i have been reading stratic manoring guide and i'm really confused over the formula given to calculate the number of reward i get. The formula given is (Seed amount*buyback price/NPC value of material).
I did a test for this formula today and here's the result...
Seed Type: Dark Coba
Buyback: 50
Braid Hemp (reward 2): Npc value 250
I turned in 10 fruits the first time and according to the formula i should get 2 Braid Hemp. 10X50/250=2
Actual result when i turn in, i only got 1 Braid Hemp.
Second test, i turned in 25 fruits (Dark Coba). According to formula i should be getting 4 Braid Hemp. 25X50/250
However, i only got 2 Braid Hemp when i turn it in.
How do i calculate the number of reward i'll be getting? Your advice will be much appreciated.
The dwarf is correct... The 250a price for Braided Hemp that you see is what the NPC will by it from you for... NPC buys items for 1/2 their actual value, so simply double the price the NPC will buy an item for and use that in your calculations.

This is correct. All NPC's buy for '1/2 value'.
Be aware however, that the formula your using is a very good guide, but it isn't 100%. There is a bit more going on 'under the hood' so to speak when selling to the manor. There is a small but noticable 'rounding' that goes on when the manor is calculating how many materials you receive. Thankfully, this 'rounding' is in your favor! Normally, any 'extra' fruits are lost when the number of materials you receive turns out to a fraction after the formula is done. BUT, sometime you will receive an extra material even though the math says you did not have enough to get the next mat.
I'm not sure if the game simply rounds up to the next nearest whole number (It's not exact like that) or if their is some other factor involved. As best I can determine, the value of your crops can be as much as 1.1x what the formula suggests. I've only really seen this when getting high value mats on low/mid fruits. (Type 2 rewards on Coda/Cobol) Otherwise, for the Type 1 rewards the formula has been pretty much dead on, even when turning in large numbers of fruit.
I did a lot of testing, turning in numbers of crops too small to be guaranteed anything back. The way it works is this:
Say you have enough crops that the math says you should get 40.62 materials. You're guaranteed to get 40 materials, with a 62% chance to get a 41st material as well.
On average, over a large number of turnins, you'll get exactly what you should.
soooooo
lets see if I got this right
in order to break even you have to sell for 2x the price of the seed because you can only sell the reward for 1/2 what its worth?
so whata ya do, hang on to the stuff til the buy price goes up or wait for the seed price to go down before ya buy seed?
so far I've lost money every time I've tried manoring.
The castle lord buys all seeds at 10% of the nominal cost of the resulting crops. That's 5a per seed for the lowest level, up to 275a. Any sane castle lord will sell those seeds as cheap as possible, to get all of them sold - they cost him money no matter if people buy them or not. For our castle, that means we sell the lowest-level seeds for around 20a each, while the "top" seeds cost just 50a each - exactly our own buy price.
The crop price - remember, about 5 times the seed price from any manor worth using - is more flexible, since not bought back crop doesn't lose the castle any money. Usually, it's at around 50% of the nominal crop valued for the sought-after crops (Chilly Cobols and so on) up to about three to four times this value for not-so much used crops.
So, with a manor set up as it should be, you should already get seeds at most at 25% price of the resulting crops. It can be as little as 5%, though.
In addition, any seed can result in more than one (up to 15 or so) crops. Usually, you'd want to manor in catacombs and necropoli when possible, so you can have a guaranteed return of three crops per seed or more, for most of them.
A little calculation example, using Teon's prices:
1 Chilly Cobol seed (level 34) costs the castle lord 25a. Usually, you can get them at around 50a per seed from the manor manager, then - ideally from Dion, to be able to use them in Catas (although Giran and Innadril could work too). That's your investment.
Each of the seeds generates around three crops when used in Heretic's or Pilgrim's. Each of the crops can be sold back for around 200a each; assuming reward 1 (animal bone), that's 600a worth of animal bone, exactly 4 bones (base price is 150a each).
Each bone can be sold (on Teon) for roughly 800a in an overnight sell shop in Giran or Aden. That's 3200a.
To summarise: For each 50a you invest in chilly cobols, you'll get roughly 3200a in return. For each 1M adena, you'll get 640M market worth of animal bones.
ya I bought from Gludin Village ( or what ever the southern town is ) all they had left that was profitable ( or looked ) was Desert Cobal for 200 adena, crop was 250. ( was also in my level range )
Was hunting Abandoned Camp.
Bought 50 ( 10000 ) to try and I was rewarded with 54 coal and sold that at store for only 5400.
So I guess I need to get there @ 8:00pm so I can buy the cheapest seed while its still available or buy some place else
sry only been playing a week and the dialog is kinda confusing

NEVER EVER SELL BASE MATERIALS TO THE NPC's!!!!!
Go to giran and find a player buying for 2x that or better!
On my server alone, between the buy shops and the sell shops the 'value' of coal alone is 500-700a!
For 54 coal you could have gotten 27,000a - 37,800a!
By selling to the NPC you LOST 21,600-32,400a!
Edit: Be aware when buying seeds though! Some manor lords assume you are doing all seeds in places like catacombs (More fruit returned than seeds bought.) OR that material the seed gives is in such demand that they will raise the price of seeds up to idiot levels. (Raises mat prices, inflates the market, and sets everything up to crash at a later date if everyone does it....) 200a for Desert coda is on the extreme edge of priciness....last lord to own Gludio on my server set the price to 30a! Buyback was about 150a I think at that time, but the profit margin was much better.
Best advice I can give you is to make another character (if you never level it at all it doesn't matter...) and run them to Giran.
Now whenever you need to sell some of your materials or check the 'average market prices' just login that char and see whats for sale/buying. If your selling, just freight the mats to the char in giran and it will only cost you 1,000a per 'stack'. If you do this, try to build up a stockpile of materials before you sell them. That way the 1K fee to freight doesnt eat into your profits.
I usually don't do more than 200 seeds at a time. (Solo 1x HP mobs mostly.) I may buy 200-1000 seeds at a time depending on what they are, but it can be extremely boring to do so many at once, thus I sow them in smaller batches.
When turning fruit back into the manor, if it requires a large number of seeds per material I will turn in the number required for the most materials I can get, then save any remainder for the next turn in I do for that fruit OR If another manor is giving the alternate reward type I may use the remainder to trade for the other mat. EG - I am doing Red Cobol for Enria, I need 54 fruit per Enria, but only have enough for 5, with 34 fruit left over. If another manor is offering to give me Charcoal, I may trade the remaining 34 fruit for Charcoal or I can save the 34 fruit for the next turnin if I plan on doing more red cobols later.
While manoring, I usually let my drops pay for any expenses and the cost of seeds. I turn in the fruit for mats as soon as possible, but I let the materials build up in my WH until I have a decent amount. Once I have a good amount (100K+ min) then I take/freight them to Giran and sell then. Usually this means doing a small stack of seeds per night/whenever I play and selling the whole bundle maybe once every week or two.
If your just starting and need cash sooner, I'd still stockpile a bit but maybe sell once every 2-3 days depending on how much you play and how much you manor. As you aquire cash you can stockpile more before selling to keep your 'shop time' in giran down to a 'comfortable' level.
Finally...you need to pay attention to the materials market to get the current 'value' (they do fluctuate somewhat...some more than others.) and watch the buy/sell prices on seeds and fruits in the manor. DON"T get stuck with high priced seeds for low value mats! Sometimes it's better to NOT use the manor and wait for the castle to change hands and a new lord to setup the manor better. That or relocate to an area where seeds are a more reasonable price if possible.
nope you have it wrong
manor buys back at full price
its almost imposible to lose money while manoring
Well, not loose, but to be honest I sometimesdo not care about seeding much when let's say seed costs 100a and buyback is 60a (recent prices on Gustin?), reward set to crafted leather ... to receive 10 CRs per 1000 seeds? Guess I'm too greedy :p

No, the castle lords are just both too greedy and too ignorant to set up their manor properly.
actually until a month or so ago gustin had some of the best manors out of all the servers
currently most castles are run by [censored] who dont know how to set them up right
and no i have never owned a castle or set up manor before, i just know what seeds are worth doing and what arent
I've noticed on Gustin that Giran and some others did not have any seeds for sale nor where buying them. Was this due to change of ownership of a castle?
Definetly check and see what reward you are getting when you turn in. Some just give you junk like stems. Most in demand items are bones, charcoal, coal, varnish, iron ore etc. Just do a little research in Giran for prices.

Yeah, I'm on Gustin as well...and the last siege weekend saw some manors change hands. You can tell a lot about a clan/ally given how and IF their manor is setup.
I think right now, Aden/Innadril/Schuttgart are setup the best. Dion is working but the setup is half-*****. (Some ok, some stupid...) Not sure about Rune/Goddard level manors...I don't have a char in those levels that is good at farming.

Yep, I agree.
Also Giran usually has some nice manor setup, if it's working that is.
During siege weekends many castlelords shut down manor, because when castle changes hands new lord won't get extra money from castle vault :p
Also some castles have problems with occasional resetting manor out of blue sky - I know Oren likes to do it.
