What the hell does charm do??? It either never works or I use it wrong...please...enlighten me
Charm makes you feel like all your other skills are great because they actually do something. :o
Its the opposite of hate... you can't un-aggro a mob from yourself unless someone else has also got some amount of aggro from the same mob.. if ya know what I mean. So in short... what maline said :p
It.. might lower the aggro you've generated with a mob and make it attack someone else hitting it other than attacking you...

... pretty useless skill, like most on the SwS tree.

rofl
correct
It is in fact a waste of sp
I've seen several cases where an elf could have saved his life with Charm
In theory, it is suppose to unagro a mob.

Works a little better in a party with a melee/tank to get the mob off you and on to someone else, not always the tank.
There's another use for charm, beyond having a mob turn away from you, that I've seen used in the past. An archer, not wanting to pull two social mobs standing together, first casts charm on one, then shoots the other, and only the second one aggroed him. In this day and age of quad-boxed characters with a healer legion following, I doubt it's really all that useful, but back when we actually played the healers it was a nice thing to do.
i wanna go back to those days of actual grouping... sometimes boxing 2 accounts is ok, some people play both characters live in parties ( like me) but NC sofl seriously needs to do something about group exp :(
boxing kill partys, whether it's 2-boxing or 10-boxing.
Back to the topic : Charm reduces the aggro of a mob, but never to 0 nor can it negate the aggro. It's not Peace.
It's good when someone else is hitting the same mob and you want to give him the aggro (because you're a bad tank).

We couldn't get most of our groups off the ground without boxing - the clan is too small.

Still killing?
I doubt that you couldn't. I've even seen a Warlord + Paladin duo in our clan :D
I'm not saying we couldn't get a group off the ground - just not where we want to be, at the pace we want to be. Not a group, in fact, that is worth being in over soloing in a herb drop place. ;]
Ah, of course, if you want to be in Antaras Nest... :)
If your clan is too small atm, invite ppl out of your clan, it also helps to meet new people and maybe future clannies.

As far as I know, since C4 Peace and Charm work the same way and Peace has similar descriptions

Peace:
Puts opponent's mind at peace. Desire to attack is decreased.

Charm:
Charms the enemy to decrease its desire to attack player. Power X.

Generally Peace-like abilities decrease hate level of monster toward character using the skill. As soon as hate level toward you becomes lower than toward someone else, mob changes target.

It is possible to decrease mobs hate level down to zero, in wich case you are removed from mob's hate list. Thoough mob will reaggro instantly if you are in its aggr raiuds and mob is in agressive mode at the moment of charm usage.
For peaceful mobs you can simply spam charm (preferrably with bsps charged) and sooner or later it will forget about you.
For agressive mobs you have to neutralise agressive state before you finish charming. There are three ways to do so:
1) You or someone else can use agressive neutralising skill/spell like Veil or Requiem.
2) Aquire some sort of silent move (Silent move, Shadow dance, Stealth)
3) Move mob out of its spawn territory. For some reason mobs are not agro when they are not on their spawn territory. For example, in catacombs all corridors are not spawn territories, so you can easily tow mob out of rom and charm in the corridor.

I have heard this same story before, and have certainly tried it myself without success. Perhaps the skill works differently for different classes? Or perhaps the server read the mobs as being out of their social aggro radius when they appeared to be standing close by. This would not surprise me, as my 2-box shows one character as much as 100 yards from the other, even though they're auto-following each other.

No, it isn't, and I've tested this with both those hyper-aggro orcs outside Dion, which are aggro, and their Shamans, which are not aggro.

Charm isn't exactly a spammable skill, as its cooldown timer is too high, but I stood there burning BSPS-B during my test, and the mobs never once stopped swinging. It didn't even slow down, so during these tests, there was never a moment when it ever lost aggro. The Shamans did their windstrike thing for awhile, and then closed to melee with their stick (I guess mobs can run out of mana)... but never did they stop attacking nor wander off, so I eventually just killed them.
I don't think either that the aggro can fully vanish only thanks to Charm. As I understand it, you can only decrease it to 0 but not remove it. In a similar way that a DoT will decrease your HP down to 0 without you dying.
