Hello all, I am new to L2 and just had some very noob questions that I am having a hard time finding the answers to.
1. How exactly does PvP work, is anyone allowed to attack anyone, or is it faction based?
2. I am curently sitting at lv 10 and was just curious as to whether it is just basically a big grind fest to get to the higher levels to participate in the more notable events within the game?
3. Crafting, is the only way to get the mats needed for a recipe through random drops?
4. Are there really any guilds out there looking for players that are not maxed out level wise?

yes, you can attack anyone you want except in cities. naturally you dont' want to attack people in your own clan or alliance.
2. I am curently sitting at lv 10 and was just curious as to whether it is just basically a big grind fest to get to the higher levels to participate in the more notable events within the game?
That's a hard question. The game is about power so people who are interested in higher lvl pvp or higher lvl raidbosses don't sit around doing nothing. They try to lvl and build their power.
Having said that you will find people who are more casual or who like to roleplay and who don't feel the need to rush to higher lvls.
3. Crafting, is the only way to get the mats needed for a recipe through random drops?
Not sure what you are asking here. Only Dwarves can craft weapons and armor, etc. Other players have a common craft ability that allows you to craft things such as potions or hair pins, etc.
4. Are there really any guilds out there looking for players that are not maxed out level wise?
Yes! There is an academy system that gives clans benefits by inviting lower lvl players who are interested in leveling to the second class change. just as around about the clans and alliances to see who might fit what you are interested in. Keep in mind, unlike other games, clans matter. They are not just chat rooms while you do quests (*shivers at the thought of doing an L2 quest). they will have your back, help you level or gather mats or complete class change quests.

kill anyone you want even your own clan

all major clans want low lvls
unfortunately after lvl 40 you should prolly go join a smaller clan but dont forget to get some cool stuff from the clan in exchange for rep points
3. Crafting, is the only way to get the mats needed for a recipe through random drops?
there are 2 types of dwarfs
1 crafts and the other gathers mats
you are lvl 10 so dont craft anything untill at least 40+ and dont sell mats until you know what they are really worth
4. Are there really any guilds out there looking for players that are not maxed out level wise?
oops answered they wrong question for number 2
yes its pretty much a big grind fest to get to lvl 70+ at least but theres lots of stuff to do along the way if you choose
Thanks for the quick replies and sorry for some of my questions being hard to understand. Back to the crafting question, I started a Dwarf who is now sitting at 13, I trained in the skills Spoil and Sweeper, are using those two skills the primary way to get mats for crafting recipies? I dont think I will start crafting yet, just stock pile any mats I may come across, unless I need to craft for a quest, but getting/finding mats has been a bit troublesome. Again, thanks for your responses.
yeah spoil and sweep is how the gathering side of dwarfs get mats
those classes are called scavenger - bounty hunter - fortune seeker
you first use spoil on a mob
if it doesnt say "failed to spoil mob x" or something similar then it worked
when the mob dies if it flashes blue then you should sweep it for your reward
different mobs spoil different stuff and just because you spoil a mob doesnt mean you will get a sweep each spoilable item has a % chance, you might get 3 items you might get none
once again i advise you not to craft anything until at least 40+ (prolly more like 52+)
odds are you will lose money if you do so

You can also use manor sistem to get high quantities of specific matereals. Try searching for it in these forums, or just reading the explanation text on the manor managers in any town. You can't get any mats at any level, but my dwarf, for example gets a choise of 10-if not 20 different mats to manor for (different eficiency to do different ones, of course).
To add on the open pvp part. Not all skills can be used on not "flaged" (people who fought back and their name turned purple) or clan warred people. Generaly the skills that do not give any damage at a start (sleep, curses, poisons ets) can not be used on players that dont meet these conditions.
I'm going to expand a little on Sov's Post (you did well)

Yes, But unlike other MMO's like WoW you really don't gain anything from PvP (unless your clan is in a war). Yes your counter for it goes up but for the most part people only pvp people who stole their hunting ground or have a grudge against.

Notably the Best Way to lvl up to your 40's is to find a low lvl group of friends/clannies and go kill raidbosses. This can distract from the grind.
Until lvl 50 the xp curve is linear, after that it becomes exponeitial.

Manor, drops, spoils. It is also possible to go buy your mats on the open market (players who have mats and don't need em sell them in giran).
4. Are there really any guilds out there looking for players that are not maxed out level wise?
Once again, thanks for all the responses, I know saying this is redundent, but ppl should be thanked for helping others out. I am currently on Hindemith. Another question, what is this Manor that is being refered too, is it a plot of land or some such thing? Again, sorry for the noobness, I am a former WoW player and this is just so very different from that MMO. Thanks again :)
the manor is a system for gathering crafting amterials much like wow's "find mine" or "find plant" gathering skills. what you do is talk to the manor manager in the town of your choice; buy a harvester and some seeds appropriate for your level range (seeds all ahve levels, find the one type of seed that your level is in between - its described right on the seed). place the seed on your hotbar, along with the harvester, and go hunt mobs with white names. use the seed first, before you kill it, then start attacking. when the mob is dead, use the harvester. you will see a message like "you have earned 1(up to 5) [something - depending on the seed]"
take all those [somethings] we call them fruits, and go back to the manor manager, and "tally your current crops" and he will give you an amount of materials based on the number and type of fruit you brought in.
you can rpeview your crop rewards in the manor manager's dialogue box. just ask him "view the current crop status" and the seeds and rewards for the crops will be indexed for you by type.
try it once, its a strange process for a wow'er but you will grow to appreciate how fast your money collects; most materials given out by the manor range in price (in the player's shops in Giran town) from 500 adena all the way to 50k adena.
That helps a ton guys, thanks so much. Should I seed at all while in the lower levels if I am not going to craft anything till around 40, a couple of replies in this post suggest not to craft anything until that level.
Thanks again

Most people who use the manor, do so to make money not to use the materials themselves. (Basically, they gather the materials they get from the manor and sell them in Giran to those who are have are doing the actual crafting. So yes, using the manor is often worthwhile even if *you* don't plan to make anything by or for yourself. You would be selling the materials to those who do. (This is where your profit is mostly coming from.)
My advice is to read the guides and study the system before jumping in headfirst. Not every material is in high demand, and the market for each material has it's ups and downs. Add this to the fact that each seed can only return 1 (of 2) materials (set by the manor lord) means that you can be stuck with materials that sell fairly slowly or for much less profit than others. And I guarantee you that the most profitable seeds/fruits are heavily contested and will be hard to 'break into'.
Also keep in mind that each seed has it's own success rate as well as a seperate rate of return. (Modifiable based on Mob HP/XP multipliers)
And lastly, what may be a good manor one week could be absolute crap the next. aka Everytime the castle changes hands by extension so does the manor lord. Also not every manor lord cares or knows enough to setup a manor that is good for the manorees...and some go out of their way to squeeze every perceived adena out of the farmers side of the manor. (Overpriced seeds, underpriced buybacks.)
level 12-28 can be a very profitable span if you manor the whole time. stick to red or chilly codas depending on what has a higher buyback price (this will depend on your server). note that you should not exchange fruits unless you have at least 200 of them to trade becasue you might not get anything back (assume, for simplicity sake, that the system rounds down).
