I got a sorcy and when I hit aura flare a buff icon with the description of the spell appears next ot my buffs.. What is this ? And what is the aura flare nerf everyone cries about? I am in this game for a few months only so i dont know the whole story of it :)
It temporarily reduces your damage - I'm not sure if it's PvP only or not though. Basically, try only to use auraflare as a finisher and don't worry about it. :p
It should only reduce for PVP, can't say I've really checked my mdef in PVE after using it though. It was to nerf sps/sorc from owning the crap out of oh, everyone, in pvp.
I prefer to use the aura bolt because it's cheaper for when you need to bump off just a LITTLE hp.

some history; some warriors etc used to complain that nukers were too powerful to counter at close range because auraflare was so fast casting and hit just as hard as prominence. so around c3 a debuff came in, that lowered your Matk after casting auraflare but only during pvp. aura bolt, aura burn were both unaffected and remain pretty dang useful spells in arena play.
the debuff itself only lowers matk (tested by yours truly) but at that by a phenominal amount. vs an high mdef class ( WC/OL/SPS/PP ) i hit for nearly 50% less damage and sometimes 1 damage. vs high pdef (non ud'd classes) i can still do valid damage but if im gonna kill someone like that, it will be a long fight despite the fast cast speed.
