well which one is the most populated? i thought devianne was scarce on players...and yea gustin looks to be one of the most populated ones besides the EURO and hindemith.
The main difference between lionna and the other servers is that there are two actual sides as opposed to somewhere like bartz where the competition is small and half hearted.
Hindemith is doing quite well. Plenty of warring factions and the hate and discontent is at a high level. A lot of people like to make vids of their pvps so it is fun to watch as well.
dev has a rather full population of 75+. like the spud mentioned, a lot of them got there on magic carpets. if you like competing with cheaters 24/7, speak a semi-fluent string of greek swears everywhere you go, and want to play a necro or hawkeye, you'll fit right in.

Lionna has one large alliance made up of 3 old alliances fighting 3 alliances made up from 4 or 5 alliances.
The 3 alliances complain because they can never find the one alliance to pvp them and then one alliance revel in their frustration and ninja them.
Eventually the 3 alliances will probably end up being 1 large alliance and one small alliance, the large alliance will fight the existsing large alliance and the small alliance will get killed by both large alliances.
And thats only the warring clans...now lets talk about the neutrals i.e. those not part of the 1 ally vs 3 ally fight...
And we're just a rp server, its just some people actively rp and others dont realise theyre rping intelligent courageous people ;)
How is Lionna an RP server? The top clans are not RP clans... and the majority of the server does not even RP. In fact... seasons went by between sightings of RPers... and I played that server for well over two years. I've heard more claims of Lionna being an RP server than actual RPers.... where do people get this idea from?

Hindemith definitely is the "dysfunctional family" server. And it does seem to have a higher population than most of the other non-Bartz NA servers. I've also found it to be one of the more newbie-friendly servers.
I just came back to L2 a few days ago. Each night I've played I've met several nice players, and one each night made it to my Friends List.
Last night I met a brand new player and we ended up chatting all night. I answered (as best I could) her questions about getting started in L2 and we both had fun talking about mmo-stuff. We're going to duo in SoDA this weekend.
So, on that small sample, I'd say Lionna is still the (overall) nice server I remembered from last year and before.
Lionna is also the unofficial rp server, so if you have interest in rp (or even just getting into having a backstory for your character) Lionna is a good server for that.
Lionna does have a reallynice community for new players, there are plenty of smaller, more relaxed clans that won't put you in a hurry to level and will be more than happy to have you in their academy.
