Apparently a huge game conference is going on in Korea. I found 2 articles on IGN that might be of interest.

The first one is an East meets West (http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/744/744387p1.html) article.

There seem to be several but then they single out part one and part 2. (http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/744/744388p1.html) So I will just link to those.

We constantly speak about the differences between Western and Eastern MMOS but I wonder if we really ever try to understand the differences and similarities. I find it interesting to see people who are used to Westner MMO's complain about the whole point and click movement that seems to prevail in Eastern mmo's.

Then you have things like grind, character customization, etc.

In any case, not sure if this is of interest but it might bring a nice change to the forums over the "this needs nerfing, that needs nerfing" and "other" types of post.

Enjoy!
genious!

one thing i DO NOT WISH is for asian games to loose the audience they build the game around. i dont want to see l2 turned into typical US brewed games.

playing a game that was not designed to be developed around my country's styles makes variety fun.

let me make my view clear in a way youll understand more easily sov; mozart didnt write what he wrote with foreign cultures tastes in mind. he wrote what he wrote because he was moved to do so, and it pleased him.

devs should not loose that perspective and still aim for an audience that will appreciate their art.

after all, it IS art we are talking about.

after playing games for nigh into my 10th year (last count i had played over 1000 games spanning 5 consoles and 2 types of PC's) and i can truthfully and honestly say every game is as much a piece of art to create as painting a picture, or manufacturing a prototype. it isnt JUST about how it works or what it looks like. this is why MMO games are the most fun and artistic works to date. its like watching a movie and then its sequel and the sequel to the sequel etc. the art for the designer is truly that; a continuing work.

this is also why we the players love our devs so much. the make stuff we enjoy, then we can freely ask them to change it if it doesnt suit us, and they are happy to do so in most cases because of the art involved.

"fix ranged" postes and "eradicate bots" posts can be compared to lets say a "brahms sux" and a "take away the black keys cause chopin is overpowering my beethoven" post. i mean you can't ask the artist NOT to take a brush stroke cause it aggravates the observer. doesnt work like that.

after all the games i have played i have come to realize that every game no matter how cheezy/bot infested/bug riddled/etc is a good game.
Greetings,

Well thanks. I do appreciate the musical references. Of course, Mozart could be a [censored] when it came to money (can I say [censored] on these forums? ).

There are several parts to the east meets west article and I encourage people to read them.

I also find it sort of funny in that if people complain about the point and click movement, what would they do if they had to hit enter every time the text came to the end of the chatbox (apparently many eastern games don't have wrapping text as it is "not important")
alright dark, you asked for it. let me start casting sleep now, so you wont have to do it yourself around the 3rd paragraph.

why do you think sleep got nerfed HARD as it did? cause of the "fix necro" posts. yes, thats right, even tho they dont get aoe sleep, nor do they need to use the sleep/nuke tactic as so many others do. or used to.

this nerf was made for a reason and i have seen it.

it was because the devs got tired of posters that persist at attempting to persuade them that they were wrong to make the necromancer as strong as it is (or was/couldhavebeen/mighthavebeen). the necromancer is a unique class. a piece of art, and a magnificent one at that. it goes right along with the world created by the devs, and fits right into the spot humans need to occupy where one elven race would not. to change it means the audience thinks its not good art. screw that! fix the audience.

whether or not its a bad thing to zerg the servers with one class is ANOTHER TOPIC.

playing a game is like wearing elven robes; its not about how good the set is nor how it looks. its how each detail is as intricate and interwoven as the next regardless of how far up into the end game you are.

It's why I used to get chat banned all the time. Now I just party the people I need to speak with.

I do it too. Easist way to know when a character is mine. :o
I dream of a day when a thread remains on topic................
I actually thought this was going to be a discussion thread.....LOL...I'll learn...

Secondly, I'd like to know how Far Eastern developers approach localization. Here in the US - and I'm talking mainly from a MMORPG perspective - localization is always a hot topic. While North America can support a lot of customers, Asia represents a much vaster potential market. Almost every idea pitched to publishers is met with the question, "How would it do in Asia?" But do Far Eastern developers ever concern themselves with how Americans, British or French would approach their game? I've not yet seen any real effort to analyze quantitatively how to localize a game. I'm very curious about how Far Eastern developers approach and handle the problem.

About our's conserns of NCSoft Korea listening to our's sugestions..
No, sleep was nerfed because it was instant control in self buffed pvp and any nuker could pull a ton of mobs and survive by sleep and run.
