Game Guard Protection

Realistically just what are we being protected from? The purpose of GG is to prevent hacks from being run, but just what are they.

wall hacks, speed hacks, god mode hacks ???

Are we being protected from things that don't exist in the game?

We aren't playing a first person shooter here.....
They won't tell us what GameGuard is protecting us from. They'll just say they can't go into specifics because they don't want cheaters having an edge. :)

IMO GameGuard only protects against having a secure system and a stable game. It does nothing useful and only creates problems. Nearly the entire NA and Euro playerbase thinks that GameGuard is useless and do not want it. I would gladly pay for the expansions of this game if it would help pay for a license for something better. By better, I mean something thats not a worthless pile of coded crap like GameGuard.
We all know that....

But i mean just what type of **** does it stop....

Speed, Wall, God hacks????

This is after all a MMORPG not a FPS
It is supposed to stop keyloggers mostly. It doesn't, however, stop the 3rd party program that displays MP/HP/CP of your target.
afaik it does a decent job of stopping keyloggers
Although interestingly enough, if you wanted you can code a keylogger that not only gets past GG, but can actually USE GG to hide itself from your other security tools. That's the major security hole with GG, ANY application that knows GG is running on a system can use GG to hide itself/escalate its own privelages.

And yes, there used to be speedhacks (though I don't think they actually worked so much as desynched the user from the server).
according to nProtect (http://eng.nprotect.com/nprotect_gameguard.htm)

* Malicious code diagnosis and blocking

* Blocks Auto-mouse and Macro program

* Blocks access and manipulation attempts to the game client

* Self protection of security module

* Detects Speed ****

* Optimized CPU occupancy rate

So that's what it's supposed to do....
Figured i'd just post the reference.

well it sucks at alot of that tbh
The question is....

Is it protecting us from nonexistent things....

hard to say
maybe if we didnt have it we'd see alot more of that stuff ive never seen
yeah a similar question would be

If a tree falls and no one is around to hear it, would it make a sound.

If gameguard wasn't here, would our PC's be ovverrun with different kinds of malicious code that would make it dance the tango de la morte.

It's a tough call. Only way to know would to have any kind of comparison of the client without GG in the present time and with GG in the present time. On different operating systems with different set ups.

Hacks ftw!

GG is only "active" when a GG using game is started...thus your PC is entirely free to be infested/infected with trojans/keyloggers/virii at any other time.

If your at least halfway educated, you should never get them. In which case GG is unnecessary. If not, having GG won't really change anything either. (You might avoid some keyloggers....unless they are specifically made to work with/around GG.)

You need to understand this. L2 in Korea is still primarily played at NetCafe's. *THIS IS CRUCIAL TO UNDERSTANDING WHY L2 IS THE WAY IT IS!*

(Not just the interface, but also large parts of the design itself.)

GG is the 'security middleman' for Korean players. Kr game companies like/use it because it reduces their 'liability' for account misuse/hacking. Kr NetCafe operators like it for the same reasons. (GG/nProtect is basically used like rent-a-cop security is in the US....)
I never looked at it that way.....

It is the perfect thing to use then, if only it can be more stable. :)

Depends on what you define as "malicious code". I have a theory about what GameGuard's role is in something that the Developers can't talk about openly. If you want to know what I'm thinking, send me a PM.
lol i know, i was just making a general joke about what most people think about gameguard.

So lets try it this way

If we didn't have gameguard, and we started our L2 client, would or PC's decide to eat our proverbial souls(this being of course us making an assumption there *IS* a soul) though the use of the evil haxors of the world?

Well, it wasn't before GameGuard was added so there's your answers.

Plus, *I* am responsible for my computer security.
From what PainAmplifier posted.....

It breaks down like this.

GameGuard isn't needed in any market other then Korea. We are paying for the insecurity of the Korean player base. :) :)

I was here way back in C1-2 before GG as added. After GG was added become the Errors. I never had a issue in C1-2.

Most of my errors are GG related.

it hasn't worked sense it was brought into the game, they should look for a new program for Game security.
I remember an interview with the dude that used to run NCNA shortly after GameGuard was released. He was demoing the game to the interviewer and showed how "choke points are no longer controlled by red players" because of GameGuard. You can't make this stuff up...
Yeah he was talking about how bots would clog the roads and presented an obstacle to navigation, and how they would attack players as well as monsters indiscriminantly.

I laughed at that so hard I thought I'd rupture my spleen.
GG dosent block macro programs...

But if you also understand the devestating effects of kernel mode keyloggers GG just seems all the more futile.

Don't even have to be that tech savvy, you can just go buy a piece of hardware that connects between the PS/2 keyboards and the machines they're hooked up to. Place that behind the tower and the unlucky gamer may never even notice.

GG does help, not denying that, just seems like NProtect is always one step behind. :(
