It seriously made me rethink some of my upcoming vacation time!
What's a vacation?
When you stop beating up Antelope and share a drink with some clanmates.

I'm glad my parents never sent me to an internet addiction camp. I think that would be unfair on the other kids.
im in for one of those over narch break (not the dieing the all-out gaming)

Since I don't have clanmates, I play my new sorc when I'm not beating up antelope.
Internet addiction...yeah there are definately some of those here in L2...
There's no addiction, neither for internet or for gaming.
People loose their time playing checks, trainspotting or riding a bike. That may causes them school failure, loss of social life etc, but when it comes to internet it's "omg addiction!!!111".
If you use internet or online gaming to flee reality and responsabilities, you have a mental disorder, often depression. Saying it's addiction only makes you flee more your responsabilities, like it's not your fault. There's no element in any game forcing you to spend more time than reasonnable for your family and civil duties. It can't be compared to drugs. Drugs get everyone addict. Internet and online gaming only affect a part of the population. The major part can perfectly manage their time between each activities. Of course the fact that internet is accessible at every second increases the effect on people who have problems.
And contrary to popular belief, online gaming is not cut out from social life. MMORPGs are social, not offline games. Spending time playing Oblivion is antisocial. Alas internet is pretty new and a lot of doctors and psychiatrist are alarmed when you speak about internet and give you a questionnaire for drug addiction detection. Whatever. You may not feel anything pushing you to play more (even for hardcore leveling games) during years, and suddenly fall in the trap. Or the contrary, spend too much time in the beginning and feel "cured" a while after. It's not physiological, it's not the game. It's you.
Sometimes we feel well, other times we need a hug! Let's not confuse depression with addiction.
So mental disorders are 'your own fault' now?

I strongly believe that a healthy and sensible person can sense the addiction in its early stages and turn away in time, but you're being plain ignorant now.

Addiction can be a type of mental disorder, by the way.

Anti-social also has very little to do with how you spend your time, and more with how you feel about how you spend your time. You can go out every day and get drunk out of your socks and still be anti-social.

/agree but if you look at any mmo its a fantasy, its a escape and some people just dont know when to quit. But as time goes on and technology is getting better it seems there are more and more behavorial problems that keep coming up... And its to bad that some people use it as a scapegoat eg: people sueing McDonalds saying it made them fat, well DUH! everything there is fried. Samething goes with video games people need to take responsibility for their actions, and in a case like this its sad but give him a darwin award.

sorry probably a little off topic but thats how i feel about video game addicts, i am sure a herion addict would gladdly switch addictions anyday.

So mental disorders are 'your own fault' now?

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I didn't mean depression is your own and only fault. I mean that compulsive gaming comes from personal problems, not from the game. The solution to recover from compulsive gaming is different for each other. It's your personality, your personal situation at the moment and relationships that makes you compulsive gamer or not. So that's were you must seek the root of the problem if you want to resolve it. Games are only a way it expresses. It could be a lot of other occupations. I can tell you that someone trying to escape reality through games, if you shut off the computer, they will not come back to reality but will find another way.

Also addiction is a term for drugs, defining a physiological dependance. If you redefine it to include mental dependance, I'm ok, but first of all what is mental dependance? And secondly why are we talking about internet and gaming addiction and not book addiction. Not all books are smarter than video games. Not even speaking of TV. Then if that defines pretty much everything, should we worry about addictions?

but you're being plain ignorant now.

No need to go personal. We're not arguing over EE and Bishops.
Does this topic personaly touch you or someone near you?
This man may have died from an addiction but it wasn't gaming.

330lbs for christ sake put down that 4th helping of tempura and take a salad.
Take those words to heart strom!

The same type of mentally addicting actions can occur in a variety of things. If you get kicks out of gaming it could be no different from getting kicks out of sex. Just like gambling addiction etc. It is simply ignorant to suggest otherwise.

There are different categories for mental disorders but yes they can be "your fault." Some inhaled chemicals destroy the brain either directly through a chemical process or deprivation of oxygen. Others are genetics and can not be blamed on the person.
If you're [censored] up in the head, run with it, or attempt to change it. Life is what you make it, and if someone disagrees with your actions, they can either try and change your actions, or just say the hell with it. But just because someone thinks your way of living life is wrong, doesn't make it wrong on all accounts.
i am alwas told only 5% of your life you chooise your self rest are chosen of others
that dude did not die by gamenig he died being to fat (hearth) probleems for sure and sinds gameing request a other form of training he just cant take the presure

On the contrary, if a sufficient number of people think it is wrong to a high enough degree, you get thrown in prison.

witchcraft and the dark ages can hardly be compared to computer addiction and the atomic age....

the lines are blurry for many, distinct for few.

Your expertise at saying nothing should have you well prepared for a career in politics.

But throwing you in prison would be changing your actions, wouldn't it? Or at least attempting to do something about it.
