In random the picked up items go to random person. You may get something 3 times in a row, or not get something few times in a row as well. By turn a first picked up item goes go party leader, next to the guy invite first, then second invited and so on.
Persoonaly I dont like "by turn" becouse of it being able to make patterns, or at least feels like I miss all the better stuff. And the "by turn" can be manipulateds.
Random parties uses L2's random number generator to decide who gets each item as it's picked up. By turn of course just gives items to each party member in turn.
A common scam to be aware of is people telling you they will give you 50 mil if you just drop your weapon and pick it up. They invite you to party and when you drop it and pick it up they are a long distance from you. Far enough so you are sure you can pick up before they cross the distance and try and grab your weapon. But close enough that they have a very good chance of getting your weapon even if you are the one picking it up because of loot by turn. Don't fall for this one folks.

That's a pretty stupid version of inviting to party, asking you if your weapon lays down or sticks in the ground when you drop it, and when you try it chances are on pick up it goes to them.

If you are in a group of actual friends/clanmates it probably doesn't matter which set-up is in place. Real playing companions tend to think of others besides themselves.
If it's a 'pickup' group and you are with strangers you have to decide how important the drops are to you. Generally at lower levels the raid bosses, for instance, won't drop anything that will make you rich anyway--so missing out on something probably won't kill you.
Personally, I like the even-handedness of by-turn in parties of strangers. If it appears they are manipulating that then leave the group.
I can't recall a single instance in 11 months of being partied where 'random' delivered anything to me at all. If I'm invited to party in 'random' set-ups I usually just decline unless it's clanmates, allies, or folks I've played with many times.
It only takes a few times seeing 3 of 4 drops go to one person and the other drop going to someone else before you do the math that as the 5th person in the list 'by turn' you would have gotten something a couple of times.
Up to you--as many people will post saying they will only do 'random'.
Basically it's probably not worth too much thought. Don't expect ANY drops and you'll always be pleasantly surprised if you get one.
Remember too--in 'random' you can NEVER get a drop. It doesn't go in a cycle. In a 6 person party, the first 3 drops can go to player #1, one other drop go to player #3. Next mobs drop 5 things picked up----4 of those go to player #2 and the other drop goes to player #1 again. Next mobs drop 6 items, 2 go to player #1 again, 3 to player #3, 1 to player #2. If you're player #5 in this group you get zippo!
in the long run normal drops will get sprea dout (sealstones, mats, keymats) if you are talking about DROPS, like armors and weapons, I dont se a problem. do you usualy get more then 0-1 drop / group? in one day? I dont >.<
