Mylene Farmer

I thought i could make you discover one of the greatest French singer of all time, namely Mylene Farmer !
Her shows are about as great as Michael Jackson's ones (yes i've been to a lot of MJ shows too :p), they're sold out one year in advance, the music is excellent, the lyrics are very deep and interesting (although most of you wont be able to understand them unfortunately), her videos are really mini-movies, and moreover she's gorgeous !!! :o
Just take a look here and let me know what you think :

Desenchantee must have been fairly popular in Germany - I hear it on the radio quite a bit. :p
i hate farmers but this guy is ok ^^
*gal

She's a lady, and she looks good, might I add! IMO at least. :D
Can I ask a serious question? Why do people judge musicians on their looks? Do pretty people play guitar better or something? I've never understood that...
I won't listen to someone's music because I think they look good - but why is it so horrible to remark on it? I get the same question from other people at university. Saying 'she looks very good' isn't equal to 'I like her music' - it's a bit of an added bonus.

It's like people saying 'wowzors they write their own music'. It has nothing to do with their ability as a singer (and in fact, I'd assume that interpreting someone else's music is harder than interpreting your own). The same for playing an instrument.

Nonetheless, that's a 'nice added bonus' - not to them as a singer, but as an entertainer.

it's a bit of an added bonus.

In what way, shape or form? Honestly, when I'm driving down the road listening to the radio, how can the performers looks possibly make a difference?

Case in point, I have a co-worker that listens to nothing but Country music. Personally, I think that 99% of Country music is pure crap (and he knows this). Anyway, he asked me if I've listened to any of (insert female country singer)'s music. I, of course, say, "no." He replies, "well, you should. She's hot!"

Makes absolutely no sense to me. Never has, never will. And I've been buying music since the early '70s.
*sarcasm on* Because every time you hear a song you immediately immagine yourself in bed with them! that is why its an added bonus! *sarcasm off*

Oh and just wanted to add: Britney spears is not a better entertainer than ozzy osbourne, and i think we can all agree she looks a hell of alot better than he does.

As I said - I won't listen to something because they look good, it's just nice that they look good, in a 'nice coincidence' sort of way.

Compare to writing your own music/playing one of the instruments yourself/singing live. None of these hold any sway over the actual music's sound (except that a live recorded sound is often more beautiful than a studio-wrangled one, but then it's better because it sounds better, not because it's live). All of these are commonly attributes which people think somehow elevates music.

I personally go by what I enjoy the sound of exclusively as far as listening is concerned, but, someone looking good is still an added bonus - just as someone singing live, writing their own music, or playing an instrument is. It's utterly unrelated, but nice.

A bit like 'she's a good healer - and makes for great company in groups'. Nobody becomes a better healer because they're chatty, it's still nice.

You and I differ on this then. Looks have zero effect on how much I enjoy someone's performance. None.

You're comparing tangible qualities. Like I said, how can I judge someone's looks from the radio?

I still don't get this. How does their looks having any effect whatsoever?

A bit like 'she's a good healer - and makes for great company in groups'. Nobody becomes a better healer because they're chatty, it's still nice.

No, it's like someone saying "You know that healer you partied with last month? They're really great conversationalists." And then you say, "Wow, because you told me that, I think I enjoyed partying with them that much more now."

You're comparing tangible qualities. Like I said, how can I judge someone's looks from the radio?

How can you judge if it's their own song, or their own playing or someone else's, on the radio?

Their looks don't have any effect as far as music selection is concerned. I'm not sure what you're trying to get at.

If you're asking if I would listen to someone's music because they're hot, or avoid it because they're not, I've already answered a clear 'no' - I don't even know what the interpreters of my favourite music look like, but I bet a fair number of them are old men.

If you're looking for a 'I like his/her music, he's hot' person, you're in the wrong spot - and your parallel makes no sense to me. My parallel is indeed just how I said.

Depends upon how knowledgeable about music you happen to be. *If* I know, I can judge. If I don't, of course I cannot. I never used whether or not the music was original as a basis of comparison, however, you did.

Just my original question... What is the bonus of a musician being attractive? Nothing more, nothing less.

That was never my question. You said there was a bonus to a musician being attractive.

Yours made no sense to me either, I'm afraid.
I'm not sure what's not to understand - don't you like it when an electrical appliance not only work well but also looks good?

That's what it is - a nice added bonus.

Couldn't care less, really. Then again, every time you use the toaster, you get to see it. How does that apply to music you hear on the radio?
I don't only listen to music on the radio - I also watch clips quite a bit, which is where it's an added bonus.

As I said. As far as listening goes, I don't care about anything except whether or not I like the sound.
Woah, i leave this topic for one day and now it has nothing to do with Mylene Farmer anymore
(btw i agree with Maline, the look is indeed an added bonus, i never really liked Britney Spear's music but i got all of her videos on DVD :p)

Just my original question... What is the bonus of a musician being attractive?

More people come to their concerts, which make them significantly more money than the CD sales.

I couldn't care less, but that's how this business works.

That is a bonus to the performer. Not necessarily a bonus to the listener.

Jeeze, sounds like people would rather see their favorite music lipsynced by models.
Some do - that's how quite a few modern 'artists' prosper.

But the people you are talking here aren't like that, and the implication is getting annoying. If I watch a video, I prefer it look pleasant - and nowadays, music and videos are often quite connected (as in this thread, for example - this was about Farmer's music in the context of her videos, not as a stand-alone). Naturally, if I watch a music video, I'd like it to look and sound good.

You aren't like that but want good looking people in the videos. Got it.
You can save yourself your sarcasm - I'm seriously trying to explain a concept that's really not very difficult at all, and I don't appreciate you cloaking your preconception in curiousity in order to mock me. Thanks!
Explain away then. I haven't seen it.

Some people prefer style over substance; like the OP who owns Britney's videos but doesn't like the music. Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but it's just not me.
The visuals are the substance of the video - that's what I'm trying to tell you this entire time. A music video isn't just about the music, it's a mixed medium, in which both have to be good. Plenty of people have videos of people who look really horrid but make really good music - that's the same thing. It's style over substance if you're only looking at the visuals (because then the audio becomes style).

In fact, however, if you want to sit down and appreciate a mixed medium like a comic book, a person, or, well, a music video, you should look at it thoroughly.

As pointed out, as far as listening is concerned, I chose exclusively by the sound, and, rarely, the lyrics. However, if I'm sitting down to watch clips, they must not only sound but also look good - after all, why on earth would I want to look at a clip that does not look good?

To my experience of music, 'looks good' is an added bonus, because I usually wind up seeing clips sooner or later - just like to some others, the ability to perform live (which is equally irrelevant to the music itself) is that 'added bonus'.

I would personally not watch a video just for the sound, nor just for the visuals. It's a mixed medium, so naturally, it has to be both good looking and good sounding.

If you will, compare it to comics - some people think that good writing saves bad art, but I'd disagree. Good writing can make a bad comic mediochre, just like good art can make bad writing a bit less horrible, but for a comic (or any other mixed medium) to work, you have to have both.

Because music isn't forcibly a mixed medium, but only becomes one if the artist actually has good visuals to offer, the 'looking good' moves from 'necessary requirement' to 'a nice added bonus'.
I guess I'm weird (but we all knew that). I would much rather see a performance video of the actual musicians playing the song. Personally, I'm much more interested in how they did it (even though I'm not a musician); especially since I prefer to listen to complicated music. I have no interest in some director's interpretation of what the song is about.

Edit: Case in point (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c29PI3mDnwY). My kind of video!
That's just plain a different genre.

I do enjoy both kinds.

What you have there, however, is hardly a performance video in my mind - too much with the angles to really count as such. :p

That's just plain a different genre.

Why would genre matter? I want to see the musicians perform in any genre...

It is a performance video, though. Maybe done up a bit much but still a performance video, 100%.

Here's an example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tCUeAAK9fg) of a conceptual performance video (I skipped a class to see the premier of this one, back in '84 I think...). I still prefer pure performance, however. Even if the musicians aren't particularly "photogenic"...

Sir E., your musical tastes brings me back to High School and Art Class.

Because you were high in both??

What can I say? I prefer progressive rock.

Aw man, you would have loved our recent "Prog Rock" night.

Some friends of mine got together, hung out, drank really good beer and just listened to all sorts of Prog Rock all night.

Naw, not really a "get high" guy. My imagination is messed up enough without pushing it through the looking glass.

Also, people might be interested to know that there are music videos for all sorts of music. Even some classical music videos. They become less about the light show and more about the player.

I've always been the type to realize "it takes all kinds".

Anyone for listening to "Carlo Gesualdo"? He was nutty... I think he put a spear through his wife. :(

I think he put a spear through his wife.

You've got my attention... :p

I understand the different tastes. I just never understood the people (going back to my original question) that say "You should listen to ______, she's hot looking!" It's a complete non sequitur. To me, it sounds just like "You should taste this vanilla ice cream, my cat has fleas!"
Not the genre of the music... the genre of a video! You can't compare what is essentially a documentary (performance vid) to what is essentially entertainment (MV). Or well, you can. It just won't make much sense, as they're both trying to do very different things.
I can compare which I prefer (which I've done). To me, a performance video is far more entertaining. But then I like to watch musicians; not people that have no talent and are only known for their looks.
If you're watching them, what odes it matter how well they can play?

Now you're doing the same thing you're accusing others of - that's 'all style, no substance'.

PS: Talent deserves no respect. Skill does.

If you're watching them, what odes it matter how well they can play?

Because I watch to see how they did something. How did they make that guitar sound that way? How did they get the sound of 5 instruments from 3 people?

I don't watch to see which outfit Britney is wearing for a song.

I don't watch to see which outfit Britney is wearing for a song.

I do (moreover if it's a short outfit) :p
The thing is, i really dont see myself getting interested in a musician who looks horrible, be it male or female. He/she might make excellent music, if i dont find him/her "attractive" in some sort of way (i'm not saying "beautiful"), i wont get interested... For me, the looks is as important as the music (hey, i was always -and still am- into KISS and Mötley Crüe !!! :D)

For me, the looks is as important as the music

And this is something that I simply will never understand. Good topic though!

PS: Talent deserves no respect. Skill does.

Dont those 2 go hand in hand? Im just confused on that statement. I have been known to play 2 keyboards at one time. Am I talented or skilled?

I didn't get it either. I wonder if she means "learned" (skill) versus "inherited" (talent).
Yeah, skill is what grows from effort, talent is something that just happens to you. Of course, some degree of talent is needed to get to certain levels of skill - but I respect someone who worked hard to play sorta well over someone to whom playing well comes naturally.

Because I watch to see how they did something. How did they make that guitar sound that way? How did they get the sound of 5 instruments from 3 people?

You must be talking about a different kind of video than the one you linked, then. :p

True. Some guitar and bass players (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNZru4JG_Uo) play synth with their feet.

Welcome to the official Elro and Maline debate thread.

Well, he was classically trained. That is Rick Wakeman, by the way. Among other things, he was the keyboard player for Yes for quite a while.
I have no training. I cant even read music. I push buttons till it sounds good. :p
