Ok i've been playing for almost a year now and i still dont get it : how do you work your way around with those things ?
Do you kill them ?
Do you open them ?
How ?
If it was a dropped kye, get into melee range of the chest. double-click on the key in your inventory. If you mean keys of thief, if you're a rogue, you use the unlock skill with the chest targetted.
I think one of the classes has a skill that can open them too ....
ie. theif classes. I'm not sure about probabilities though of opening a chest with dropped keys and opening a chest with the 'unlock' skill. May be rewards are better with 'unlock'.
I have not tried unlock with my rogue yet. Theif keys have to be bought from NPC stores :(
if you use a mob dropped key, just single click on the chest and then double click the key in your inventory. Otherwise, just attack all the chests you see. With a key you will get good adena drops and other stuff too. Like enchant scrolls. If you attack the chest, you can still get drops but the chance is significantly lower.
Oh ok i see now !
I'll try with the Key then :p
(and the grade of the keys means something like you need a lv3 key to open lv30ish Treasure Chest ?)
(hm... and what about "Deluxe" keys, does this also mean something ?)

Well I was talking about deluxe keys yes...and idd a lvl 3 will opene 30ish chests.

Hmm.. Yes.. But I work it a bit differently. You only want to use a key on a chest that isn't a mimic (the type of chest that attacks you.) You can tell by hitting the chest (Actually dwarves have an advantage here, you can just spoil the chest) If it was a real chest, it just disappears. Mimics attack (for dwarves, in an 'activated' state.)
If it attacked, kill it for the drops (and sweep it.) If it disappeared, wait for it to respawn, then use the key. Mimics respawn as mimics, chests respawn as chests.
Be aware that some chests do not open, even with the key, but simply disappear.

this is crazy advice.
True, but you will lose the reword that it could hold by trying to test the box for mimic status.
PW, AW, TH all get the unlock skill which allow them to use 'key of thief' to unlock chest (starting from lvl 20+). How ever, the cost of the key to the reward is really bad, you will lose more money trying, then you will gain.
In C5 NCsoft added 'summon treasure chest key' skill, I know TH has it not sure about the other 2 classes. but I'm not sure how good this is. Haven't heard anything about it.
Honestly It's best to save your SP and not learn unlock.
I think the higher grade give higher rewards but I've never heard they give anything other than adena, mats or scrolls.
Best thing I ever got from a chest was an enchant armor A (in TOI). But that doesn't mean you can't get something better of course. This is just one person's experience :)
Watching those little boxes bouncing along behind whoever they are trying to kill cracks me up everytime. Next to Elpys they have to be the most unfrightening mobs there are.

There are treasure chests and then there are mimics.
As a mob, the mimic should be capable of dropping everything from mats to complete weapons and armor. I once got a Plate helmet from a Mimic in Heine.
But the treasure chests are another story. I usually collect the chest keys and just before leveling I'll run around opening them. I have received only adena and scrolls from the chests so far. I'm holding out hope that one day I'll open a chest and get something really worthy of the word "Treasure." But I guess if they are going to leave them in plain sight, I guess we shouldn't expect too much.

ah but I've never been killed by an Elpy. Those treasure chest mimics make up for there unfrightening appearence with their atk power. I feel like such an *** running away from it. :D

Plus... it is noisy as hell, snapping and snarling at your heels. My newbie archer shot one sitting next to a party-boss group near Preacher Sla back in the days when the chests exploded for high damage if you shot one. I wanted it to explode and take out the party, but it was a mimic and chased me halfway to Florin.
