Hey Everyone! My name is David, and I am very new to not only Lineage II but also to MMORPGs in general. I am conducting an Honors Research Project for my college Sociology course this semester concerning the dynamics, conventions, and correlations between digital societies and real life societies.
I have chosen to become a participant in my studies by experiencing the society of a MMORPG for myself. I am looking to use Lineage II due to its construction, its clan system, and its diverse international population. I trying to decide which server, and beyond that, which clan to use for my study, and I'd love some feedback!
If you have any questions, comments, or a desire to participate in the study yourself, please respond here or email [email protected] for more details. Thanks so much for your time!
HOLY [censored]!! That is a sweet project. I might have done better in school with projects like that! But I have to tell you. Once your hooked on L2 your grades are going to suffer. ;)
If you want to be like Jane Goodall you couldn't do better than spend some time with the chimps on Hindemith or Gustin.
Good examples of primate dominance behaviours.
I dunno what you're looking for, but this kind of project seems like it would take longer than a semester.
With a mature MMO like L2, I think it will take that long to work your way into the actual society. Certainly, you will get a view of the edges of L2's culture, but to actually get into it, hard to say.
You'll find lots of useful informations here : Daedalus Project by Nick Yee (http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus).
Also lots of people now do researches on MMORPG sociology in their studies, so maybe you can find something on the net.

Hey Jane Goodall is an Anthropologist not a Sociologist...she wouldn't be studying Gorillas otherwise ;)

Heh, mature MMO.. That's a good one.
The OP could have picked a better game, to be honest, I've yet to see one where cheating (you know, buying stuff from ebay or using unmentionable-outside-certain-thread programs) is as rampant as in L2. I suppose it's an excercise into human nature, but rather one-sided as it is.
What a varied response! Very interesting. I'll keep that all in mind. This research may seem daunting, but afterall...I am me. Who else could manage it? It's no big for me though. Thanks for all the response though! Initial buzz is important.
Chapter 1:
Boil everyone down to their most raw human nature to win/dominate someone else, add the fact people will DO ANYTHING to win/dominate by adding 180 pounds of rule breaking gusto and you have the avarage L2 player.
Also add to that pot the very small pinch of non-rule breaking people. They are hard to find, and to be honest most if not all people have broken the EULA for the game. This fact gives L2 its bitter taste.
Take care
Balis
p.s. Sieghardt is a good server to try. Also don't forget to check out all the fan forum sites, one of the more drama filled ones were you see the full splender on how humans treat each other, check out "L2Blah"
Well, of course, I would suggest Lionna Server. Lots of shifting, changing clan environments, and easy to get into the politics at a young "age." Love my Lionna! And definitely there is an interesting bunch here.
I have a suggestion though: Go down the World Discussion threads of this forum for each server. You'll get a good idea of the climate of each server that way.
