This is my first character and before I started the game I liked the look of the Dark Elf in the C5 movie (the dual wielding one fighting the good Elf). Thats what I wanted to play like, but apparently theres not really a class like that in game, she fights like an Assassin but dual-wields like a Bladedancer.
So, should I be a Bladedancer or an Assassin?
I get the feeling that Assassin is the most like what I want, just without the dual wield ability. Just to make sure about this choice, I have a few quick questions about BDs (the other class Im considering) that I hope some kind soul will answer for me. :)
1. Can BD's do a good amount of damage? Ive read forums that make BDs sound quite weak compared to the other classes.
2. Can BD's solo? I've read posts where BD's say they wish they had more damage output because soloing is hard for them.
3. Can BD's kill people one on one in PvP or are they the class that is easiest to kill / least feared? One BD in a post somewhere said he would settle for making the enemy healer change target to him in PvP (as if he couldnt do a lot else).
4. Is a BD in groups only really a support class that dances or is it considered an important damage dealer? What would be my role in a group if I went BD?
1. BD do really good damage but you are still a support class.
2. They solo pretty good so with your dances you can get decent exp.
3. In 1v1 BD have a pretty good chance against many classes. They are supposed to beat archers and other Meeles they can beat too. Only problem would be nukers and summoners.
4. A BD is a dd in groups but you are invited for your dances which make you and the rest of the party better. EVERY party wants a bd.

What he said!
The BD is the ultimate party animal in this game. You have dances for everyone once you pass level 58, and it gets better as you go. I have a 66 BD and I can tell you that I never have trouble getting a party. I can hold my own against several classes at the same level in PvP, but BD's are not 1v1 animals by any sense of the term.
Dagger/assassin are **** good DD's, but they do have their drawbacks as do all the classes really. If you come up against the wrong class in pvp you're toast, but the same goes for all the classes. We each have our pro's and con's. If you like to party...Go BD....if you want to be a killer....Go Dagger/Assassin.
In the end.......both choices are good ones. I went with the BD and never regreted it for a minute.
BD is a great class...and if you want to switch from melee support, get a bow, with your dances and a bow, you deal alot of damage.
and 55 you get arrest (which places opponent in hold status) so if you're fighting any thing other than a range class you'll win (that is if you have a bow)
I even have one of the better classes for PVP in my fold.
But ask me which character I like playing the most. Go ahead, ask me...
You guessed it. The BD. Whether solo or group, the BD has coolness factor that the other characters lack. To me, that is the key. Go with the class that makes your chest swell whenever you roll them out. The grind won't change, but at least it will be more enjoyable playing a character that you like playing.

They are quite decent in damage -- but their main benefit is that they boost the damage of everyone they party with.
2. Can BD's solo? I've read posts where BD's say they wish they had more damage output because soloing is hard for them.
They can solo better than assassins. In this game there are few classes that can solo well. A BD is borderline -- they can solo but it's not as easy as for the few actual solo classes. Assassins aren't all that good at soloing, like virtually all melee classes.

There's a lot of different kinds of PvP. Group v. Group, 1 v. 1 with full buffs, 1 v. 1 with self-buffs only, etc. 1 v. 1 they're going to beat healers, certainly, maybe not too much else. Group v. Group they're an incredibly vital part of the process; the amount of extra damage their dances add to a well-made group is pretty staggering.
4. Is a BD in groups only really a support class that dances or is it considered an important damage dealer? What would be my role in a group if I went BD?
Dances are the most important, but the DD ability is average so you're certainly going to be meleeing as well as dancing.
Assassins aren't all that good at soloing, like virtually all melee classes.
Pre- C5, I would say this is true. But now that pots and herbs drop from mobs, soloing is much more viable for all classes.
The last two days I left my buffbot back in the village, because I didn't really need the buffs. The grave preds, trees and doom-types dropped pots and herbs often enough to keep me dancing and slaying (although I did miss the security blanket of VR). It all depends on where you hunt, I guess.
I have soloed most classes, and they are all more or less good at it. BDs are one of the better classes. I managed to solo in catas (with SE buffs) untill lvl62, could have continued but I rerolled.
BDs DO good damage, realy, but they are fragile, and not realy that good in 1vs1 PvP. :/

Ah, entirely possible. I haven't XPd with any character apart from my Phantom Summoner since C5 came out, and I could always solo well. Of course the herbs were a nice help.

If I might ask, which ones?
what catas I soloed? buffs I had, or what classes I rerolled? o.O
1. soloed medusa rooms in apostate, but 1st room in witches is almost easier I belive, and gives blanks.
2. lvl58 SE buffs. sometimes I recharged/healed myself.
3. rerolled SPS, then rerolled again, a TH+PP, now doing a warlock alt.
