet or weapon and trying to get a new one legit can take months. I know one friend took over nine months to get her A grade helmet, she kept having bad luck with turnins on the quest and when she finally got the first helmet rec, it blew up and she had to start over.

My other friend has a Doom Crusher with Health SA -- there probably aren't more than three or four of those weapons on the entire server because the key items are rare to the point raid boss drops are the only real source. And the level 12 soul crystal was gotten by the last event. It would take months' worth of income to replace that, and that's assuming we could even FIND another doom crusher to replace it with -- we got incredibly lucky getting one at all.

I certainly don't have any boss jewelry, but you know how rare those are. There are what, two necklace of valakas on the server? Some drops simply can't be replaced.

And yeah, losing a brig helm would suck, but firstly it's realistic to hunt the key items (the only expensive part) oneself; it's how I made mine back in C1. Secondly, it might take weeks to re-earn the money but it shouldn't take months.
Then I hope you're having fun in PvE and ocasionally doing difficult things there. :p
I like to do difficult things in PvE. I don't like dropping my gear in the process, though :D
Why do people think these ideas came from WOW? Leveling and pvp MMOs were around well before graphics based RPG even existed.

The playing field in L2 is tough to keep level. People always adapt and find new ways to exploit the system. Daggers were FOTM, then nukers became FOTM. Nukers didn't change to become stronger, just more kids rerolled from daggers to nukers because they wanted to feel special. New weaknesses are exposed in the RPS, you balance them and continue to progress.

L2 first had reduced drop chance on equipped items. Then weapons became items of extremely high value around B grade. One weapon was 3x the price of all your armor and jewelry so the drop on weapons was removed. Now A helmets are so expensive they equate or even are more expensive than some A weapons. The solution, remove the drop chance and integrate some other death penalty. I think they should've gone a different route, personally. But that doesn't make this game a "WoW" wannabe. "WoW" is only wow because of the warcraft fanbase that existed long before the game. L2 didn't have that bonus (except in Korea...where L2 is huge).
I don't know where you guys are getting this no loss on death. There are many times where myself or one of our clan mates is on all by themselves.
At this point, with my play time and level. If I die and I can't get a good rez, that is more than a week's worth of work for me to get that exp back. I know that some of the level 72+s it can be much, much longer.
I am glad we dont' drop anymore, but I would have preferred that you can't drop equipted items. Otherwise, all of those extra weapons, pots, etc can drop. They are worth less but it keeps the fun in the game.

I am holding judgement though until I see what the lemming kills are doing this weekend. Figure I woudl go to Orc Village and see what the dwarfs are doing now.
arigato: theres a slight distiction to be made.

loosing any item worth hundreds of millions is (from a purely objective standpoint) the worst thing possible in the game.

subjectively tho, try to see just how untrue that statement is....

while it is true not many have market dwarves that sit in giran forever at level 3 making adena hand over fist, it is ALSO true that all such players trying to get next grade equipment have equal difficulty to get next grade equipment.

5million at level 32 is just as impossible as 170m at level 66. both times youre well into your grade, with an incomplete set. both cases involve more work than conceivable without resorting to manoring/stripping alts/scamming/training.

so sure, while you lost your a grade helmet, ill do the same amount of work to get back my D grade helmet.

in terms of loosing exp, the case is the same. yes, i said that and i stand by it. exp at level 78 is slow i will grant you. but you can make it back just as fast as i can when i loose exp at 25.

heres the reason: at 78 the grind (im told) takes 6 hours even in non top-grade equipment to make 3%

at 25 im in NG still. if i die to a mob i loose 10%. the amount of time to make that back is the same. those 6 hours i will make back only what i loose.

you wanna call me a noob? well i cant hunt the best mobs, i dont have top grade d gear, and i dont have 80m on a main to blow should something go wrong. im ... NEW!! YAY!!!!

in general (not directed any anyone in particular) : you high levels are so noob it really scares me to think how you survive outside of your parent's basement.

Then I hope you're having fun in PvE and ocasionally doing difficult things there. :p

Ahhhh... well remember, what I am hoping to take away from the L2 experienceis slightly different than other players.

I don't mind the hard grind one bit. But I use that time to think and relax. The grind is sort of like a meditation (without the candles and the nonesense). It really doesn't affect me at all and I find it enjoyable on a different level.

And all of it is so that I can enjoy myself during sieges (which is the whole reason I love L2). Though I don't have to participate in sieges everytime. I look at it as an event.

However, from having tried other games, I have learned that quests can be fun and an "end" in and of themelves.

I mostly think of the WoW quests as that is the first time in an online game when I paused and realized I was enjoying myself while doing a quest. Now, there's nothing really that special about those quests except the presentation is different, they are easy to track, they don't require running to several different npc's except to actually finish a "leg" of the quest and get a reward from that.

You also know what the reward is and many times it is something of interest. You also get a significant xp reward as well.

But L2 isn't really about that. I do think that they should give larger xp rewards for these quests.

I don't think that would "Wowize" L2.

L2 is still an open pvp game. I know some people believe that there is little to know xp on death due to clan halls or blessed rez. But not everyone has a clan hall or can afford multiple blessed rez. I am also a little reticent to constantly bother clanmates if I die. I know that is the beauty of being in a clan but I also want to respect the playtime of my clanmates.

Does dropping make L2 a little less hardcore? Yes. Do I mind it? No.

But I can understand why some players will be ******. Especially those who really love the "all or nothin" type of gameplay.
I love the new lack of dropping an item on death and the herbs make L2 PvE more interesting. L2 is so deep in its detail it cannot possibly get generic.
IMO I don’t think that L2 will become generic. I due agree that some of the quest could go a bit deeper but I don’t want them to become like WOW. I played WOW for 2 months and got bored way to fast. The quest story lines were in depth, but they were too easy. The game was just too easy, and I just couldn’t stand it. But in wow defense, it caters towards the casual player and they don’t try to make it out to be anything other than that. I believe that NC knows that the Lineage 2 player base is more of a hard core group, and won’t do anything to harm their player base. That is if they learned anything from Star wars Galaxies. They overhauled the hole game simplifying it class wise and made a very nice quest system to make you feel is if you were in the star wars story, but it became too easy and a lot like WOW. SWG lost a HUGE amount of the player base that had been playing form start.
But remember, L2 quests aren't really hard for the most part. They are just tedious. Though I suppose that that could make them hard. The only quests that are hard are the quests that rely upon you taking down raid bosses if you are not "in" with a large group.
As long they dont introduce pve only zones i am a happy girl 8)
Ya, a stacked team with healer/BD and 7 archers or nukers wiping out your XP team before you even know they showed up (unless you're using a 3rd party program) is so much fun.

Getting trained by jerks with a stack of 110k BSOEs and losing some 100 mil piece of gear is fun too. Losing gear to the expected 3x a day client crash, even better.

Excuse the sarcasm, this change is great!! and unless NCsoft fixes the absolutelly horrid PvP (gank) system, PvE only areas would be perfect.
Maybe this is NCsoft's way of reducing the number of cheaters. If people find leveling and money making easier, the demand for botting and ebaying will decrease.

Anything to change the current mentality of using any means necessary to gain the advantage, is ok in my book.
I wouold have to draw the line at pve only areas. I dont mind the other changes. Last night I went on a mission to see if all these changes really soften the blow for a new player. Granted the toon I made got top ng gear right away. It took me 2.5 hours for level 1-15 with the use of the noob buffs and the sweet herbs that drop. Overall I like the changes. pve only areas would be a sad thing for L2 though.
A little objection from someone who has recently worked on both and given up on the A:

This is not true. There are limiting factors other than the amount of money you own for most basic money-making methods. Manoring alone will comfortably cover your gear - hell, with only one reroll in a duo and VERY little market playing, I'm mostly set for C Grade and have in fact started saving up mats for my B Grade.

For A? It's looking like a new reroll.

Wrong, the amount of work to get a brig helm will never be equated to an A grade helm recipe of 60%.

At 78, you do not lose 3%, you lose 4%. At 25, you lose 8%. Your internal calulator is horribly wrong if you think even a whole level at 25 is equal to 4% at 78. Whoever told you it was possible for 3% in 6 hours has buffers or is in a group. They will not solo at that rate.

This flame, added to your level average in your signature as well as the information you have misconstrued here has totally destroyed your credibility on this subject for me. You cannot pretend to know what its like at 78 unless you have played at 78.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of quests to do for equipment at all grades, but people just don't do them.

Nah, they shouldn't do that.

That's not to say if a game has that then it's bad. But that's not THIS game.

you are thingking TOO OBJECTIVELY.

the numbers dont equate true. i even said that. and i wasnt comparing dying.

try to think of it from someone who HASNT been to 78 and subbed. remember when it was so hard for you in prelude? thats how hard it still is for little noobies (yes, there are still noobies) every time they go out and grind.

go ask crunk_22, or take a gander at the player questions forum for them. noobies always posting "where should i hunt" "what gear" etc etc. ask them how long it took to get level 20, some will say over 2 weeks. by that time you (at level 78) made 80% of a level and made literally hundreds of millions of adena.

its comparatively the same. gear costs less pre 20, and you also make less adena.

dont hand me the old arguement that arigato handed me. just cause i wasnt at 78 doesnt mean i dont know what its like. the game never changes. level 15, level 52, level 2billion its all the same. your constantly aiming for new gear/new level/spare cash.

lets try this then... all you level 78's .. reroll, and solo 1-20 without twinking yourself, no ss spam, without grouping, and without buying your toon the next grade gear. once youre into D, do it again. see how long you can hold out without taking your main and donating yourself some gear. betcha it takes a lot longer than you anticipate.

A little objection from someone who has recently worked on both and given up on the A:

See where MalineII is going with this? By the time she is ready for S grade, she will have to reroll another 2 toons to support her material supplies needed for that grade.......

She clearly points out that one toon can not do everything his / her self, they have to reroll not only once, but multiple times to get that gear they need to make their new tier equipment for their main character.

Too me this is broken game mechanics when they force you to reroll new toons for the sake of gathering materials.

Take the quote for example, realistically, by the time you acually started to gather your own Brigadine Helmet designs your 32+, by the time you acually find 13 of them, you would be well into C grade........thats the point.

I recently level'd a toon from 1 - 40, without using any money from the toon i was leveling for soul shots etc, and sold ALL my parts / deisign drops to the NPC merchants, i was lucky to make 4 million adena by the time i hit 40, this is not including what one would spend on SS, Porting around, Consumables ie: SoE's, the list can varie depending on class.

Most new people who start the game fresh and untainted from the more advanced players here in L2, dont even know what the hell manoring is and dont even worry about it until they are around 40 - 50 anyway, most people dont even know what the hell base mats are for and find themselves selling everything they can to the NPC merchants only to find themselves kicking themselves in the *** wishing they kept the first 30 - 40 levels worth of materials they sold for cash to upgrade their gear from NPC store merchants.

We, the more advanced players of L2 tend to take this for advantage and just think new players will just simply know or be intrigued at what a manor is and how it works that they will jump head over heals into it and not think back, but truth is, like any new player in a new game world, they just want to level up, do quests and explore, the last thing on their mind is buying 5000 seeds and seeding 5000 of the same mob over and over again because maybe Animal Bone might be of use sometime down the track when they have no clue what AB is even for to begin with.

Point is, there is a problem with this game if people are forced to reroll to gather materials over and over again, this is tedious and frustrating for those who have been doing it for the last few years. I do not class this as a hard core aspect of the game, i find it to be the more boring and not needed part of the game, and can be used in a different manner to make it more exciting, fun and useful to say the least.

lets try this then... all you level 78's .. reroll, and solo 1-20 without twinking yourself, no ss spam, without grouping, and without buying your toon the next grade gear. once youre into D, do it again. see how long you can hold out without taking your main and donating yourself some gear. betcha it takes a lot longer than you anticipate.

I can bet that majority will have quit even before they get to 20 because the grind from 14 - 20 is quite long without being twinked out and buffed by 60+ buffers.

how many people in prelude-c3 used dwarves to farm mats for money? its the same thing.
Well its good to see im not the only person to re-roll to make up some adena and buy better gear. I just started what will be a TH. I know this time around I will be able to afford his gear all the way through B grade. This is a result of leveling up a toon so far. Stripping it down. Then leveling the next one to the next higher grade. I think this will be my last re-roll though. Once I get to A grade and cant afford it im just going to stick it out craft and what not. Lol for the last 2 years I have just thought I was insane re-rolling over and over to try to move forward. This time is looking very promising. Unfortunatly no one really knows who I am any more after all my identity crisis. :p

A summoner can solo at almost that rate.
But yeah, most people can only "solo" at that rate with an OOP buffer/healer/recharger.

You cannot be serious?!

At level 25 it takes you about 15-20 minutes to get 10% (solo, unbuffed, in low D grade, not using any shots!). At level 78 it takes you about 9 hours in a good party (or solo with a boxed buffer if you happen to be a strong DD class) to get back 4%. That is about 27-36 times longer!
Not in bizzaro world Melian.. only in bizzaro world

XD
I've don lv 24-25 with an SE ( yes SE aka lv 16 nukes ) in top NG in about 1 hour or so hunting, This is of course with an out of party recharger.

At 73 I get almost 2% per hour in a **** good group, and that counting in out of party healer / buffer and just DD's in the group so LOL.

I would love to be able to pull back 4% death in less the a few minutes.

Then again sure thats courting out out of party players, but hell even soloing with top NG at that lv is not that bad, as you get almost 0,3-0,5% per mob. And not like 0,00-0,01% per mob that I got right now.

Yeah that was kind of a oO moment for me, too.

When I had my academy nuker at 25 I was gaining a level every 25 minutes or so -- in topgrade gear with buffs. A 78 with topgrade gear and buffs is lucky to make a level in 140 hours (and that's a VERY good party/soloing with OOP buffer; your estimate of 225 hours is probably closer to average).
HELLOOOOOOO ALL YOU NUMBNUTZES

youre looking objectively! dont!

For A? It's looking like a new reroll.

perhaps i should requote myself for emphasis....

5million at level 32 is just as impossible as 170m at level 66. both times youre well into your grade, with an incomplete set. both cases involve more work than conceivable without resorting to manoring/stripping alts/scamming/training.

how many people in prelude-c3 used dwarves to farm mats for money? its the same thing.

Luke, Deaconblues, and Craftalot have equipped themselves, my BW robe wearing buffer, my top D SO, my top C SH, Luke's subclass (which he hasn't even started yet) and 50% of my S grade. Still have several hundred million adena lying around, and can sell the subclass items (I have every set/weapon for C > A grade...some overenchanted). That's a 74 Paladin with all that gear...and tanks are some of the most expensive toons to level. The lower your patk, the more expensive leveling is for melee. There is absolutely no problem with the economy.
die much?
