Hey guys.
Im looking for a fun melee class to play. One that is decent in pvp and that is welcome in parties. Any suggestions ??
I was thinking SK but I think I would get sick of the damage I would do. Event tho their the strongest tank their not so strong r they ?
destroyer. or tyrant. but im biased to orcs ^^
edit: to explain, there is a difference between "tank" and "tanking". daggers and even healers can tank effectively, if they know what they are doing. i have seen tyrants capable of tanking in small parties up to level 78, and i have a destroyer that has never had a problem tanking, even in the nude. there is one significant thing that seperates tank-like from official tank. the hate skills. hate skills allow you to tank for raids, and can be fun in PvP. other classes to consider: gladiator, BD, PW, SwS.
Well, depends on what you want, there a good number of fun mellee classes.
Of the hybrid classes;
The most commonly played are Bladedancers, Destroyers, and Gladiators, in that order.
If you want to be slightly more uniqie, I would reccomend a Temple Knight, or SwordSinger, as they Elven classes are the least common (non mages).
But everything has something to offer, just look at the races, classes, and skills section of this aite for more info on the class that is closest to your style, and above all,
Id recomment a dagger(TH). +crit rate/+crit power is the best ever. Better than Tyrants massive atk haste cuz it just turns out being soulshot spammer when TH hits so hard with a fast weapon on a crit. Also i just like the idea of having a group of daggers in a seige, with at least 1 having the trick skill that makes your oppnent turn his back then you all backstab him together and totoally bypass the CP bar.
But if you want to have FUN id play a Destroyer. Frenzy is so much fun to use, and being a poler is very fun when you are a puller. And i just love the sound of a pole wacking 10+ mobs at once; its music to my ears.
what's up with the latest influx of Temple Knights suggestions lately? are you guys trying to run newbies out of L2 as fast as you can? :p

Not counting the Silver Rangers(even though their numbers are still behind the PR's/HE's), there's a **** good reason why there's a shortage of Elven Classes. :p
Not sure on everyones reason for suggesting a TK, but as for me its my top pick for a tank since they will be getting a hate cubic. highest dex has alsways been a + also for highest shield defence rate. Also, they have a M.Def buff that you may be missing on other knights.

If TKs are so beneath you than don't play them, but don't shoot your mouth off about how much the Elves are not to your liking.
I personally think that there is something to be said for playing those types of classes.
Not every player is trying to stack up against the best or worse PvP junkie in L2. Some people actually play games to have a good time (I know, go figure). and that means they play classes that are asthetically pleasing to them, or have little quirks that make them special, whether they can roll everyone in the arena or not isn't the deciding factor for everyone... clown.
Sorry for the rant... sometimes things just... get under my skin. :(
Just for the record, I don't play a TK, nor ever will. You're right, there's not a single thing I find in them that is a defining factor of 'fun'.
Just want to point out that every single person whom I've known to play a TK, quit the game after a while.
Coincidence...............maybe.
So, to rephrase my earlier statement:
*If you like doing ultra crap damage......
*If you like never having a party(hey, you'll only slow an xping party down with your leeching).......
*If you love doing them Raid Bosses, for 0.0002 % (you're gonna be stuck-volunteered in a Tank party all the time)......
*If you like spending 5x the amount of adena on SS than a normal melee would while hunting because of your ultra crap damage and lack of party invites....
If you like all the above, then TK is the class for you =)

If this is what you think about temple knights then i dread to hear what u think about dwarves.
My advice would be a destroyer. Destroyers can use many different weapons such as one handed blunts, pole arms, 2 handed swords, one handed swords, 2 handed blunts, and also fare quite well with a bow for PvP range.
When their health gets low they get guts which is pretty much a walking ultimate defense, and frenzy which increases your power incredibally.
My second choice would seriously be a Blade Dancer. You get hex and power break, dual swords (high damage), great dances for yourself and for people in your party. Also can use a Bow in PvP, but your main objective in PvP is assisting and staying alive to keep your party dance buffed.
Other than those heavy armor classes, you can go dagger which are very nice. Treasure Hunters seem to be a favorite this time around.
So to recap.
Option 1 gives you a meat shield that crushes their foe. Your basic brutish warrior.
Option 2 is a Support and Damage Dealer. People depend on your buffs more than your damage. Also your debuffs such as hex and powerbreak.
Option 3 is an assasin more or less. Lighter armor, but fast and deadly with powerful skills, esspecially when sneaking from behind. Also a great scout due to run speeds and extra terrain boosts such as holding breath longer, and silent step to sneak past mobs without them attacking you.
If this is what you think about temple knights then i dread to hear what u think about dwarves.
Actually, I do have a dwarf, or rather 3 of them, mind you. I have a BH, and 2 artisans.
What's your point?
Temple knights are not a bad class and are not that bad. And Elves are not a bad race. And dwarves have an even harder time to get a group than a temple knight would, and do less damage than a temple knight would.
decent in pvp and welcome in parties... SK is an OK choice if you're looking for a tank hybrid (human DAs and pallys make better straight tanks, not great at solo though) a bladedance or swordsinger are both welcomed in most groups, do alright solo but not in the top of PvP. im not sure why a TK was suggested, the only ones i've seen quit after loosing all thier cash to shots and not getting any groups >.> however, i never played one myself, so perhaps there is hope for a dedicated player.
destroyer, gladi and tyrant are all good choices, do a lot of damage, have decent sets of skills making them fun to play and are pretty decent in pvp as well from what i see :P Dagger classes in any race are also good choices, TH (human) being the most favored of the 3... very nice in pvp and good at soloing/grouping when you find one in need of a DD.
summoner classes and WC are both grouping classes, but pvp depends on how well you play em more than anything else... you might be great, or you might get beat by a prophet, solo seems to go decently as well when you're between groups. the only drawback is summoners can be a little expensive to level up, between 4 kinds of shots and 2 kinds of crystals.
dwarves and the WL can both be VERY effective exp machines when using polearms with a healer or potions to back them up, fastest exp possible. however, the problem with polearms is they arent wonderful in 1v1 pvp, and you wont get in many large groups since most are focused on single kills, not AOE. WL ant WS both shine best in mass pvp, sieges etc. BH not so much as they have no golems and dwarf pvp skills alone are mediocre at best, BH will however be the easiest class to make money with.
every other class takes adena to begin making profit in the first place, BH is the only class that can make easy profits with no spawn camping, time wasted crafting shots for 10 hours (my god i hate that) figuring out the manor system for the first time or living in towns shopping for most of the time you play.... they just grab loot to sell, 2 steps, easiest start and almost no game knowledge needed :P

A fun melee class is a melee class that has the attributes you enjoy and the playstyle you like. Wheter it be support or damage or long range damage or short range damage or tank, you just need to figure out what it is you want to play.
Me for example i am gooing temple knight knowing that its a bastard step child according to most players, but i enjoy it anyways. And thats because i play something i like.
People probally suggest it because not many people play them. If you are going for rarity, umm, then I guess TK would be it. But really, what people say are correct. They are the worst tank class in game, well PVP and leveling wise, and what is L2 about, pvp and leveling...so yea... If you are going the path of TK hurry and when you hit 40 decide to go Sword Singer...
TKs could be good if they gave them a good cubic, and some more useful skills. And for some reason you want to put a bullet threw your head, I will tell you now +4 STR - 4CON +4 DEX -4 CON... "OH but I am a tank, I need health" No, not if your shield defense rate is awesome and you block every attack, esspecially if you go DC for A grade... Or even go Majestic with a shield....I am serious....
The 2 best tanks in L2 are Dark Avengers and Shillen Knights, if you wanna be an elf tank go to the dark side, thats all...
Again, I would recomend a destroyer though...
Suprised more people aren't mentioning daggers because those can be fun too, lots of nice pve skills and good in pvp.

PK. they HAVE hate ALREADY. hate AND hate aura. plus a hate cubic??? please! this is a moronic change (if indeed thats what the cubic does). the ONLY reason the TK in my clan hasnt quit yet, is because NC said they were going to give her class something new this chronicle. and when she finds out that her new "ball" does somehting RANDOMLY which she can ALREADY DO manually . . . its not going to be pretty.
I dont see where you get that. TKs have potential that other tanks dont have. What seperates tanks from other classes is not hp, hp is the poling classes strength.
Tanks are only class with shield skills: highest dex potential means highest shield defence rate.
Tanks have the hate skills: Attract cubic means you will be able to hate more than any other tank.
M.Def self buff which SK and DA dont get.
Highest men. of all tanks means you will be able to use hate skills most. Also men. gives raw M.Def so they have the highest in that area as well.
Wit is the highest of all tanks, which resists curses.
TK may not be offensivley balanced but they are best at tanking.

if the mob is already beating on you, how are you supposed to "hate more"?
edit: for reference, pally got zealot skill last update. its a low hp skill that tyrants and destroyers also got, its supremely uber and orcs didnt even deserve a new skill. TKs got nothing last update. TKs are ONLY wanted for raids, and in raids they get .1% OR LESS xp.
Hate skills that have a power # just like a nuke are not curses. Some ppl think they just land or they dont land. This is not true. Hate builds by direct hate skills or hate generated by damage,heal/buff assists, or whatever else ****** them off. Thats why you would never ever see a tank come in to raid group and hate skill on a boss that hp is already down half way from the group you joined, and succeed on the 1st try.
So when you already have aggro and you hate skill it again you just keep generating more hate. Any tank in a raid that does not at least use hate skill everytime they mp regen its cost then they are a terrible tank and will most certainly lose aggro.
Look at it this way: the power # on hate skill is equal to the same amount of hate a physical damage skill would generate with the same power # but does not do any damage to the mop.
However, skills that involve aggro, and therefore hate, such as confusion spells are curses. They land or they dont land.
The hate engine on MMORPGs has always been a very complex thing. So there are alot of theories you cant prove, but there are some things that you can prove. To know the truth entirely wed need the developers to fill us in.
WarRaven you totally didnt understand what he said. Whatever you think about TK his point is that if you like the class you play and think its fun it doesnt matter how good it is. Let me guess your main is a HE or Necro?

Exactly what my point was, you play what you want to play and what you can find beeing fun.
The i hate TK:s threads are getting bigger and bigger and the whole Tk bashing is getting more and more annoying. Just leave it as it is and let people play what they want to play. If you start one char and u find it not to your liking you can always sell the stuff and start over. Just because you can't see the reason for anyone for gooing temple knight does not mean there is none.

That is what i was refering to, so no, i didnt misunderstand.
And when it come down to pure melee id take dex over str anyday. Ok...so SK gets Hex and Power break which makes them tank better and get natural aggro better, but any other DE fighter can do that if you group with them; so its not unique, just real handy to know it will be there for you.
My whole point is TKs dont suk like everyone says they do. IMO I like them better than a Paladin. You want more offense then they arent the best tank for that. It is more practical after all to be more balanced to hold your own when you must.
But yea, play what you want, its not my character you are making for crying out loud.
1.Orcs eat Elves
2.Anything 2hand is better than 1
3.Elf the other other white meat
4.Skillz , tyrants got mad skillz
5.Point and Click kill !!!!
i'll think of others...... so notes.
After reading all the feedback from this thread I started playing my TK again to see why the class has fallen out of favor with the forum crowd. After about 2 days of playing around, and getting a new feel for the class I have come to a conclusion; TKs are among the BEST tanks in the game.
To start with, I have made a few notes of things that I feel need to be shared... all of my findings are based on my own experience of playing at lvl 58.
1st - Having the highest natural dex of any tank translates to the highest shield defense rate, the fastest run speed, attack speed, and accuracy of all the tanks. (Not to mention Crit rate and crit damage).
2nd - With a good MEN stat and the highest WIT, they have an almost endless suply of MP compared to the other tanks, which can be used like the Paladin, to heal or to root enemies. The WIT helps the storm cubic to attack much more frequently than any of the SKs cubics, and for decent albiet not phenominal damage.
3rd - The high MEN stat an Holy Armor makes for an outrageous M.Def that nukers of an equal grade with heavily OEd weapons still have a hard time punching through.
For the sceptics out there, I will list my settup:
+3 Doom Heavy Set
+3 Ecliptic Sword w/Magic Power
+3 Black Ore Set
In PvP against a good friend who plays an SK 1 level higher, I was able to take him out in about 1 min 45 seconds with a few good crits and some help from the storm cubic. Not one of the SKs debuffs made it through my M.Def and I shield blocking 9 out of 10 of her attacks. My CP was still at 1/4 when he went down, and he had B-grade Damasuc (focus) up against my C-grade Ecliptic... (which makes the storm cubic that much more mean).
I fought two spellhowlers who in A-grade culdnt do more than 600 damage a hit, and had no hope of out-running me, each lasted about 1 minute before I cought them, rooted them, and had my way with them.
My only loss for that day was by a DA, who chainstunned me after I killed his panther.
I havn't had that much fun a Loooong time.
So in response to those of you who unjustly slight the TK for being inferior; you have either never played one, or are just terrible at playing them.
Perhaps the TK is due a little more credit than peopel think, and I would be delighted to see people test my theory and come back and post their findings in a few days ^^

honestly, i would love to play a TK. BUT lol they just look so lame in armour...im very vain, i know. lol. But seriously thanks, this is a great information for choosing a tank. :) goodjob!
Just a few notes.. Elven fighters doesn't have high MEN, they have 1 MEN more than humans, equal to nothing. They do have a selfbuff that everyone else gets from PP or WC.
I dont see where you get that. TKs have potential that other tanks dont have. What seperates tanks from other classes is not hp, hp is the poling classes strength.

DA do get a m.def self buff. Its the same as the lvl 3 prophet buff.
i didnt say that TK sucks. i said that a "hate cubic" is redundant and stupid. hate aura and hate, i am aware, are slightly different, some might even say they are situational versions of the same thing. with both of these skills can you honestly tell me that you have problems keeping aggro? so if the hate skills that you have already work, whats the point of adding another hate skill to TK, which goes off randomly? it would be like a PW haveing a charm cubic. completely useless waste of crystals, since they already have an Active charm skill and active > random.
There is still no official word on what the new cubic will be, or for that matter if they plan to release the new cubic at this time. ANY, and I do mean ANY information you have heard regarding the TKs 3rd cubic is sheer rumor and hearsay... I would disregard all of it.
