my friend decided to play an OL

my friend who is "not so new" to the game (if you get my meaning), has decided to start "playing" it and is going to make an OL as his first character. how am i supposed to convince him that that is a very foolish choice?
Why is it foolish if that is what he wants to play?
Whats wrong with an OL? it's just hard to lvl for 1-20
and i suppose saying welcome to your friend is in order :p
OLs cannot be subbed, so its certainly worth making 1 from scratch. Same for WS. Those are the only 2 mains you cant go wrong with for the sole reason that you could start any other class at lvl 40.
OLs are a great class for the all around player, They have alright Patk, alright Matk, their casting speed isn't too bad, they buff and potentially heal (specially at higher levels) Really there's nothing wrong with them, it is like the Bard class for D&D the all around character so you can do a little bit of everything but not be too focused on one particular skill...
you guys didn't understand what i meant. this will be his first character, so no top grade equipment. without that, soloing an ol that is hard already would become practicaly impossible. and the only partys that an OL would benefit are pole grps and clan partys. and the first can do well enough without an OL anyway.

Ahh, that makes more sense. No I do understand.
you mean, it will be his first character on that server, or first character ever?
first character ever.
That kinda contradicts your original post

If he has some game experience, let him choose what he wants to play.

Anyways, if your friend gets a good clan, he wont have any problems exept gear wise(if the clan doesnt help him). He just has to go up to a good big clan, tell them he wants to be an OL and youd be surprised at the amout of clans that would take him in. If hes a dedicated player and plays often, I dont see the problem with your friend becoming an OL if thats what he wants to play.
My first "main" was a bishop, which ranks right up there in OL difficulty. The other characters didn't make it past 30 at the time, if they like it leave them alone. They just need a great clan.

Yeah, right then why I never see an "group LF OL" shouts? Not in orange nor in greenish. They, same as bishes are a class that ally needs at mass events and no one wants in exp parties. And at high lvls solo OL is realy painfull..
They definatly arent sought for in exp. groups. They also arent worth much for all on 1 groups so they are restricted to aoe groups. Its more like a class you make with a few friends that you only lvl with them; just an alt to pair with a WL and some healers.
I dont know where you guys got your info from, but ols dont benefit aoe groups at all. Infact, they dont benefit ANY group at all.

The seals (im assuming this is the reason you think they are good in aoe groups? They sure as hell cant buff the group. . .) dont land very well on mobs, the buffs are subpar compared to any other buffer and the melee ability doesnt exist unless you have a group of recharges on you at all times. Sure, they can melee, but not with soulcry on. And in that case id rather have a prophet with greater might, haste and pof (among many other buffs ols dont get.)

Then again, I have a lot of fun playing my OL, and im glad I picked it. Let your friend do what he wants so he has fun. :p
Hmmm, dont benefit aoe groups at all; maybe a little sarcasm due tot he nerf on seals landing. I have an lvl 40 OL that I havent geared up yet, but ill be sure to gear him up for his seals to land better, in Demon robe set, +int tats, and Ecliptic axe with Magic Power. Then switch to Orcish Poleaxe after seals are cast and use Soul Cry. Thier accuracy may still suk but there is nothing missing in P.Atk with Soul Cry on compared to other polers. So you still lighten the load on healers mp with accuracy/atk.speed debuffs and get some decent DD in on the train. Then you can just sit for mp on the pulls.

Like i said ,not sought after because they really arent necessary, but yes, you can make a worthy contribution to an AOE pole group.
imo OL's r a great choice. get him into a good clan/academy and hell be good to go. ally buffs and cp heals ftw

Demon robe? Fine.
+Int tat? HAHAHA! NC says your a healer....can't touch INT.
Eclipse Axe w/Magic Power.....suuuure +15% MP cost. Hope you have an army of rechargers. You'd be better off with Acumen.
Orchish Poleaxe? ROFLCOPTER!! NERFED along with other 'non aoe' melee AND with the added mystic nerf on top of that.
Oh, and that max Mob limit....ouch, just ouch.
DoT skills do NO extra damage w/BSPS either.

...Once you've played an OL for awhile....Dwarves don't appear so gimp no more. ...NC seems hellbent on making OLs siege 'buffbots'.

healers can increase INT, but can not lower it... as far as the last time I looked which was a long time ago also that mite of changed!
Healers have never, EVER, EVER been able to adjust INT at all. Where DO you get your info from?
Thats right, forgot OL is considered a healer/buffer. But as far as 15% more mp cost from Magic Power, that should be a huge problem when you only cast 2 seals and sit on pulls.

So let me ask you. Would you say an OL is at least worth half a DD and half a healer?

The honest answer is no. Put a real "healer" (how is an ol a healer in pve?) or dd in its place and your party will be much better off.

You forgot that an overlord is a healer and cant change int? So what you're saying is you just assumed all of this based on nothing. While the replies you are getting, that are based on expierience, need to be ignored?

As for magic power not being a huge problem, it would be. That is the most ridiculous idea I have ever heard.
Your heal cast 240 mp each cast, two seals is anywhere between 206 and 306 mp, buffs are 200 mp each.

Im assuming you would be wearing heavy armor, just buffing yourself in heavy armor means you have no mp left, using a pole on a mystic means you have like, what? -12 accuracy (on a class that already has low accuracy) and maybe 300 cast speed? Soul cry cost 14 mp to turn on and -10 mp per tick. You would be 100% out of mp the first pull.
When you debuff atk speed and accuracy, that greatly affects how often the healer must use mp. Its the defensive side of the equation.

OH! you mean those seals that dont land. And your heals that are compleatly pointless to use when all the dmg is being focused on one person.

ps. Sorry for the late edit on my last post, I had to leave the room.
I never said OL should actually use heal spells in a pole party, that would be stupid unless its an emergency.

You say seals never land. How bad is it really? And have you ever tried landing those seals with emp and set up i mentioned? I know they got nerfed but somehow i doubt they made them as bad as you make it sound.

Im getting quite eager to gear up my OL to see this horrid nerf for myself.
...
So you're saying the ol needs to be a healer/dd but shouldnt use heals, meaning the party still needs a normal healer. And the ol is pretty much just a 1/2 dd. This party sounds awesome, what members does it have?

Its as bad as I say it is, seals dont land. The base land rate for most seals is 0.40. The land rate for the single target versions are TWICE the land rate of the OL versions. The AoE dots have an even lower landing rate. These have pretty much the lowest landing rates in the game. (other than things like binding cubic)

Btw, please, please, please please please gear up your OL in that exact setup and post a screen shot. Make sure to point out the magic power weapon.
Surprised about all the OL bashing, I guess it's much like a bishop where we shine at mass pvp and epic raids and not much else.
BTW KoreaPL, why do you want a screenshot?
