yeah tyrants own just not as much as other classes
they lvl fast but not as fast as other classes
their damage is done with attack speed as opposed to high damage output per hit so they are more expensive than other classes
That is true.. until Tyrants get to 68 where they should XP at below 60% HP for massive increase in damage. Even better if they can manage to stay under 30% HP, not many classes can compete with Zealot+Bison.
They are not played because they are not played - they are not a well known class, and they pick off really slowly on top of being generally 'unattractive' (although I still think orc girls are hot).

I absolutley love my Orc Monk --- can't wait till shes Tyrant. She's the 3rd toon I have tried and is the best experience yet--------BUT what can you expect when you start off in this game building an SE =perma paranoia-----I mean --a bugbear farts and your dead.
I really think that my monk is less costly than than my SO was ----- dss is so much cheaper --monk doesn't pop pots much and the gear was cheaper/the best gear is not compulsary =can do without. SO died much too---wanted to rename her Toast --death is pricey in L2. I really can't see the Tyrant being an adena burner --- but i've been wrong before.
I have not compared cost. But. The operating expenses for day-to-day play should be much cheaper for an SE. They should be grouping most of the time, primarily healing and buffing, and thus should not spend a lot on shots. Melees like Tyrants do use a lot of shots, and I keep hearing that Tyrants chew through shots faster than most melee classes. However. I have also heard they are fun to play, and people should play what they enjoy. (I am much like you, I tend to prefer classes that are robust and can take some hits and keep on truckin.)
