Hello. Yet another Noob.

Devianne Started Last reply 6 posts
Hello,

I just started L@ about 2 weeks ago and I have goofed around on a few servers. I would like to find a server to settle down on, and Devianne is starting to look like a good place.

Of course, I got my game from Direct2Drive, cause my CD-rom is down. ;) And I have no manual because of this, so I have many many questions...

For instance, how do you get rid of a death penalty? I am kinda partial to polearms recently, but I notice only 2 classes really take advantage of the polearm, Warlords and Destroyers. Will I be gimping myself to use a polearm as an Elf or Dark Elf, for instance?

Also I notice there is a lot of talk about Healers and BDs, in the end, does it really matter what class you play? Is there room for anyone depending on the skill of the player, or would it be wasting one's time to play something different?

I know, silly questions, but I have not been able to find anyone to ask, as the newbie towns in every server are pretty dead.

Thanks in advance for any replies.
Greetings and well met here on Devianne.

One thing first - you picked the right server - no matter what others will tell :P Its always a rough world in Lineage but Devianne has proven to be one of the nicer servers .. I have never regretted to be here. It has its share of bots, rude people, achievers, stupids and ********es and also a decent amount of roleplayers - so a good mix to have fun. Depending what youre after - being a scary PvPler with a high killratio or an adventurer who fights more PvE you will find people who share your interests.

Asking questions is the main thing to get on in this game as its complex. Being clueless will result in frust or useless efforts - and you shall here enjoy your time. So post whatever you need to know here - often someone will have an answer. Also helpful is the playerguide section on this forums - many good hints.

Lets see to your questions :

Death Penalty : You can get rid of it only in one way - buying a scroll at the grocery shops in towns. Pay attention before you buy to choose the right one for your grade. When you start you have the NG class, means NO GRADE. Its the level from 1-19. From 20 to 39 youre a d-grade player. So choose the scroll appropriate to your class - I assume its a NG scroll. Using it with double click will get rid of one death penalty, maybe you have to buy more depending how high your penalty is (move the mouse over the little sign to get the info).

Polearms :

Well, I know also a nice class thats lots of fun for polearms : Dwarfs ^^ - Send a well armed dwarf with a healer into the room full of mobs and he will clear it very fast :P Nice exp. But to your question. There are masteries in this game. So no one hinders you as dark elf to use a polearm but without the right skills they are kinda useless and dont deal much damage. Only certain classes as you mention will gain this skill and can make this weapon real effective. So when youre not intending to have such a weapon for roleplay or looks .. choose a class that can use it.

Last one :

You will meet several kind of people. One are very eager and try to get the maximum effect out of every move they make. Those will indeed care for matching groups for the best result e.g. in a raid or an exp hunt. Others (count me in here) take it easy. In my eyes you shall play the char you feel best with in the way you like it. As long as youre not one of the I-Level-In-2-Months-To-Top-Players (pssst .. doubt it always that tis is possible :P) enjo ythe game and what it offers. Its a long grind and for each level range there are nice things to explore. Dont spoil it for you with traveling too soon to the high level place .. keep the tension and a slow but steady walk through the levels. You will be happy to have always something you can look forward to.

And a last hint :

Since founding of the academies for the clans each larger clan is KEEN on newbies to run through their academy and earn reputation points for them. So do not hesitate to talk to clans - most likely they will be happy to have new fresh blood. And with a clan behind all is very very much easier.

So .. good gaming and enjoy your spare time here - its just a game!

To get rid of a death penalty you can buy a scroll to do that.

theres always room for a player that really knows how to play his class. i personally know an Elven Elder that wears light armor and calls herself a tank. and she is outright serious about it. well she does the job of a healer very well. so well in fact that she tends to draw aggo off of nukers.

yeah.

thats f*d up. but she dies a lot because of this. so a lot of raids that i go on she isnt welcome even though she is so skilled.

i suggest you play a class that is somewhat similar to your own personality; if youve played any other MMO and liked the Damage dealing magic user, try sorceror spellhowler or spellsinger. there are classic tank roles, as well as aoe dd roles, and a lot of other things that arent really represented in other mmo's. if the way of a warrior and his polearm are what floats your boat well we have one hella nice class for you: Destroyer. i suggest it over the warlord only because if you ever do get tired of the slow polearm, you can switch to another weapon and do just as well if not better (2handed swords).

but again, its all dependent on your style.

i suggest you do 2 things: 1 find a server you want to stick to, and 2 play a bunch of classes and find your niche. there are certain people that find their groove playing nukers, others that groove and jiive with tanks, but if poles are the way of life for you, well either try all 3 before settling down or ask a detailed comparison of classes by skill breakdown and play strategies.

About the polearming, also called AoE'ing (Area of Effect) is one of the fastest ways to level in L2, and one of the most helpful buffs when using a polearm is Vampiric Rage. Only two classes get this buff, warcryers and Shillen Elders. so you may wanna make friends w/ one if polearm is the way you wanna go(i recommend shillen elder cuz they can heal you as well). For the most part, yes not using a polearm class will gimp you, but not so much at lower lvls. I'd say around lvl 40 is when you'd really start noticing it. Oh yeah, dont leave out the dwarves, they also get polearm masteries and can make pretty good money.

About the bds and healers, i personally could never play a healer, sounds pretty boring. but hey thats me, i know a few of people that love playing there healers. the downside to the healer is that as you get higher in lvl, your going to rely on other people for exp, no soloing w/ the healer. The bd is a pretty cool support class, pretty good damage output and good offensive party buffs, and usually highly sought after for both exp and pvp parties. Doesnt really matter what class you go (stay away from temple knight one of, if not THE worst classes).
Well, i will just say Welcome to our game-server and i hope you enjoy your stay..My advice is similar to the others:
Make the char that you like more...I don't think that there are bad classes...Every class is useful at a part of the game..Enjoy the game..It has so many things to offer you...
