Hey, i just want to ask anyone out there who knows their fighting, especially the techniques, as to what technique is really best suited to self defense. i am 16, 6'4, and 180 pounds. i dont have many interests and as you can see i am tall but weak. i think i can hope to kill 2 birds with one stone here and get a hobbie and build some muscle as well. any help is apprieciated.
Try Kung-Fu or TaeKwonDo...really good excersise in both of em...u might not build muscle, but u surely are gonna learn how to use ur body when necessary...strength is not in the muscles size...it's learning how to use your muscles better and correctly :)
as they say, "best defense is a good offense." i think i can see where you're going with this, and i would echo one of the other posters to say find a good kung fu studio in your area. the movements are extremely fluid, and as you go through your katas and practice the techniques you'll learn, you'll find yourself building up some good lean muscle mass. they'll teach you alot about evading strikes, while using the momentum of the other guy to your best advantage. keep in mind that if you are trained in a martial art that you are then considered a deadly weapon, so you'll have to make sure to use the other guy's oafishness to the fullest extent possible.
he just tripped and fell into my fist, i swear! :p
to the best of my knowledge Kung-Fu or TaeKwonDo are more offensive.
For defense (where muscle strength is less important) you might wanna look into one of the many forms of jujitsu, or maybe aikido. Neither of these require a great deal of strength because they either use leverage (jujitsu) or the oponents movement (aikido) to do the "damage"
A friend of mine used to own a dojo. He and his training partner specialized in a form of fighting (don't remember what he called it) but it was mostly dirty-street fighting. That's what I'd look into.
Most martial arts are specialized in different areas, so depending on what you choose you get to be good at different things. Most martial arts have also evolved from beeing a way to teach how you fight to turn into a way of giving you a better self esteem and teaching you techniques through repetition.
If you want to learn how to fight you should go train boxing or shoot fighting, ergo sports that will let you get hurt and actually hurt someone (in a sensible way of course, its just training). If you want to learn self defense you should go the way most policemen go by learning krav maga or brazilian judo (ergo very heavy duty martial arts that go deep into both fighting and holding people down). If you want to do something that just helps you build muscles and is fun, you could train Capoeira or other sports that are more into training the body and dooing fun stuff than to teach you how to fight.
You have the body of a noob and you need to level up. The only way to level is get out there and grind. I recommend doing the repeatable weight room quest which you can get from your PE instructor. Also upgrade your items. You will level five times as faster if you equip this item:
Put it on when you get up and don't take it off until you go to bed. Wear it under your clothes and if you get into a fight your opponent's fist will melt if they strike your torso. After a month when you do take it off it will feel like you can fly.
lots of replies heh. i think i will buy that vest, and i am looking into jujitsu, krav magah, and kung fu. all three of those are offered at a martial arts place near me, so im looking good. thanks for the info.

no... Judo.
No matter what fancy kicks, punches or whatever else you might see with other martial arts, eventually fights end up on the ground. It is the person who can control their opponent's movements who wins.
Look at all the ultimate fighting championships. The people who tend to win have training in Judo and wrestling.
yeah, and i still have a few more years to grow :) being tall rools
Wait until you sit in a coach on a really long journey. The same short person that has been glowering at you for years as you effortlessly reached high shelves will sit down next to you, stretch luxuriously and say something about how roomy it is - while you try to figure out where to put your knees.

Running away.
The second best would be striking while the other person is still trying to show ape-like "I'm meaner than you" postures and not stopping until the other person stops moving. Preferably with something - anything - which is both harder than flesh and bone and allows you to strike at a distance.
That's the basics. Techniques are just refinements, but nothing beats (haha, a pun!) a good amount of practice in good old English bootin'.
