.. but before I log in I was hoping someone could help me on a couple of points. I'm planning on being a Human/Mystic, going down the path of Necromancer. Will this make it hard for me to find groups? If I go Cleric is it easy to find groups? Basically, what classes are most group sought? (I play MMOs to be in groups, not to solo :))
Also, as an English only speaker is there any particular server(s) I should pick or avoid if I want to only see communications in this language?
That being said: don't let the newbie towns get you down, it gets better once you get to 20+
anyway, I would say that a Prophet is the most sought after for groups (dunno for sure, cause i play a silver ranger..) as for language issues: if you want english, stay away from the euro servers :p all the others are pretty good as far as i can tell, but you should come join me on Bartz :D
All the servers have a fair share of English speaking folk. Teon and Franz are both considered Euro servers though as they are setup for European time zones. Some clans are looking for specific classes and others (like the one I am in) are looking for people they can get along with regardless of class.
Thanks for the replies guys. I enjoy playing casters mostly, so anything off of mystic should be fine :) But more over, I enjoy being in groups.
I just don't want to play Necro, then find I'm useless in boss fights (and hence not invited) due to something daft like my pets cause aggro on incorrect targets.. or I can't summon any pet at all due to their being no corpses. Something daft like that.

cheers!
there are several sought-after classes used PRIMARILY in groups, and there are a handful of other classes that can survive solo should a group not be available.
that being said, consider the Warcrier, Overlord, Elven Elder, Prophet, Bishop, Shillien Elder, Swordsinger, Bladedancer all to be assist type players that normally play in grous all invaulable in specific situations and to specific degrees.
in a big clan doing a siege, Warcriers and Overlords are very valuable as they can buff entire parties or alliances using a single spell. small groups just looking for a healer are suited for Elven Elder, Shillien Elder, Bishop and sometimes Prophet. big raids requiring heavy Damage and defence rely on Prophets and Blade dancers and Swordsingers to multiply buffs and make stats go through the roof; thats not to say the other classes do not do any of these functions, but some are just better than others.
no matter what you pick, have fun doing whatever you like to do, and if i may interject a server choice i would say Lionna, Devianne or Gustin may be the servers for you.
Don't worry about not being able to summon; even if you don't see a lot of dead bodies, you'll have at least two summons available before you hit 40, Kat the Cat and Mew the Cat.
If you're interested in buffing I suggest WC (Orc war cryer), having played a prophet to 6x and seeing the WCs get just about every good thing we get along with VR (SE buff) over the updates, I'd choose WC if I had to pick another buffer (Prophets need more <3). If you prefer support DD, I sugest BD/SWS (not as much of a dd but still saught after).
Necro is a very fun class. Good in raids (CDL usually) and great in pvp. But... hard to get groups unless 1. You find a mage/nuker party. 2. You find a summoner party. Or 3. are in a small DD party and are willing to summon (cost a lot). Necro has crowd control, nukes, and summon all diff play styles. I (Soultaker) have played mostly solo because it's faster that way and hard to get parties now due to the sleep nerf, but can get parties if I want. Just slower exp then soloing, and cost alot if I summon. We can duo with buffers. We can trio. Whatever you desire that day. Main drawback to necros is we can cost A LOT to lvl, but on the flip side if you CDL (curse death link) you can make good money at higher lvls.
If you prefer healing. Bishops are always wanted in clans. EEs are good too. I would not sugest SEs as a main class these days. I no longer play mine as a main, been gimped too much.
Other "DD" type classes are always wanted in groups. I as others have said, suggest you play something that is appealing to you, and looks like you would enjoy sticking with it. The grind goes away if you're having fun. =)
PS. Once you find a good group of people (clan) getting parties shouldn't be an issue. Regardless of your class choice. Welcome to the game.

this sounds to me like you might want to play a real summoner. warlock, phantom summoner, elemental summoner. look closely at the skills, some of them have buffs/cubics that help a whole party.
its not that necro cant party its just that its better for you to solo
it cost about double what any other mage spends to nuke so any party you go in you will be loseing cash (unless its a necro duo)
you could play debuffer but its generally not needed
you want a rare class go tk (dont)
TK is getting a hate cubic in Interlude. Considering the #1 reason for having a knight is to maintain hate on Raid Bosses and to take the damage the best, TK elf also has the highest dex potential giving you best shield defence rate.
Alone id say necromancer has the best DD of all classes considering they still get nukes and a summon. Archers, daggers, tyrant can probably match that DD once they they get all the lovely buffs/songs stacked. +crit rate/+crit power is crazy. As for groups/raids necro is just as good or better than any pure nuker considering the have B2M for excellent mp mamagement.
Necromancer is also 1 of the top candidates for best PVP class.
In most races, the healer and buffer are the same class. Humans are the exception, where after level 40 Prophets get only buff skills and Bishops get only heal/ressurect skills. Also, for each race, they get some buffs that other races don't, but they also miss out on some buffs that other races get. A Bishop is the one healer/buffer type that I see very rarely. Anything else I could say has already been said by the others. Well, one more thing. If you go the buffer/hearler route, you will probably find that large groups are probably best supported by a mix of the different races of healer/buffer.
As far as nukers, it seems to me that the Dark Elf Spellhowler is the most powerful, and a Necromancer is the 2nd most powerful. But, Sorcerers and LE nukers can probably also be fun to play, just not as uber as the Spellhowlers and Necromancers.
if you want a rare race/class go orc or light elf, if you must have a mystic i would suggest avoiding summoner classes and buffing classes (SE and prophet) not because thier broken! because summoners cost a ton to level and its no fun being extra-poor when its your first, and most players consider SE's and prophets as buffbot classes... when you get to higher levels that makes it hard to find a group with those 2 as a lot of people will be tugging around second accounts with them. if those problems dont concern you give it a try anyway! as long as you know what to expect.
straight out nuking classes and healing classes SH, sorc, SpS, EE, bishop are all okay choices for a first... the first 3 nukers will probably end up mostly soloing whereas the healing ones are group dependant. problem with group dependant classes is they have a really hard time getting levels when there arent any groups around. it can be done, its just tough.
the 2 orc mystics might be best choice for you :P warcryer can buff everyone in thier group at once, are capable of solo when its needed, and are relatively desireable in almost any group. overlords can buff an entire clan or alliance at once if thier close enough! but, they dont do so wonderful in groups outside thier clan/ally. you really do need a good supportive clan to get anywhere on an OL.
if you wanna stick to your human, a bishop or prophet will get more groups than anything else, and a bishop probably moreso than a prophet later on in levels
