A spoil is a skill used by a scavanger or Bounty hunter which allows to gain certain items from mobs that don't or rarely drop.
It has a certain chance to land and when it does the mob will turn blue flashing upon death which then allows the Scavanger or Bounty hunter to sweep it and obtain a random spoilable item.
So if someone tells you that a certain item is only in spoil, it means you will need a dwarf with the spoiling ability to get it for you.I hope that makes sence :)

the skill spoil is given to low lvl dwarves and if you choose the scavenger - bounty hunter class path you get higher lvls of it
if you use the spoil skill on a monster it has a chance that you can get extra items from the mob when it dies

Hehe, and since the first levels of spoil and sweep(the skill used to collect the spoiled drops) are given to dwarves before the first class change, both Artisan/WS and Scavenger/BH can spoil and sweep, altho the latter will have much better chances at it.
