Now before you get all bent out of shape the offical language of l2 in NA is english.
I was wondering if this is considered spam i mean its really **** annoying to see hero chat spammed for hours without one word in english that can be understood, and when i do get someone to translate it I found out half things they are talking about in foreign languages are bannable offenses if they were said in english.
Is there a remedy for this or is it ok to talk in hero chat about people's mothers sex other lude things botting ebaying and other illegal activities as long as it isnt in english?
Regular shout is one thing but hero shout is suppose to be closely montiored since its seem in the whole game world, so what gives?
if its annoying turn it off... all they ever spam on my server is WTS XXXX pm XXXX... or the normal HAHAHA XXXX bsoe LMAO... personally i leave it off its dumb.
And does the EULA prohibit the use of your own native language, hmm? As long as it is not said in the EULA very clearly then they can use whatever language they choose to when talking to each other. You cannot force English only -chatting when the game has lots of international players, on ALL servers, not just Teon and Franz.
And as jkoster said, ss it and send it in if you suspect that they're violating the EULA by trashtalking etc. After that, it just depends on NCSoft if they can even translate it ;)
POINT i was trying to make half the heros on devianne would be perma banned if they said what they said in english, i mean one hero was telling someone how to setup walker in hero chat in a foriegn language, its getting a little out of hand that if someone mentions a bot program in english even in pms they can get banned but global chat is ok as long as its not english.
well NC wont do a thing if something is said in another language
doesnt matter if they are talking about botting ebaying or your mother
its prolly fair enough too because there are alot of languages out there and you cant expect the GMs to know every single swear work in a few hundred dialects
as for speaking other languages - who cares if it gets annoying just turn it off
I'll have to say you should not be allowed to say things that the GMs can't screen in hero chat - i.e. no language that the GM team doesn't understand, probably same for shout and trade.
Why did you pick three of the least spoken european languages ?
In Europe it is English, Spanish, German... then french.. And even if you are finnish, I doubt, your language is spoken anywhere out of Finland on a regular basis ;)
Because those are the three languages other than English that I speak at the moment. And since we're as much part of Europe as German or Spain or Belgium we deserve the same. Service in our own language.
So, the GM team has some learning to do, or alternatively they need to hire people who actually can speak more than 1 language, fluently.
PS. French is spoken more than any of the nordic languages, or those used in Estonia, Latvia or Liethuania. And it is one of the world languages, altho smaller than English but still. So cant really say "three of the least spoken european languages" :)
Btw, Finnish is spoken on a regular basis in atleast Australia and USA since both have been the destination of immigrants(large scale migration) in the past and there's even still people who know their own language. You can see this by looking at the names of towns and places in some parts of the USA for example.
When farmers were really, really bad, so bad most of us learned at least a string of Chinese phrases, they use to say insults and other curses all the time. We were told you could say whatever you wanted as long as it wasn't in English.
Most of the 'heroes' on Lionna (at least that ones that post in Hero Chat) are annoying to the nth degree. They either use it as a trade channel or as an avenue to brag about their pvp wins.
I leave it on because one day I will be strong enough to track them down and take them out, so I'm making a list. A long list.
EDIT: I have also seen 'heroes' posting in foreign languages or in code. To be totally honest, the 'heroes' on Lionna (again, the ones that post in Hero chat anyway) are very disappointing. You never see them posting helpful things, or organizing mass pvp or anything remotely cool. They're basically just merchants with super-sized pvp egos.
Clearly until we hear from Lisail and Bhodasative on this topic---almost every comment here is "meaningless" and a "non-factor".
I'll have to wait for them to tell me my opinion. Only players 76+ and higher should be commenting here.
If you don't have a toon at that level or higher please pull your own post.
ONLY opinions from 76+ players have 'meaning' and are a 'factor'.
Let's wait to see the enlightened words from our betters (lmao)....................

Actually, one of the people playing Benimaru used to run trivia nights on Hero chat. It was pretty cool.
I've only been back to L2 for a little over a week, so I don't have much to go by. Just posting what I've seen so far. And 90% of the time Hero chat is basically a WTS or WTB channel, with the occasional pvp bragging thrown in. And (on topic) once in a while there are Hero posts in a foreign language or pure gibberish (possible code) talking about who-knows-what.
Actually, if I remember correctly, for world statistics, there are more people who's mother language is French than English. On the other hand, there are more people who speak English as a secondary language. So there are more French than English, even though more people speak English than French ;)
And if you need a translator to know they're swearing, why make such a big fuss? If anything, it's the people who actually know those languages that should petition. :P

I guess the solution is to either turn hero chat off (if it gets spammy) or maybe the heros will police their own channel <shrugs> It's the same as when you enter a town with lots of shouts going on. . I just turn them off :p
Lets see if someone is so fanatical that he will try to translate that.

Mostly it's greek, no code. Though on Lionna after a big PVP MartelX tends to make an RP story out of it and recite it in hero shout. It's not code he's just that way. Just what, pray tell, do you think hero shout SHOULD be used for?.
Da tou, da tou,
Xia yu bu chou.
Ren jia you san,
Wo you da tou!
but serriously, it wouldnt kill them to hire just on GM that knows greek, speciffically to clean up hero chat on devainne. they can always be put on bo****ch, if not on hero duty.
Okey, so they now can monitor Greek then. What about Russia, German, French etc? If we follow the same line, then NCSoft needs to hire a big bunch of ppl just to translate all the different languages used by the players, or buy translation services.
Much easier to let it just be, which will prolly be the NC decision too ;)

It doesn't matter what I think it should be used for, I'm just a lowbie.
I just know when I came back and saw that I now had a 'Hero Channel' and I turned it on... it wasn't what I expected. I probably *should* have expected it to be what it is, but I didn't. That's more on me than anything else.
I guess, ideally, it would be used sparingly. Maybe to announce when people hit major levels (like 70 and 80), or to announce the defeat of a major raid boss, or to proclaim large inter-clan warfare, stuff like that.
Seeing it used as a trade-and-brag channel is a little... disappointing. That's all. But, believe me: I get it: who am *I* to judge?
you have to see it, you have just a much right to complain as anyone else. It IS used for major RB's on lionna, baium, antharas if someone gets their act together and does it. It's used for big PVP's all the time. Admitedly Mesphito has made it into a spam channel but generally you only hear from people after a fight.
People are all spread out now, so it's an easy way to give ocasional trade messages and even more common on lionna are mammon locations. It does no good to say what something should not be if you don't have an idea of what it should be.

That's cool. I guess I just haven't been on when its been used in that way!

I didn't want to name names, but, yeah...

I can understand that.

Well, like I said in my previous post, I pretty much thought it would be used for major announcements (like RB's, significant level milestones, clan warfare). But, you're telling me it is used for that on Lionna, so like I said: I guess I just haven't seen it yet. My bad. No disrespect intended!
That trash talking you see is the aftermath of PVP. Lots of greeks on both sides and trust me it's a lot faster to type in your native language. My greek is woeful to say the least but most of the greek in hero voice is identical to what people say in english.
Actualy I have seen on Lionna seen them mention where Blacksmith and Merchant of Mamon is at at a certian time. But I only turn hero chat on... when I need to find those two. Otherwise I have it turned off. As I could care less about the other crap that is said on it.
Hey Kiroth, can we start a petition in the alliance to never let Mesphito have Hero Again? I swear..if I get noble and nobody has removed him yet, Im feeding points to Fusion so he never has it >.<
Seriously, this is a very interesting dilemma for MMO's. I suspect that NC Soft NA has had a discussion concerning this in the past and has chosen not to address the issue. However, I'm willing to bet this will become a priority for gaming companies (and other worldwide social ventures) in the near future.
A couple of points of interest I'd like to make:
English is the required language for International Pilots (not suggesting we make English a requirement, just a similar situation).
Every MMO already has it's own language, derived from the gameworld and simple abbreviation logic. i.e. WTB, WTS. Who outside Lineage would know WTH a WTS AOBA/BOP/SOV-Acu meant?
Swearfilter? just a peice of software? so just add those words that some find so offencsive and most don't understand and we have seen how much certain partys care about 3rd party software.
The swear filter already makes it impossible to converse in normal, polite Japanese. I certainly don't want it to become even more intrusive. :) However, I don't get how you can play this game - much less become a hero - without knowing at least some basic English.
Uh, lol? What's that got to do with a foreign language? >.>
Anyway... while seeing people talk it up in a language I can't understand is annoying... it's really not all that big of a deal to me. But if they are doing so to bypass whatever rules are in place for the game... then that's just as bad as doing so in English. I'm not saying they can't speak their native tongue, by all means have at it if it makes you feel more comfortable with the environment... but just don't do so to make useless the rules everyone else has to follow.
When farmers were really, really bad, so bad most of us learned at least a string of Chinese phrases, they use to say insults and other curses all the time. We were told you could say whatever you wanted as long as it wasn't in English.
Then they would not be allowed to speak on hero chat at all, if it were english only, and I could very well live with it.
And as for all europeans being the same... We already are. There is no support other than the english one. There is no rule enforcement for anything that was said in a non-english language.
That is the same for french, spanish, greek, russian, german, finnish, swedish, italian... and every other of the few dozen languages we speak in europe. Hiring a universal translater for every little language, that might have a player on Lineage2 is just not feasible, so the options are either:
1. Do not enforce any rules about foreign languages (everything but english being foreign here)
2. Do ban every other language than english from certain channels, like Hero Chat e.g.
Currently NCsoft is running a policy on #1 and it does work.
(...) That is the same for french, spanish, greek, russian, german, finnish, swedish, italian... and every other of the few dozen languages we speak in europe. (...)
The "few dozen" would be 195, not counting Latin, sign languages, and dialects not recognised as own languages despite their native speakers' feelings.
Of course, there are about the same number of languages spoken in Nord America alone, too, and they also are getting ignored by NCSoft. :) (You'd think they at least have a few people on staff which know the most common, like Spanish, French or Cantonese).
How about not banning for anything at all that is said in game?
If english speaking people cannot say something no one should be allowed to say those things. The point that is being missed almost everyone who speaks foriegn languages on my server speaks fluent english also. And if you ask why they speak in their native tounge its to avoid the language filter and getting banned.
BTW last i checked l2 NA is english only text.... so if you cannot read english how do you play l2?
I wouldn't mind to lift swear filters. People are going out of their way to circumvent them all the time anyway. Getting language filters enforced is in my opinion just a waste of GM ressources, that could be better spent anywhere else.
Until then however, I will stick to typing "blödes *********", wenn someone really gets on my nerves, as I know, that I can not be banned for it, and I do not give a **** about wheter they understand me or not. They only need to catch, that it was meant as a curse :)
All the OP is really pointing out is that there exists a double standard and a stop should be put to it. It doesn't really matter how. It's always seemed pretty lame to me when someone takes advantage of a loophole to violate the rules, then complains when the loophole is taken away. If the only language filter that NCsoft has is in English, then it should be the only language used in the game. I get so tired of the "I can do anything I want to you, but you can't to the same to me" crowd. A double standard is a double standard and they should fix it. For those naysayers out there you don't have to like it ... either grow up or just go away.
Insulting people in Gaelic and non-American (though, surprisingly, English) slang is a lot of fun, actually. I've been doing it since OB on these very forums.
