I need some advice for choosing my next melee character.
Currently I have a DE Assassin, but something about her doesn't feel right. I can't quite put my finger on it...could just be lack of experience with her..dunno..
I'm looking for something that can melee, that can solo and that can dish out the pain and take it. I can't rely on buffs because I end up soloing a lot.
At this point I can't say I worry too much about PvP as from what I've read, that's a lvl 60+ game. Takes awhile to get to 60 and it's more important for me to enjoy the ride, learn the game, etc.
Any constructive input would be greatly appreciated.
duel weapons are fun, blad dancers are fun to play, can solo too...SK or like DA(Shilin knight and dark avenger) can both solo, main tanks in the game, and you'll get groups for raid bosses too ( hard to level though, cause they dn't kill fast)
They don't kill fast with standard tank setup. If you go for a more DD build tho, both SK and DA can level quite fast. SK is a bit faster after level 40 due to cubics and lesser reliance on buffs to solo effectively.
It's hard to really say what you will like though. It all depends on your playstyle more than anything. If you could get groups with an SO/SE 30+ on a regular basis, then I would say go Warlord if you want to level fast and be able to kill a ton of mobs in a short period of time.

Blue--I'm still waiting for the "DA's can kill fast" thing to happen for me (haha).
As for melee--go orc heavy (only because you've already played a Dark Elf and it's fun to try different character types).
You'll find they level very fast (at low levels at least), can take a punch, and can dish out some pain.
I don't quite have my palus knight up to blade-dancer yet though I will give that a try before long. I've enjoyed the DE fighter from the first time I created him.
What the heck, try the orc. Or go DE knight class on way to BD. If you're able to twink the new toon, all of them will level to 25 pretty fast for you (even dwarf and *shudders*--human).
I suppose Gladiator is an option from human knight but leveling that toon will seem ponderous compared to some of the others (up through 20).
Good luck. If you've got character creation slots open try a couple different races.
(edit: despite "Blue's" advice, don't choose DA if you want to hurt things PvE--any of the others listed will kill more quickly and effectively. A DA is a 'defensive tank'---period."
Yanno Drakkos, that's what people said about SK when I first started mine. I still think that with a good DD build, a DA can do pretty decent damage. Probably not as much as an SK, but no other tank can compare to DPS on an SK really.
I don't use a standard tank build on my SK either tho. I use Tallum Heavy and Infernal Master/Focus for PvE. Mage and Melee Sword and shield for PvP. I guess it's more on getting DPS up as high as possible if you want to solo fast on a tank. Difficult to do, but with Might, Greater Might, and Zerk I have over 1k patk with the Inf Master.
Wow, all really good responses. All in the time it took me to make a taco salad (including salsa from scratch!).
Orc was my immediate choice until I read they have poor marksmanship. I'd rather do less damage and hit more...
Warlords look **** to me, and in fact, I think I'm gonna roll a human (yep, I'm shuddering too) and see how it goes.
Most likely, I'll end up rolling an Orc as well, just to get a taste of that accuracy issue...
I do have some other questions if ya'll don't mind answering..
Swords, Blunts and Poles..
Swords are good for single target?
Poles are good for AOE?
Blunts? Have no idea, only the image of a brick comes to mind, which in any situation can be handy ;)
So if the situation calls for it, you keep your inventory window open for fast switching or do you have a macro set up?
The Orc Tyrants and Destroyers are both solid chars, with a few significant differences.
Destroyers have fewer skills and more equipment choices.
Tyrants have more skills and fewer equipment choices.
Both have about the same power for solo with the new instant potions. As far as how they play try leveling a Fighter with a selection of weapons. For the most part, using a Zweihander or Budzygan gives you the best approximation of what a higher level Destroyer is like. For Tyrants, so much is dependent on how you use their Totems, that you simply don't get a idea how they play until past first class change, and a solid idea until after second class change. (I strongly support a 2H sword as a 'good' weapon choice for someone playing a Destroyer.)
As for 'Accuracy'. Fist weapons have +ACC like a blunt and Tyrants get a bit of an ACC boost from the Light armor mastery. Destroyers get an ACC boost with 2H weapons due to weapon mastery and they also have the Accuracy toggle skill. Thus both have a decent amount of Accuracy no matter which you choose.
Tyrant is a bit like a Bladedancer/Gladiator with lower crits/faster attacks, while the Destroyer can be more like a melee range archer if you go 2H Sword. (Slower attacks, Higher damage, big crits.)
If you like the look of warlord but also like orc i would go destroyer, my experience is once your in 60's on wl your leveling slows down cause the mobs are just abit tougher to aoe unless your in a group.
I would suggest going destroyer and use spear into 40-50's then go 2hand sword with focus sa to keep leveling speed up. if you have the se combo a fully buffed destroyer can cut thru 4xhp mobs like any normal char can regular ones. i can actually in 50's clean a room in cats faster with a 2hand crit sword then i can spear :P especially with frenzy gotta love the 4k patk :P
dwarves are excellent melee classes. they have summons, they can stun, can aoe to lvl fast, ton of hp, ton of str for dmg and u can carry a ton of items so you dont have to go to town back and forth. they also can craft items and find items that are only found by dwarves.

lol doesnt that sound good?
LOL
I'm sorry, but did I read that right? Dwarves are a good melee class? I have an A Grade Warsmith. They are the hardest class to get a party with after about level 40 without a LOT of help from your clan. They are boring to play. While Warsmith does get to summon a golem to help do damage to mobs, it costs quite a bit of adena to keep them going. In addition, unlike other summoners, WS cannot heal their summon. Unless you have +5 DEX, +4 STR, -9 CON tatts and a +STR/DEX armor set, you won't hold aggro from your golem, it will die, and you will have to use more crystals to resummon it.
Nothing against dwarves, but they are a hard class to play. Bounty Hunter has an easier time getting parties after 40 than WS does, however, neither is in nearly enough demand. They are really not all that good as a DD, they have no tank skills, and while stun is nice to have, you can't stun on a BH if you want to spoil. Yes, they can go for days on end without visiting a town for supplies. The reason for this is that while the average DD will kill 100 mobs in 1 hour, the average dwarf kills 100 mobs in 100 days. (Exageration, but very close to the truth)
If you want a class that is fun to play, has the ability to solo effectively, and gets parties on a regular basis, pick any class besides a dwarf. you will thank me for this in the future.
If, however, you like to solo, you don't mind everyone you know leveling 10 times faster than you, and you are fond of the repetitive smacking of mobs for weeks on end for two lousy percent, then pick a dwarf.
Blue, once you've "built" this DD-looking Dark Avenger, how is it supposed to be a tank when you're grouped with others and they need a tank?
If you increase patk you have to decrease Con and/or Dex. If you choose the armor sets that are made for DD's--you also loose the tank stats.
Drop the CON. CON is nothing except HP, CP, and stun resist. Your stun resist is still pretty high (and apart from stun making you temporarily unable to hate, it doesn't do much to hurt your party).
The difference in setups is really only in terms of HP and damage. And except for raid bosses and PvP there's very little benefit, even for a tank, to have a lot of HP, even in groups. Unless your healers are incredibly slow or incredibly poor at their jobs, whether you have 6k HP or 8k HP is virtually irrelevant (the only exception being the benefit gained by %heal from a bishop).
And nothing says you can't have more than one set of armor; one that boosts damage and one that boosts shield defense rate.
At the end of the day, haven't you built a poor excuse for a DD that isn't as good of a tank as it could be?
What would be the point of diminishing a good tank to create a poor DD?
Because there truly aren't many places in the game where the size of your tank's HP pool matters. Raid bosses and PvP are pretty much it (although in PvP the damage spec may be better anyhow). And the DA is not a poor DD, especially with buffs. With prophet or warcryer buffs, like you should have in any decent group, the DA can outdamage an equivalent level summoner, and summoners are decent melee DDs.
Even in groups, the damage setup will almost always be superior to the soak setup, because unless you're routinely letting your tank fall down to below 30% HP, the additional 30% boost to his HP pool isn't doing anything for you. +5 STR -5 CON on a DA actually makes them better at tanking in most places because 1. they get more HP back from VR, 2. the monsters die faster so deal less total damage, 3. the additional damage makes the tank keep hate for longer so less MP used.
