I have p4 3.2g, 2g kingston and 9600pro video card...not good but at least they are not the worst. but siege is still lagging like [Censored] even with 800x600 and lower detail.
i mean. how the hell people play siege ? Do I have to spend $2000 USD to purchase a new computer for this 4 years old online game ?
I have a P4 3 gig, with 2 gigs of RAM, and a Nvidia Gforce 6800 GT and I run sieges at full detail and I don't lag, even recording with fraps.
Do you turn off sounds? That helps me the most. Sometimes I have to turn off names too but not usually.
I have no idea what's going on with my computer.
I just formated it like 3 days ago so there shouldnt be any spyware to slow it down...maybe your video card is better than mine but that doesn't make my game jumps like screenshot...and my p4 3.2g > your p4 3.0g...and I even overclocked my video card to 30% more .
can you please tell me what mother board are u using and what windows version are you using...
I am using windows XP SP2 ...you think switch back to winxp sp1 would help ?
Mine is AMD 64 3000+, but only a Radeon 9550 and 1GB ram
Runs sweet. Slight lag when a lot of textures are all loaded at once, but that's normal. Resolution is set to 1024x w/pretty much all the bells and whistles except shadows turned up.
Your setup really isn't much different beyond the extra RAM. So I doubt your machine is underpowered. What OS? XP/Vista/2k/other? What do you have running in task manager? Did you try resetting L2's options? Do you have a lot of drive activity during the siege? Did you try windowed mode? You try all the various graphic options? Is HDR on or off?
...at this point it's really hard to tell anything except L2 *should* be running fine. Thus there should be something you can tweak or diagnose to find out why things are so choppy.

I am using windows SP2 and I turn off all applications before Running L2. and yes, I did tried to switch back and forth the window mode and full screen mode and yes, I did played with my video card's 3D settings but they didnt help at all...
I event ran a disc deframentation and spy sweep, didn't help at all either.
I am using 3m/s ATT/SBC DSL, which's currently the fastest speed in my area....
Well I am using 100/Mbit and still lag :p would say that showing names, and antialising is the things that bring me most lag. XP is good for Lineage, just dont upgrade to VISTA as it will eat you RAM memory for breakfest.
Just as 3 possible problems and solutions:
1) Make sure your swap file is consolidated into one contiguos space on the hard drive, and set it to the max that XP allows (type in 4096).
2) Do you have Windows Defender installed? If so, at the very least, turn off real-time shields. (Better yet, uninstall Defender and use Webroot or something else, if you aren't already, because the better paid antispyware products pick up a lot more problems than Windows Defender.)
3) Are you using Windows Defragmenter? If so, there are better defragmenters that do more. (I don't know if defragging your hard drive beyond what Windows will do will have much effect on your problem, but it's a possibility worth keeping in mind.)
9600pro video card...not good but at least they are not the worst. but siege is still lagging like [Censored] even with 800x600 and lower detail.
You wrote it yourself, LOL, ATI 9600 PRO is a reaaaaaaally old card now, and have really [censored] preformence towards the new ones. And yeah, I gotta say it's one of the worst now.
Upgrade your graphic card and you will see a massive improvement. I once had a card about with your preformence, I had 2-3 FPS on sieges, nowdays with my current setup i have 10-12 FPS when it's 100% crowded in front of me, or 20-30 when it's not.
I would turn off names first.
Go to task manager, how many unnecessary programs are running in the background? Play at full screen, not windowed. Then try "lower detail"
upgrade that v-card or atleast make sure you have the latest drivers for it.
If you get a new comp, DON'T get Vista. (If thats possible.) You'll want to search for threads on L2's compatibility with Vista. Microsoft seems to have forgotten the backward compatibility lessons learned in the 80's.
For those with the idea:
try "lower detail"
The lower detail or Alt+P setting is not good for sieges. It limits how far you can see people too much. You could end up being half dead before you even see your attacker. At best you be wondering who everyone is talking about because you can't see them.
I have an AMD Athon XP 3000+ running about 2GHz with 1 GB of RAM and a GeForce 6200 with 256 MB video RAM. Not the best out there, but I can run sieges fine. When sieging I set the following in Options:
Video tab:
Texture: Low
Modeling Detail: Low
Terrain Range: Wide
PC/NPC Range: Wide
PC/NPC Limit: High
Lower Detail: UNCHECKED
Reflections & Anti-Aliasing: None
Shadows, Ground Detail, GPU Animation and Texture Filter: unchecked
Shader and Weather Effects: None
Game tab:
Display: Player, Monsters, Other PCs: unchecked. (This will hide everyones names. Mouse over someone to see their name. I had problems crashing before I turned names off. It helps with lag too.)
Windows XP SP 2, not sure about the motherboard. A better video card will probably make a huge difference for you, it's really worth the money :)
Actually, the video card I have is a 'lesser' card than his and sieges don't stutter like his do.
BUT that does bring to mind one possibility. How much VRAM is on the video card? Do you have the 128MB model or the 256MB model? (Mine is a 256MB version) BEWARE! There are some models (NVidia does this more than ATI does, but both do it.) that have '128MB onboard', but list themselves as '256 MB total'. These 'half cards' use the AGP link to 'borrow' system RAM to make up for lower on-card RAM. And that is MUCH slower than having the full RAM on-board.
L2 is highly texture intensive, and if you have the 128MB model that may be the source of your siege slowdown.
For reference, here's the contents of my 'Options.ini' file in the L2/system directory. It's been a while now since I messed with these settings, so I might be due for some tweaking again now that this thread brings it to mind. =P

I just turn all the graphics to low instead of doing alt+p, so you can see farther still, and i always turn off texture filters, may look a bit more disgusting than usual but you should be able to play without much or even any lag, i have a 1.8 ghz procesor 512 ram and 128mb ati card, dont lag at all
how many fps are you all getting with 50 people + on the screen? or even how many fps are you getting in giran? i only get 10 even though my system seems to be very good (as i said before, 512 meg x1900 ati pci-express, 2 gig ram, amd 4200+ 64bit dual core cpu .... yet i still have trouble to play at seige with this amount of people, and i dont know if i should be lagging that much ??? what's the problem
it's a 256mb. I cant tell 100% for sure if it was a fake 256 or not but at least all my hardware detecters and ati control panel say it's 256mb.
To be honest, you really don't see this very often anymore. It used to be extremely popular with the cheaper pre-built systems or 'budget cards' when AGP was still fairly new through it's mid-life. By the time of the 9x Radeons it was starting to get rare anyway, but without knowing exactly how old or what manufacturer of the card you have it was still something to watch for. Most motherboards still have a setting for this under AGP though. (With PCI-Express on the newer MB's AGP is on it's way out..)
You can check the hardware RAM from your Catalyst Control Center though to be certain if you not sure what brand the board is.
Since your Video/RAM/CPU doesn't seem to be an issue, it is likely down to either a in-game setting or something running outside the game. If you ONLY have this problem during a siege, then I would think this was a in-game setting. Do the shops in Giran lag your fps like a siege does? (Beyond the load time anyway.) If not then it may likely be a driver/setting combo as shopping in giran won't have all the Lighting/GFX stuff running off (Spells/shots) that a siege would.
I'm still using the 05.13 Catalyst drivers, DirectX 9.0c, and .Net Framework 1.1
I'm curious what .Net version your running. I had some pretty nasty issues with Catalyst drivers NOT liking certain .Net/OS combinations in the past. (I KNOW I'm not running the 'latest' .net myself. =P )
I had a 9600 Pro, and sieges were like 3FPS...lol.
I upgraded to a 6600 GT (AGP) and that helped performance quite a bit. I am only running an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (1.9ghz) and 1GB dual channel DDR 400 ram. Still I get low FPS at certain points in sieges such as bottleneck points when tons of people cluster into an area, playing at 1024x768... I have to play with everything on low still, but that is partly due to my processor and only having one gig of memory.
3.2Ghz and 2GB of RAM is perfect for running a siege on practically full settings if you get a better video card. Go to ebay pick up a 6600 GT for $100 or less, or some equivalent card from Nvidia or ATI. Pay attention to the memory speed ratings and core clock ratings. Try to have your GPU clock above 450mhz and you memory clock above 850mhz.
The 9600 pro is a good card, especially just for playing L2 like normal such as grinding and whatnot. But for rendering hundreds of people your going to need a bit more help.
BTW when choosing a card the memory onboard is important, but beware that it isn't the most important. For example I had the 256MB 9600 pro card. The thing is, having the 128MB 6600GT is still utilizing its memory better. It depends on the card's architecture, and low end cards don't have very advanced architecture.
To simply, think of it like this. You build 256 phone booths, but only have 2 roads to the phone booths. Obviously people aren't going to be able to use those 256 phone booths efficiently, because there will be jammed traffic plus some booths will be too far off the road. In all reality you are probably only using about 80 phone booths. Now if you built 128 booths, but had 12 roads you will be able to use all 128 very simply, meaning you are actually using all the resources. Does that make sense or did I just confuse you?
Phone booth equal MB of memory. The 9600 represents the 256 booths with 2 roads where the 9600 GT represents the 128 booths with 12 roads.
So basically the 9600 has 256MB worth of silicon, but can't use all of it. Companies do this to make their cards sound better, when they really aren't because people think that the amount of memory is the most important thing on a card. Also pay attention to the type of memory, DDR GDDR2(3) whatever... GDDR2 is better than DDR and GDDR3 is better than both.
Remember that just because a card only has 4/8 pixel pipelines, dosent mean you cant unlock the additional pipelines, especially if its a GS/etc card.
Thats not a garuntee however, some do, some dont. Do a google on your video card to find out if you can unlock the extra pipelines/shaders/etc.
It also voids your warrenty (if you mention it..) so sshhh.
Important things to look at are obviously if your buying a cheaper card, can you unlock all of the stuff the company disabled to make it cheaper. How fast is the memory, how fast is the GPU frequency, etc.
Anything (at this point) above $149 will run L2 fine provided your system isnt having a bottle-neck in another area. (HD, CPU, Ram, PSU, etc)
A brand new system could run you as cheap as $600-700 if you built it yourself and still run L2 40-50FPS in a siege. Bump it up to 1K and you can easily do 80+FPS without breaking a sweat.

I have no problem at all when I was just grinding or just walking around even with two boxed...*** happens when it comes to a siege.
are you talking about siege or simply just single-player activities ?
today I brought home a x1950 pro 256mb from best buy and YAY !! my FPS gone up to 50+ FPS in my CH which it used to be only 20ish with my 9600pro. but here comes the question: WHY THERE IS NO FPS IMPROVEMENT AT ALL IN GRIAN?? is was 7-9 and it is still 7-9 with the new card.
you think it has something to do with my old school 7 year-old 19" flat screen monitor ?

My stock Rig is a 128 MB 9800 Pro,AMD 2400+, 1 gig DDR RAM(PC2100 I think, its pretty old). I can run most sieges with little to no lag when I play with graphics. I lower everyting except the NPC/PC draw Distance, and leave texture filter ON. I do have most of my component running a little higher than stock, and need a box fan blowing on the case with both sides open to keep the system cool in rough situations, but it works well.
