Ok, So I went to Garin for the first time last night. Wow I was impressed with the town but sheesh It was like a forest of shops! Is that all people are doing is sitting around and selling/buying stuff? I don't think so but the first time impression is very powerful. I also teamed for the first time. Haven't figured out the teaming interface yet but it will come in time.

And I noticed something. My damage out put sucked in comparison to the girl (in-game) I was teaming with. She was doing 30's - 50's in the damage and I was rarely breaking past 15. we were both at lvl 10. She was doing this damage being level 8 as well. What is up with that? Am I missing something in the game mechanics?

Also everything is so expensive. 12k to trade in for a broad sword? ouch! I wiped out my Adena 3 times over the last 2 days upgrading and buying healing potions. Of course I think the most Adena I've had so far is 6k at a time. and cumalitively maybe 15 to 18k.... Is that pretty normal?
Chances are she had a higher P atk weapon....

And yeah things aren't cheap in the world....

Let me ask you....How often do you take a healing pot and do you use soul/spirt shots at all?
soul/spirit shots? I see them in the inventory but haven't ever used one. I thought they were like insperations is CoX and I hardly ever use those there.

She (the girl I was playing with) had a couple of chakra's that seemed to emit lightning when she hit things.
they person probably has a better wep or was spaming soul shot.. the ppl in giran are just afk shops trying to makes some money like everyone else.. and once you start getting to higher lvls you will make more adena for killing mobs. you can use your soul shot by putting it in your hot key bar and right clicking on them.. thats sets them to spam on every hit.

She was using soulshots.... They double a weapons damage output. They can also become a money sink as most weapons take from 1-3 shots per hit.

I only use shots when i've gotten my self into deep [923] :)
Every new char do quest and get 10k of them so LOL go ahead and use them, we need to know what race you are before I can say what quest you need to do to obtain them, the pop up msg thought when you hitted lv 6 and 10 should have told you however.

Making money is a part of the game. You will either spend your time making money or leveling. Some people have two (or more) accounts so that they can be selling items while their main is out leveling. I do this.

All of the people sitting in Giran are selling, buying, and crafting (there are craft shops as well).

That is one of the unique things about L2 which many other games do not have. The economy is a vibrant economy of buying, selling and haggling. This is why there is no auction house (and you will see many threads asking for them).

People don't get that an auction house changes the entire economy. This is an economy where the players actively buy, sell and haggle in order to get the best price/deal. It is very interactive.

Oh, and be careful, scamming is allowed in game. Make sure what you are buying is indeed "what you are buying" and is the price you think it is.
Dark-Elf I think I have done the quest however.... or at least am in the middle of doing it. I've been makeing a point to do all the quests available in the village. Right now I'm doing the one from the Blacksmith and the Elder.... both of wich require bones from the Dark Arts School. I'm also doing the Shrooms, Imps, fishing, and Orc quests. until level 12 I think thats all that are available as I've done everything below. The Blacksmith quest will give me a new sword I think so at least that will be taken care of.

Ok so the shot doubles damage... thats nice. how often do I need to use the shot to get the effect? is it like a 10 second thing? or 1 per hit or something. I'm getting the impression it only works 1 per hit. now I'm assuming that the soul does physical and the spirit does magical? that would make sense.

If you place your shots on the shortcut bar, and right click on them you set them to auto.... And you use XX amount of shots on each blow....

Yeah, soulshots are for melee attack. And spirtshots are for magic based attack.

The shots (if they are enabled) apply themselves every hit. If they miss that is more the game's fault (on a few occassions there has been "shot lag").

What server are you on?

(oh, to give you an idea of how often you might want to do these quests: when I first started the game, around lvl 18, my clan leader and I ran the fungus quest (dark elf village) and the spider quest over and over again for an entire saturday just to make money.

We would pass each other on the road all day. Back then people ran more, less porting.
if you click your weapon icon in inventory once, and check the info listed it will tell you exactly how many shots it uses... this number varies from weapon to weapon. different grades of weapons use different grades of shots, for example when you turn 20 you will get a D grade mastery skill automatically... if you were to buy a D grade sword to match your skill level, any No Grade shots (NG = 1-19 levels) would not work on the D grade weapon.

Soulshots and spiritshots are used per hit, if you drag them onto your hotbar and right click it will be automated... meanin, the game will put shots on your weapon for you untill you either run out of them or cancel it with a second rightclick. be careful using this feature though, the extra damage can be addicting! and shots are a huge money sink, especially for low levels.

all the people sitting in town will be mostly AFK, usually players will leave a Private shop up when they go to bed, or will have a second account to leave sitting while thier main characters are being played. if you're having money problems you should be able to find a store in there buying base materials such as Animal bone, Animal skin, Iron, varnish etc.

a useful tip for when you are grouping... left-clicking a party member's name in the list will target them, while right-clicking thier name will assist the person for his/her target, double right-clicking will make your character attack whatever that party member has targetted.
I've done the quests you are talking about. The Dark Arts School can be dangerous in places as some of the mobs aggro. That would be a good place to start using the shots you have. Your damage output will be much better :)

Sovrath, I'm playing on Lionna as that is the "RP" Server and I enjoy the immersion. Right now I have my first characther SkyGrunthor (Dark-Elf, Fighter, lvl 10) and RhapsodyGrunthor(Elf, Mystic, lvl 5)

She (the girl I was playing with) had a couple of chakra's that seemed to emit lightning when she hit things.

ahh the writings of a newb ^^
chakras maybe mean noobie buffs you guys think?

this guys pretty clue'ie
my bets on him makeing it ^^
Nameless1 you have much faith!

Everyone is new at some point and some of the basic things are not always out there for easy consumption as an MMO becomes mature. They are assumed by the old players and new players often have a difficult time figuring it out.

This will be the 3rd MMO I've ever played. I started with DAoC in college for about 5 months. then didnt' play any MMO for over a year then for the last year and a half have been playing City of Heros/Villians. Now the play and mechanics difference between this game and CoX is quite dramatic.

This means that I am now learning the basics and as of this writing have had about 8 hours of play in. That being said thank you for your guys patience with me.

I'm betting on myself as well :) Maybe you'll extend an invite out for a clan :)
what server are you on (sorry if you already said)
not sure if you know but its in every clans best interest to recruit true noobs and keep them as happy as posible

It only gets harder from here on out. L2 is definately a money grind moreso than a level grind. Especially if this is your first character.

To start with however, you need to avoid using lots of consumables. Especially if you do not need to. And with all the instant herbs that drop from field mobs, you should not be buying so many healing potions. 'Dungeon mobs' do not drop the herbs and the game expects you to either: A) Party a Healer. B)Use your HP regen skills. OR C)Sit down and rest.

Save healing potions for *emergencies*. Don't use them to 'normally' regen your HP.

Buff potions (Alacrity, Haste, etc.) are *expensive* to spam, as their use can severly crimp your adena per kill ratio. Use these sparingly. You can get some of these from certain quests. (Usually randomly.)

Shots (Soulshots, spiritshots) are *THE* big money sink in this game. If your just grinding and spamming shots constantly, your pretty much trading all the adena that drops for faster killing. Nukers and archers are about the only classes that can spam BSPS and make a fair profit at higher levels. (Getting the adena to buy good equipment and be able to do this is another story however...) Melee however, tend to get the SS-spam shaft of poverty however. Blunt weapon users get it the worst.

There are a few 'starter' quests that have good rewards, make sure you do those. (Weapon, SS, heal pots) In fact, pretty much do every quest available in your starter town at least once. You should get enough free "Soulshots for Novices" (same as NG Soulshots, but non-tradable.) to last you until L20 and then a bit more. These are free, so you can spam those without worry. After they run out you will need to be more careful about spending cash on Shots though.

Prices on equipment will skyrocket at ruinous rates as your level rises...but it stays pretty constant until you reach B grade (L52) as long as you avoid the overpriced sell shops. Keep your eyes open as you can still find the occasional 'deal'. Otherwise, you can get to top NG with the 'exchange' option from the newbie guide or by buying from Gludin/Gludo/Dion NPC stores. For D grade, Giran's NPC armor/weapon shop will get you to second best D grade armor/weapons. The Luxury shop in Giran even allows you to purchase C grade equipment with Crystals. (D/C grade crystals) At the same time, the Blacksmith of Mammon can exchange (free) and upgrade (Not free) D and C grade weapons. (He does not help with your armor however...) He only takes Ancient Adena, so if you want to use him to upgrade your weapon, you will need to spend a fair amount of time in a catacomb grouping. For the most part, I would just go through D grade using the regular shops and only turn to mammon for upgrading in C grade. (Don't Upgrade D to C though...its cheaper to sell the D weapon and buy a C weapon from the lux shop!)

It will take time to make all the money you need however. I'd recommend avoiding those who say 'play the market' though. Doing this requires that you already have money....and be able to afford losing some of it if the market changes. It also requres you leave your computer on with a char in shop mode for long periods of time. This ties up large amounts of cash for periods of time as well.

Your best method for making good amounts of cash relatively fast is the manor. It's not a foolproof way, so research it before jumping in. And keep in mind, lots of other people already know the 'best ways' to use the manor so competition can be strong for the best seeds/fruits.

L2 is not a game you can 'just play' and expect money and equipment to fall into your lap. Once you figure out 'the system' however, its just a matter of time before your decked out in top grade equipment and rolling over the mobs.

Shame you aren't on Hindemith, I would have thrown some money your way.

In any case, stay with it and get to know the clans on your sever. Once you have done this try to get into the academy of one you like. From there you should be fine.

the game is about the people.
