I was thinking of an Orc Titan, but in all honesty I know 0 about the classes in this game, it seems there are so many different variations of melee classes, I am utterly confused.
So in short, I hate caster classes, I would like to know how the melee classes stand up against casters and ranged in PvP. And between the races, which is the best melee class? Orc titans, human gladiators? What is the difference between them? I don't see how they can have as many classes as they do.. so I need some insight ><
Yeh I know it will not happen till I am higher, I just don't want to roll the wrong class and waste my time,if I spent my whole time making a melee character, I would be severely ****** if it is as overpowered as you say with the ranged classes
You will have some PvP as you level up, but the majority of PvP is going on for peeps that are in the 70+ range.
More than likely, that's at least 2 chronicles away for you. Interlude, and whatever comes after it.
NCSoft changes the game in every chronicle, and sometimes they change it alot. I have seen them nerf the best PvP class in the game into absolute worthlessness.
With that in mind, I encourage you to choose a class you think you will enjoy playing. If you choose the hot PvP class for this chronicle, you may be extremely ****** off when you get into your prime and find out they are nerfing your class.
Now then.. Melee's are overdue for some love. As it stands, range>all. When you look at melee for PvP quality...
High level Gladiators and Tyrants are pretty **** fierce. A well played Destroyer can lay the smackdown, but they're a hard class to play for most, and you don't see alot of them. If you want kills, you're best off with Gladi or Tyrant for melee.
If you are the type who wants to see your team win, I might encourage a tank class. They won't get alot of kills, but a well played tank in a melee group can give his team the win. This is going to be even more pronounced in Interlude. (at least that's what it looks like right now..)
Ah I see Titan is the next class transfer after destroyer, is there a reason when you say destroyers are ya know good but not Titans as in it is not a good idea to do the class transfer? I am kinda confused on the way you are saying it
I will add that Destroyers are incredibly F U N to play and if played well can be great money makers [they are awesome at seeding in the catacombs and if you start at level 20 you will easily be able to make enough to keep in top gear]. Don't understimate how important fun is to reaching high level. For me, Destroyers are fun because there are so many ways you can play and so many cool skills [Frenzy, Guts, and Crush of Doom in particular]. Lots of posts talk about how crappy melee are in PvP. Well, there are many situations where melee can really shine. Mass PvP they can do well, particularly inside castles during siege. But the best and most fun place is in the dungeons. There are lots of small rooms and hallways with corners. It is easy for a melee to get up close to all the ranged classes in this type of environment and pound away! And nothing is more funny than to have a nuker or archer try to kite and run into a big room of aggro mobs :D
As a spellhowler I got tired of the fact that the game boiled down to: Push Hurricane hotkey, push Shadow flare hotkey, retarget on next mob, repeat. Sometimes I got to: Push Surr2wind hotkey, push Hurricane hotkey 5 times, retarget, repeat. And when I got bored it was: Push Body2Mind until at 1 HP. Target mob, Push Curse Death Link hotkey, retarget, repeat. Now don't get me wrong, I do like casters, but variety is not their strong suit.
Good luck. And try not to set your expectations so high. It will take some time to get to the 7x levels...

I'm using the words Titan and Destroyer interchangeably.. same thing either way.
People still mostly refer to the classes by their 40+ name, because, well, we're so used to it, and the skills you obtain between 40 and 74 are the defining skills of your class. Not until C4 did we have 3rd class changes.
I looked for the tyrant class and couldnt find it.
And since generally it looks like gladiator and Titan are similar where si the big differences in the classes? I see every race has a different class, no races with the same classes, does this force you to play a human if glads are alwyas better than titans or shillien knights? kinda weak if your almost forced to play a certain race because of the melee choices eh
There has been one constant in the last 5 chronicles. Much has changed, but remains the same. And that is a well played archer can still beat most classes, farm pretty decent, and destroy people in an assist train.
Only problem is they're dreadfully boring and eat money like mad.(Arrows+SS= : ( )
P.S. Don't roll a dagger class. All they're good for is FD, silent walk, and bot trains. And the first two aren't as good as they used to be.

Exactly, you can't be a spellhowler if you want to play a human.
However... with a few exceptions, when you get to lvl 75 you can have a subclass of "another race's" class. It starts at lvl 40, you change between sub class and main class in town.
So I have a destroyer Subclass (which is an Orc Class) but I can use my Dark Elf as the Destroyer.
And a good time was had by all.
Also, remember, some classes are better than others in certain pvp situations. Get a melee in a close quartered area and then see some of your mages go down.
and FYI pvp doesnt take place unless you are lvl 75 or more. before that, you are just defending yourself against a wave of 75+ players.
anyone that tells you otherwise isnt playing official servers.
Really now? I've gotten 6 pvps on TI from people trying to gank my hunting spot from lvls 14 - 17 , one in EG on New Year's Eve from someone who also tried to KS my mobs at level 31, and another lastnight from someone who tried taking out my wife's alt at Deathpass...he got mad cause her name was similar to his...I was level 36 at the time.
And this all in a 3 week period on Bartz since I rerolled. Them newbies are firecrackers I tell ya! Or at least they think they are. :p Guess they got tired of WoW's crap PvP.
hmm well my question is, is there a -huge- difference between the melee classes between races? I know what your saying is if I wanted to be an orc titan first i can become an orc glad after i get to 75 etc, but I want to play the most useful -overall- melee class in pvp, and I am having a hard time choosing which because there is so many different ones

Ok...
Daggers do the most damage for the most part. I have no idea as to how they compare when fighting a tank. I can't say much else regarding daggers, others will have to fill in.
Orcs
Tyrant (fist weapons), very fast smaller chunks of damage... A lot of skills.
Destroyer (very large sword, a lot of hit points, very slow, large swaths of damage
Dark Elf
Blade Dancer, Good solid melee class but shines as a party buffer, could mean the difference between winning at pvp or "having a bad time".
Shilien Knight, High damage for a tank, a lot of spells, many skills, low hitpoints for a tank
Light Elf
Sword Singer - Light elf version of Blade Dancer (dark elf) but different buffs and doesn't have to use two swords. Light elves are fast by the way
Temple knight, supposed to be the most defensive tank in the game. Hard to level I hear as you need a clan that really wants/needs to use you.
Human
Paladin - Have no clue. do a search on Paladin
Dark Avenger has a cat that looks "Tony"... other than that no clue
I think you will have to do a bit of searching in order to get more complete answers.
If you are looking for an all around pvp melee that will do very well then choose one of the dagger classes. There is a library on this site that will help a bit. But only a bit.
For instance:
"The fighter class relies on physical strength in combat " Do they now? :)
The Dark Elf explanation at least helps a bit where it mentions they use dark magic.
One last question, sicne you can play another class when you get 75 and do the quest I was looking at what races could do other races classes, but they are the older names, like tyrant was there etc, soo I clicked destroyer and it greyed out some, does that mena Titan is same in which classes it can get as a subclass?

Exactly.
it uses the 2nd class change names. Nothing changes when you hit the 3rd class change except when you cough up a lung because you realize your skills cost 10 million skill points each.
But I digress
Essentially pick the 2nd class that is associated with your race on that chart of theirs and anything that is not greyed out you can pick.
Remember, Dark Elves can't pick Light Elf classes and Vice Versa.
Also, I would search around a bit. There are a lot of threads with some very in depth information that will help you make up your mind.
One leads into the next with the forth name being the final evolution of that particular branch. All that forth name means is a stronger version of what you are. A titan is nothing more then a stronger destroyer. As for subbing, yes some classes will be restricted. For the destroyer/titan it will only be the two classes that NCSoft has refered to as the siege classes. Those being the overlord and warsmith. Why they did this no one really knows, but those are the only two classes that can not be a sub-class to ANYONE.
no. go into the Races,Classes and Skills tab in the index to the left of this page. look at each race's progression you will notice that ONE class may do ONE 3rd class change. and only that specific one. a Paladin may NOT become a Soultaker.
subclassing is for those who no longer desire to play their main class but because of their extreme stature in the game, dont want to level a class 1-40. you start at level 40 in the class of your choice (the greyed out classes notwithstanding) with the complete level 1-40 skill set and 0 sp. so say for example as a level 75 destroyer you want to switch classes, well you may switch to any of the non-greyed out classes and your stats will change, everything attributable to the race of the class (your tattoos will dissappear - reappear on your main class) and you will need new gear. the only thing that doesnt change is your name and original race.
so as a Titan, you could subclass an ABYSS WALKER and you would retain your orc body but embrace the statistics and attributes of a Darkelf for the purposes of the class. you return to level 40, with all the skills and youre ready to equip yourself and begin to play using only the skillset of an abysswalker.
Also, it might be helpful t mention that the only way to Become a Noblesse and thus be eligible for those benefits as well as compete in the Olympiad is to get one subclass to lvl 75 and then do a quest to become Noblesse.
subclassing is for those who no longer desire to play their main class but because of their extreme stature in the game, dont want to level a class 1-40.
Or for those who want to become nobles and/or heroes later on.
EDIT: Sovrath beat me, and expressed it so much better

who would want to do such an extremely stupid thing?
the extreme uberdom, the neverending glowbugness, the no-drop exclusive weapons, the buy-free-enchant-scrolls-with-points-not-even-earned ness, its tridiculous how much is handed to you free as a hero.
if your got through the oly without all that, why should you need it? there isnt anyone around who could match you after that.
heros all = noob. no if's and's or but's about it. you DONT need heroes to win a siege. you DONT need heroes to win a war. you DONT need heroes then, really, at all.

I just want to say that if I ever was able to become a Hero I would never have Hero chat on.
Hey sov quick question, I saw you were on Hindimeth server, I was told that the if the server doesnt think an alliance deserves their castle the entire server will take/siege it from them?
Hey sov quick question, I saw you were on Hindimeth server, I was told that the if the server doesnt think an alliance deserves their castle the entire server will take/siege it from them?
Well, I said that. And that is "sort of" true on Hindemith.
We have had several alliances that "right or wrong" seemed to have ****** off the server. So what has happened "right or wrong" is that the other clans/alliances of the server essentially gathered and removed them.
It takes quite a bit for the server to do this but on Hindemith this has happened several times. One of the best sieges I ever attended (on the losing side :) ) was one of these "server justice" sieges.
However, in no way is this "written in stone" or anything.
I'd like to point out that a Destroyer has 2 weapon options. 2handed sword or a Polearm. A polearm allows you to fight multiple foes at once and combined with frenzy and guts can be some jawdropping exp.
As well a dagger is much faster and has the chance to 1shot their opponents with the Lethal Strike effect except their HP is generally lower while Destroyer has the highest HP in the game.
Gladiators are far different than a Destroyer. They use different weapons first of all and Gladiators have some mediocre ranged attacks and is more similar to the Tyrant.
Currently most subclasses being done either end up being Necromancer (nuker), Hawkeye (archer) or Destroyer (melee) and I see the odd dagger subclass.
Also a dagger isn't bad with a bow, especially in S grade and 78+ when PW/AW get increased critical power from behind.
ranged till 76 plus then glad or da. these 2 classes at 76 plus own everyone. so if you in for the long haul to lvl 76 plus then go GLAD or DA. but you be pwned alot till you get there...

So destroyer seems to be the more popular melee class then? And would it be a -good- idea to level a ranged class first then go for melee as your first sub? I mean I was planning on making a archer for my sub anyway, but if it wil make things easier me rolling an archer to begin with then eh might as well

To be honest, I wouldn't really worry about subclasses yet.
Find a main class that you like enough to get to level 75.
Among melees I think Destroyers are the most common coming about in this chronicle. But it always changes. First it was daggers then it was Gladiators and now it is Destroyers. The only drawback to a Destroyer is they are a slow melee class but I believe this was improved since they added a buff to Destroyers that could increase their speed temporarily but they also reduced the effect of Frenzy on bows.
I wouldn't plan out your subclass just yet either. From a Destroyer you can subclass anything but the Overlord/Warsmith that cannot be subbed.
As well I'd really just go with what you like playing no matter how powerful you are. I admit C3 wanted me to /suicide my Plainswalker but I've always liked the rogue melee classes. Things change and it won't be C5 by the time you get to 75 on your Destroyer unless you 2box a healer and pull 5-6 rooms in a Catacomb everyday with a polearm.
(quickreply)
PvP as a melee class against any other class is 100% about run speed. an SR (fastest archer) will ALWAYS kill a destroyer, because they can outrun them AND outrange them. it may take them 30 minutes to burn through all your cp pots, but if they know what they are doing the destroyer wil never get in 1 hit in all that time. you said you want to kill nukers, they can outrange you but not outrun you. in C4 destroyer and tyrant got zealot (low-hp active skill that increases run speed and effects criticals), which made them godlike compared to other melee (it still takes some really massively over-enchanted gear to kill a nuker with a melee). now in C6 gladiator gets a dash skill that they can use at full hp, and lasts longer than zealot. this single skill makes gladiator better than destroyer in 1vs1 PvP because the gladiator can kite the destroyer. thus, destroyer in interlude will not be a FoTM PvP class, not that they truely ever were. for class comparison, gladitor can use duals or blunts, destroyer can use swords, blunts, and poles. destroyers get active low-hp skills, gladiators get passive low hp skills. gladiator wears heavy armor (good versus archers) and tyrant wears light armor (some sets are good versus mages due to armor bonus, but also not too bad versus archers if you can get the set to +6). destroyer has more hp than tyrant which has more hp than gladiator. more hp means it takes more nukes to bring you down. from your original post, id say you would like playing a tyrant. fastest run speed of any melee, high hp, high damage output. nightmare leather armor+6, dragon grinders+health, some ++ jewels, and a whole lotta cp pots.
