Out of curiousity, does the use of ventrillo decrease performance in any way? I have a headset, with a mic, and have yet to use ventrillo, I dunno whether or not I'm scared to set it up or just don't know how to. I'm used to games like counter strike where you simply plug in your mic and you're good to talk. Will someone be specific with me, because to be frank I'm kinda dumb when it comes to setting technical stuff up. I'll admit that. lol Thanks guys.
does it change gameplay at all? make the game funner, or worse in any way?
Depends on who you're on vent with :p
It's very helpful to be on vent with people youre in party with, and generally just to talk to your clan/ally mates.
I never have problems, performance wise, using vent while I play, but there are some people who completely lag out in game if they are connected to vent. Depends on your computer/internet connection.
so, it sounds like its a good thing. I run a 3.2 with a cable modem and 1g of ram so I think I should be fine right? ...so how do I set up ventrillo to work with my mic and run on lineage 2. how do I find stuff like the server name and such?
Ventrilo is not one big public place you can just log on to and find random people to talk to (though I know of one vent that comes close :p). You have to have the info for a specific vent to use it.
If you have dial-up it makes a very severe difference. We had a few players running dial-up, and often they had horrible lag with Ventrilo operating. Teamspeak is somewhat more forgiving, though you can configure Ventrilo to use lower bandwidth codecs.
Vent's nice to be able to chat while doing other things, and its vital in hectic PvP or FoDs, and very useful in organizing large events. Its not for everyone though.
A funny vent can make a mediochre party good. :p But a boring vent is... well, a boring vent.

I use vent on my second pc while playing L2. Although I have used it on my main one as well.
I have never experienced any decrease of game play with vent running in the background.
I have been told that vent is not a hog on the machine as TS was/is...but I am not sure on that one.
My clan pretty much refuses to use chat programs of any kind. Just our preference really. We have gotten to the point that in tight situations we know what everyone is going to do so we have no need to even type out orders. When we were active in seiges we used to have one person listen in to the seige Vent channel to relay what was happening to the rest of the clan though. I would say in Seiges fast communication is vital.
In answer to Elrohir's question....Vent is fun when listening to the various clan leaders of a seige bark contradictory orders and sow confusion like a farmer planting seeds who is a couple weeks late in the season. Mad, frantic, and confused, with the troops often running in all directions at once. I never laughed quite so hard.
I think it probably could be fun depending on the circumstances. But my experience has been mixed. Partly because the sound quality is horrible, there are differences in volume between people, people cut out and in etc.
For me it just ruins any immersive quality of the game. If you are going to be doing a lot of pvp then it seems that it is a must. When we would sign in to a vent server I would usually just listen for important info. But sometimes there wouldn't be important info and it was just chatting.
I get enough of that when I ride in the car with my mother. :)

There is that. I find myself getting more distracted trying to listen to what someone might be saying; then hearing 10 people talking over each other. Hell, it's easier to just read chat. I find it more of a distraction than a benefit. I'd rather listen to music anyway...
With the latest version you can adjust each individual user's volume. I'd be bored out of my mind if I didn't have my clannies to listen to while I'm out xping everynight.
Heck, if I didn't have vent, the conversation about the one armed crack addict never would have happened!!
does it change gameplay at all? make the game funner, or worse in any way? how do I set it up if I'm interested?
It really depends on quite a few factors, especially the quality of the equipment. If you have my setup, everyone sounds like a 12 year old teenage boy going through puberty, which makes the experience anything but enjoyable.
Lineage without vent is boring. I love having people to talk to while playing, and the conversations can be quite weird and fun. Even more fun when someone is so drunk they dont rememer what they did the night before on vent.
It's also a requirement, nothing worse than having 1 or 2 people at a raid or siege without vent, we just can't have it. One person spamming ally chat with "where do I go???" when they could have listened to vent is too annoying for words.
im a bit on the shy side so i tend to avoid vent
but the second there is pvp or a raid i jump on straight away
just a huge tactical advantage to be able to press a button and be instantly heard by your whole alli
Most shy people just listen though, that's acceptable. If you can't even get on to listen, unless there is a good reason like an amazingly bad connection.. then people get a little susp.

They do?
I've never had anyone suspicious of me not being on Vent. I just say it ruins the immersion for me and the pretty much handles it.
I always stick to the party leader and assist. The only time I don't do that is when everyone just takes off on their own accord in which case I either find a leader to stick to or I put myself on the wall and take people out who can't pay admission. ;)
I loved the look of Eve and it has an interesting way of leveling your skills. But the beginning stuff was rather boring to me so I gave it up after the free trial I had was done.
Thats one of the best ideas I've seen in a long time. I have an eve account, but mining is just too tiresome and boring, you almost need another game to be playing while your out doing stuff like mining...good idea!
