I am level 8 and did that quest in the elf starting villiage that transports me to that busy city with all the bots. Is there a newbie area there to level in or will I have to try and make my way back to the elf village?
Also, when will it make sense to group? I can understand the value of a steep learning curve but I do hope that it at least allows me to have fun with others while I am grinding.

Go talk to the dwarf in the specialty shop. He will give you the next part of the quest to return home. You can check your quest log to see the next step of each quest you take.

Calladucci or smth in luxury shop gives you quest so you can soe back to elven village.
Grouping starts around lvl 20. Its not really useful to group before and 20+ you still get the newbie buffs and solo overall is more profitable. But around 25 when the buffing stops you'd definetely want to start grouping.
Do all the quest you can at your level, even the quests in other starter villages. You can be in or close to top NG gear by the time you hit 20 from all the rewards you can obtain, which can be gear, and adena.
