HEY! great question! I just added +4DEX -4CON to my DA yesterday. it works pretty awesomely! lol. You block more, crit more, run faster, and swing faster. and if you spammin kitty shot...yur gonna rock the house. lol. what is yur equip setup?
HI ,,I HAVE doom set heavy and and a dama focus +3
thanks for the advice,,,did u get them from mamon dude
im thinking i want duals,,,i love dual weapons
DA in pole party = death...
That's VR who keep poler alive... because every hit they give, they get HP... W/o a pole, if you're the one taking all the attacks, your healer won't be able to keep you alive even if you are a DA ! Or you'll have to take mobs 4 by 4 (depending on level, but not a lot)...
Since C4, poling is for poler class & healers... Forget it if you're not one of em !
for a DA, taking on your CON is... well...
If i were you, i'd do str-8 dex+4 con+4 :
CON to have a LOTS of HP/CP and be able to take a lot more hit before dying
DEX to have a decent block rate (very usefull for a tank), high running speed, more attack speed and critics
and about STR, just see how much dmg you do compared to a dagger, a mage or any DD...
With STR-8 (-11 with doom) , your party won't do the difference ;) Do your job : be hit !

well that is a good setup if all you ever, ever do is tank. If you solo a lot like myself, Dex is where its at, leave yur STR alone. you'll do great with just 1 tat.
well tanking in catas i dont really do much of i may duo sometimes with a sh clan m8 but thats about it really
_8str sounds really expensive
i thought with tats u had to have +x -x didnt think u could have +x +x
ive never really thought much about tats untill now
tbh im a little confused,,i may just get all 3 that way im prepared for solo or party tanking am i rite????
does taking -8str from my toon not make me weaker??? i dont understand this
looking up dyes it says str-increase amount of physical dmg
so -8str i assume thats taking 8 str point of my toon
would make me weaker ?????
what theyre suggesting is +4con -4str, and +4dex -4str tats. the -8str will of course make you weaker. if you are wanting to be a true tank though you'll need all the hp/pdef/evasion etc that you can get, as you should have someone else there to act as dd.
Yeah, a lot weaker ! And if you have a doom set, you'll have -11 str... that mean you'll be a bit more powerfull than a mage in melee lol :p
Remember that you're a tank ! that mean that you're already weak ! if you put +4 str, you'll be a bit less weak, but you'll stay weak ! You're done to play in group (like every healer/buffer class) and to be hit. If you really want to solo, then buy a sword with focus, CON-8, str+4 dex+4... but if you want to solo, then reroll !
- - - - - - -
About tatoo, and for your info , the max you can get on a carac is +5. There no limit for -. You can combine a +5 tatoo bonus with you bonus set (you can have +8 CON if you put con+3, con+2 and a doom plate set)

Disagree. STRONGLY. lol. it depends on the tank. I play a DA and i solo great.
Just remember - CON is completely irrelevant through most PvE scenarios (PvP is different, of course), and STR can help keep you out of scenarios where CON suddenly becomes important.

There are two schools of thought on this subject. I will explain both. But first, dont take advise from someone that doesnt play a DA.
First, you have the true tank DA.
Second, you have the Semi Tank DD DA.
With the true tank DA you want to use atleast a +4 Dex -4Str Tat, dont touch your con unless you up it and sacrifice str. After 60 you wont notice the DPS that much with the a change in your str, your criticals will be the only way you will deal any significant amount of damage (in addition to your Panther) With a full time healers/buffer use a +4dex -4Con. and get a health SA wep.
If you do small groups only and want to deal some damage too go +4 dex -4 con and if you want (with a full time healer) add a +4 Str -4 con tat. Dont do this with Majestic Armor though.
As a small party tank with a healer you will have much fun with a +4 dex tat and a focus wep (with your cat helping)
But first, dont take advise from someone that doesnt play a DA.
That's a poor way to defend your opinion - trust me, DDs that see aggro slip off -STR tanks and healers who try to keep their mana up when a tank can't get any HP back because they gimped their STR out so VR doesn't make a difference anymore have a fair opinion on this too - and generally, your party's opinion of your performance is more important than your own.
Your assertion that criticals do the biggest damage is correct - what's incorrect is that STR is then somehow irrelevant. Criticals (except when you're using crit damage SAs) come as flat multiplier of your standard damage - that means that more PAtk translates to bigger crits.
There's also the fact that the most healing most melees receive is undoubtably through VR. Except of course for -STR tanks. They do too little damage to be reliably healed by VR, therefore requiring more heals, which in turn removes mana from healers that could be better spent on damage mitigation (crowd control) or extra damage output (recharges).
As far as the difference in PAtk being insignificant? At 62 with a DLE+3 the PAtk is 471 in a doom set with -8 STR, and over 800 in Tallum Heavy (more in majestic) 846 in Majestic.
That's more than 2/3rds extra healing through VR. That's a palpable difference in aggro control (I've never seen a doom tank managing to crit a mob back off a DD - and they lose aggro a lot more than STR tanks to begin with), and last but not least hardly an insignificant improvement in damage output.
Yes, yes, in really rough endgame places for people beyond the third class change, things might look different - but for all other intents and purposes, for standard PvE, STR means better tanking (that is, better aggro control and less damage taken).
I've learned maline knows more about my class than i do so I'll conditionally agree with her.
Back to the OP...I finally got tired of the wrestling with this and chose not to go with a tat.
Our clan has a fabulous high level DA and he went 'clean' and is WAY above me in levels, tanks beautifully, and is a walking encyclopedia on DA facts.
I decided I couldn't go far wrong to emulate him.
The DA is set up from base stats to do what it does. I have a weapon with focus SA. I go doom heavy cause that was my first choice and I'm too ****ed poor to own two sets of armor.
I seem to solo okay (if you can call partying with a panther 'solo').
I seem to tank pretty well.
I'm not really high enough for regular pvp and don't have the experience to comment on that.
I tend to believe from my own exp that Maline is basically correct.
When I had the non-SA weapon and was still in Doom, I didn't keep aggro quite as well (minor difference I would say).
I won't be trying the whole "DD set up" anytime soon. But it seems logical. Hit more, heal more (w/VR), hold more.....get saved not by your pdef and hp's but by party healers.
Spending 90% of my time alone, I don't often get any buffs and I can count on one hand the sessions I've played in the last month with a healer.
For me, the doom and dama w/sa and some pots means kitty and I can solo white mobs safely and to our little heart's content.
thanks for replys guys
now im thinking as the last post suggested to just go clean,,i mean like tbh things are fine with the way im playing ,,i keep all aggro of the SH and he is5 lvl higher,,,maybe i could spend the adena elsewhere,,,i dont really have the knoledge to just try any tat,,,i fear i may gimp my toon
i would like to see more crits coming from my dama focus +3
but i not gonna rush into things :/
TO Maline:
All very good opinions, but you forget a good tank that knows how to use his hate skills pretty much overcomes any of these objections. If you are relying on a tank to hold aggro through damage, you need to find a new tank. :D

If you want more crits, +4 Dex -4 Con. You will be happy with this. Sign up for the Seven Signs Event and get the AA yourself for the dyes. Its is much cheaper this way. I beleive its 174AA per dye and you need 10.
I'm with Maline, he knows what he's talking about.
STR>DEX for dealing damage. Dex just doesn't add enough to compete with the damage increase from STR blow by blow. With Focus SA DEX makes even less sense conpared to STR.
To the one that said that Hate can hold aggro, sure, if you want to spam hate and bee oom in 2 minutes. A single critical hit will often steal aggro, especially from high Patk classes like archers and destroyers.
Well, Mailine's explanation of the role of STR in using VR is very helpful to me. It helps me understand why so many players are advising Tallum Heavy over something like Nightmare Heavy. The difference is not just in bonuses on attack speed, or lack therof. Also, I don't have much experience with tattos and dyes, but I tend to agree with players who "keep it clean". Buffs can add what you need, and heavy armor is going to modify your stats somewhat and make you sacrifice something. But beyond armor, my feeling is play to your toon's strengths, and use buffs to help with areas your toon is weak in.
Tatoos are for helping in your chars (NOT TOON) strong areas, or whatever you want to augment. Buffs are buffs, anyone can get them, and you want as many as you can hold, all the time, 24/7 :)
Want to do more damage, get a DD setup and DD armor. Want to take more damage and ahve more HP, go that way.
If you Don't have big groups or Bosses to tank for, Don't go the HP route.
On my lvl 66 DA I used Tallum heavy +4str +5dex with a Hasted AoBA. For small groups and solo it was great. I was never rich enough to get a Hasted Tallum tho. By the way Tallum Heavy does a little more damge over all than Maj heavy.
well guys ive just stuck +4 dex -4 con on my toon whoops i mean char (wotever) and its good
faster swinging move faster im happy,,dunno wether he can take more of a beating but i,ll look into that
all is good atm i,ve also put +4 on my doom set,,,was tempted to go +4 on the dama but im scared :) and havent got 50kk for replacement
Most common and best *overall* tattoo setup for DA/HK are +4 Str -4 Con, +4 Dex -4 Con, +4 Wit -4 Int. Get focus sword for pve, some random cheap C grade HP weapon for raid bosses and switch between sword/bow in pvp depending on situation. I still have over 10k HP and 3k pdef (no UD) with hp weapon fully buffed which is by far more than enough to tank any raid boss. http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/8925/pdefhpgq6.jpg

that sounds like a good setup,,i must make a note of that,, ;)
atm with just +4 dex -4 con its realy made a difference ,,with the panther up we are hitting hard :)
...shame you didnt post earlier i just sold my old yaksa mace health +3 quite cheap aswell
And +4 STR, you want to level after all, HP isn't important as long as it's > 0
depending on if he has a full time buffer/healer and uses the cat. If you have buffs and use the cat, then i would not recommend a +4 str tat until you can wear majestic plate. The cat will do your damage you are less likely to get stunned. The best hunting spots for a DA and cat have a lot of mobs that stun.
I'm a +4 STR -4 CON in a Doom set. At first I was a bit scared of minimizing my CON but since I mainly solo (w/cat) my HP is really irrelevant. Especially with the addition of herbs.
I put my tats at lvl 55 and with a +3 focus damascus my crits hit about 30+ points of damage. Really not bad at all.
I still can't recover agro from some DD even with my crits all the time, but crits + hate should do the job.

Except if they can reduce the number of times they cast hate, they drastically increase their MP efficiency.
Further, apart from raid bosses and PvP, your HP/CP pools are pretty much irrelevant. Assuming your healers don't suck, as long as they can heal more HP/sec than you're taking in DPS you're fine. The only real PvE exceptions are if you're trying to use risk weapon SAs or skills that require below a certain % HP, where you might be quite close to death on a small HP pool.
Yeah - I wasn't saying through damage alone. It's just that a tank in doom with an AoBA (or DC with an Elysian) has to hate - and a good damage dealing tank roots to pull and won't need much hate beyond that.
Tanks are so protective of their CON... even when they are just XPing 99.999% of the time.. *******!
Be a man! Hit things! And +STR give more DPS than +DEX.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but for a DA with cat +4 dex does more DPS than a +4 str tat. If you want i can give you the stats on this as I have tried both and have documentation to support it. The added crits does more DPS than the added reg ular damge. :)
hello again,,,
i cant remember excatly my tat setup as im not in game with the DA atm but i do know that i have got -8con on him
now i dont know if its me being paranoid or what but ive noticed in FP the shamen dudes (them ones you hit and they turn into a wolf or summit) just of the tp point are stunning me a hell of a lot,,a lot more then i ever can remember them doing,,and yesterday i heard in genral chat someone mention they keep gatting stun and reply was "low con"
so looks like i may have wasted a ton of adena,,,can someone confirm low con=high stun rate
would it help if u new my full tats setup like i said i have -8con on a DA lvl56
so looks like i may have wasted a ton of adena,,,can someone confirm low con=high stun rate
it does but only really in pvp
mob stun rate is so freakishly high that it doesnt really matter what your stats are or what resist you have
trust me +str = faster kills = less stuns
screw con thats for the pvp classes
