Here's some of the dirt on the biggest Interlude change you've been waiting for.
Note #1) In game it is not called 'Refinement', instead in the usual L2 translation quirkiness, it is referred to as "Augmentation". In my usual stubborness I am simply going to keep referring to this as 'refining' though as its easier to type....just like the whole "Paagrio" retranslation junk.
Drop rate: Ok I subbed a Spellhowler, and went from L40 to L45. In this time I only got one "Life Stone" as a drop. Off a 'weird drake' for those who care, although the Kr notes pretty much indicated all mobs can drop them. So low, but not completely unknown drop rate. (I have not yet got a full drop even at PTS rates, so estimate away if you will.)
Ok, to add a refinement to your weapon you need three things.
1)A weapon [Doh!]
2)A life stone
3)Some Gemstones [You have no idea how many until you get both of the above!]
Once you have a life stone you may proceed. I got a "Life Stone: Level 46" (Weight 2) And it was golden(brown) colored. (More on the color later.)
Take your life stone to any blacksmith. (I just happend to be in Oren.) Scroll down his list of options and find the one to Augment a weapon. Here is where things are initially a bit confusing due to lack of explanations.
1) You are presented with a single window that has three icons in it. All three are initially greyed out (with am item outline in the background) and they are in order from top left, top right and middle bottom [Weapon][Life Stone][Gemstones]. There is also a [Augment] and [Terminate] button at the bottom.
[Terminate] = 'Cancel'. So whenever you see that, it is what you choose if you don't want to do anything and close the windows.
The first icon [weapon] will have a little yellow blinking pointer (triangle) above it. DRAG your chosen weapon onto this icon. When done, the icon of the weapon you dragged over will sit in that spot and the little blinking triangel will move over to the [Life stone] spot. Drag your life stone onto this spot as well. NOW, the third will be highlighted and you can finally see how many gemstones it will take to apply the refinement. Note down the number, click [Terminate], buy enough Gemstones and repeat the process. Once you have all three items placed, go ahead and click "Augment".
That's IT. You now have an "Augmented" weapon. You may note at this point, that you have NO choice in what the results are.
For my test I was using an [Ecliptic Sword:Empower], my refinement cost was 20 D grade gemstones. (23K cost at base tax rate in Oren.) What I got using my [Life stone: Level 46] [Golden] was:
The Mdef bonus works like the Empower SA, it is added on to your total Mdef after eveything else is calculated. (Although your stat window doesn't show the .1 part)
The Mp recovery stat doesn't say if its .1% or .1 per 'tick'. This one is going to be harder to determine, although I suspect it is .1 per tick.
The ACC bonus is pretty much what it says. =P
Ok, that is all well and good, but what if you don't like the refinement? Well you can take it back to the Blacksmith and he will remove it for a fee. How much you say? Well for my weapon w/refinement the cost would be 210,000. That is roughly 10x the cost to remove as to apply.
Oh, and I did not recieve any 'glow' to my augmented weapon. Which from what I recall of the blah notes, is only given when using the higher quality life stones to refine.
Now, about the 'color' of the life stones and their properties. Going by what I remember from the blah notes and my experience here these are what my initial thoughts are on the stone variations. I could be wrong so post what you used and what you got if your playing the PTS!
1) Determines the "Type" of refinement your weapon gets. I've seen golden (mine) as well as Silver and Black in screenshots, I don't know if any more exist. I currently have no definate lists of what goes where on possible results...
2)[Quality] Mine had no 'quality' assigned to it, although I've seen screens where some are listed as 'High Quality'. (More information needed!) The Quality of the stone also give a greater chance of 'better' results.
3)[Level] Mine was L46 and from all notes so far, this is the LOWEST stone you can get. Also, your character must be at least this level to APPLY (not use) the effect to a weapon. (Per blah notes). So applying a L76 stone and using it on a L40 subclass is possible. (Can't confirm yet.) The level of the stone also determine the base (lowest) results of the refinement attempt.
-----
I really wish they would be more consistent in their translations. A lot of things get new names with every new update, and especially with new buff names, it gets confusing. I have a hard enouh time remembering what the orc buffs are called  Not to mention hunting areas.
and You CAN store your weapon in WH but CANT do anything else to get rid of it ?
Yes, you can store the weapon in the WH. You can't put it in the CWH (Doesn't show in the list.) Nor can you drop it, you get the message "The Augmented Item cannot be discarded" instead.
I used a lvl 70 Agument stone 30 D gemstones and a SoV acumen and ended up with lol :
+34.7CP (aproxemetly was 30 sumething and had a ,
+9,9 Crit rate (lol on mage weapon)
+0.1 mp regen (cant rember if this is % wich would be LOL or something else)
Not much for a stone i had to pay tons of cash to get....

What color was the life stone? Was it golden like mine?
What was the quality (aka How was the stone named) and what was the potential removal fee?
Thanks for the info. However, two quick questions: (a) the initial notes made it seem like you got to choose from which "type" of augmentation you would use, then it was random in this type. Your screenies made it appear you just augment and whatever happens, happens. Did you "choose" a category first?; (b) How many "augments" can you have? I mean, if you have the $$ can you just keep adding more and more, or is "1" the limit? Thanks!
It was totally random. My stone was like brown or black don't rember if i saw any quality on it and havent checked for removal fee. I heard that if u agument and OE'd weapon u get the fansy sparkels and glow.....
Made subclass gladiator and hunted in enchanted valley. From 40-49 I got total 9 crystals (5 black, 4 brown). Tried some of them (thought ill try till i get at least some decent thing out of it). My results are fallowing, **** i didnt put down the colors of it, but seems like it doesnt really matter:
1. TRY
CP +41
MP recovery +0.1
CP +54.7
2. TRY (thought already of keeping it, but...)
HP +42
MP +13,1
P.Def +7.3
M.Def +5,9
3. TRY
M.Def +8,6
HP + 42
CP +79,5
4.TRY
HP + 33,2
MP rec +0.1
HP rec +0.3
5.TRY
MP + 10.3
HP rec +0.1
HP +42
6.TRY
P.Atk +4.8
Accuracy +0.9
MP +13.1
And I thought thats good enough and kept it this way :)
So I have 2 more to try now when im going to change to b-grade and putting it to my next duals :P
Quite a minor improvements exept for +90cp and +5 p.atk. Those there the best i think.
I really hope high quality stones will give the weapon atlest 3x better numbers
Well, thanks to everyone who posted their findings.
It seems that there are a lot of random results of varying usefulness. This makes a lot of sense as the entire game has this love of "chance" imbued within it.
At least this means that there is a possibility to get something that is wanted at 'some point' in the process.

A) AFAIK, the only choice you have is what color stone to use. Each color has it's own set of random results that do not overlap with the other colors. Which is why I wish people would post what color stones they try, so we can figure out what results are possible for each color stone.
B)I've only gotten one stone so far, but I thought the Kr notes indicated you could put more than one refinement on them. ...will test this if I get more.
That is really sad, i don't think that unlimited agumentations would make the game highly imbalanced. If not ulimited than limit up the upgrades up to 4 or more, not just 1. Or, since this game full of chanses of failure almost at everything, they may make each agumentation to fail, or add negative effects... Lets say your weapon after first agumentation becomes:
+4 p.atk
+30 hp
+0.2 hp regeneration
After second agumentation, each of these abilites has a random chanse to increase or decrease, so it may become:
No you can't, just do the most simpliest test, an argumented weapon cannot be putted on the weapon slot :P You even get a system msg
"Once an item is augmented it cannot be agumented again."
Ah, just got another stone and found that out myself.
I was back in HV after leveling a alt for some other testing, and this one came off a Weird Drake as well. SO, I think we can assume at this point that either:
A) Only certain mobs drop the stones
B)Certain mobs have MUCH higher rates at dropping the stones.
I did about the same amount of XP over in the Timak outpost and got Zero stones.
Back to the new stone, this one was a "Mid-Grade Life Stone: Level 46" It was colored [Black].
After removing the old augment, I added the new one. The price to add the effect this time was the same as the first one, so stone quality doesn't appear to affect the gemstone cost.
The effect this time was:
Maximum MP +27.5
Dodge +0.9
Pdef +7.2
Maximum HP +16.5
imho the color has something to do w/ the grade of the Life Stone
(normal) --> gold/brown
mid-grade --> black
high-grade --> ???
and another thing about the lvl of them; i would say they increase in steps of 3 lvl. highest ones i saw as drop was a lvl76 ones at mos and pagan, lowest possible lvl could be 40 but i didn't see one yet
possible row of lvl's: (40) --> (43) --> 46 --> 49 .... 67 --> 70 --> (73) --> 76
i would say life stone lvl depends on the mobs lvl; i got a lvl70 one at WoA from a green mob and saw a lvl76 at MoS and Pagan as drop from light red mobs ;)
Ok, got a bunch more life stones, but haven't used them yet.
Most 'normal' ones are all L46 and brown.
The one Mid-Grade one is L46 and black.
I got one L49 normal and it is brown.
Still not certain if color=quality, but it is a possibility at this point.
I also got a few off the Lakin and one off a Formor. (or a Tarlk Bugbear...not sure now.) So it appears that all mobs might have a chance to drop them, as long as the level of the mob is high enough. (Kronbe must just be a bit too low.)
I'm holding back on trying the stones out, until after I hit B grade I think. 210K each! (and I have about 6 in inventory) to remove each is a bit much if I want to make sure I can craft my B grade...
Wow this is worst than trying to crack a pinata while blind folded and ears plugged. Grats to the lucky ones who get good stats. I can see a lot of weapons leaving the market once they get good augments. Can't wait how long the first haxed augmented weapons come out. Someone's going to have a +10K matk, +10K patk, +10K hp, +10K mdef... LOL
Anyway, I don't know the cap on this but the augments are ripe for this kind of abuse because each seem to be unique.
So far I'm really starting to think color=grade. No idea about the different graphic on the L76 stone though.
Anyhow, used the L49 brown stone on my Wizards Tear now that I'm in B grade...and sold the rest.
Barring any true economy or market for these I sold them based on how much it costs to remove the Augmentation and multiplied by grade. So I sold the L46 Browns for 210K and the L46 Black (Mid Grade) for 420K. (2 * 210K to remove.)
I hope someone got a good result from them!
My L49 stone, gave me:
MP Recovery +0.1
Chance: Reduce Atk.Speed on Magical Attack.
Woot! Something new! Not terribly useful, but not completely useless either. (If your getting beat on that is.) The text color for this new mod was a dark pink. I'll go back and check the removal fee later...
After crafting the rest of my B gear (Black Ore jewelry), I am staying with the C grade Demon Robes and FP shield for now. I headed up to Forsaken Plains (Wind weak!) for my last stretch of the night. I got one more stone drop up there, before calling it quits. A L55 Brown....more to come later.
Well with the possibilty of dropping so low at red even abuse would still be hard. But it would appear if you drop it on the ground or can not drop it, would mean that a red can not drop it. The no drop point would most likely apply no matter what.
Maybe a red just can't equip an augmented weapon.
But I guess he wouldn't drop it either, it would stay in his inventory. Else, if you could drop it while red, it would be a way to avoid the removing fee :)
Oh wait, or maybe you can't go red while using an augmented weapon or having one in inventory. You can pk all you like and stay white... Hmm no?
Oh wait, or maybe you can't go red while using an augmented weapon or having one in inventory. You can pk all you like and stay white... Hmm no?
lol yeah
but i still hope they dont make it like the zariche where if you die it just magically disapears
there are far too many reasons to go red and i wouldnt want my 500 gazillion dollar weapon going poof just cause someone decided to kill me while i was red
It would be a good idea to be able to lose the weapon when red, but also the augmentation should be lost... When red you have chances of dropping items, the risk should be the same with augmented swords, otherwise permareds would roam low level areas with augmented dragonic bows and would not have any problem as their weapon would not be dropped...
Well I got 7 life crystals on my sub bh that were either lvl 46 or 49. So I gave them to my SE which was still 77. The first two I used were the black, mid-grade, life stones. Best from those two was:
+8.6mdef
26.9hp
12.1 critical
I then used the brown, normal, life stones that were mostly all lvl 46. The best one I got from them was (I kid you not)
MP regeneration +.1
HP regeneration +.1
Chance: Momentarly petrify the target during a critical attack.
This refinement was pink color, no glow or sparkle to the weapon (which was an arcane mace). I was stupid and removed that skill from it to use the other stones before testing it the chance!
But I will go ahead and post the screen shot of this refinement and all the others within the next 24hrs on LineageJunkies.com if any of you wanna check them out.
think ill be the first to say this man
worst pole augmentation ever!!!!
yeah thats just what a pole class wants, spend 2 minuets killing 20 mobs then spend another 2 minuets killing the one mob you petrified :/
just made 52 to 53,5 in 1 buffround on pts, no healer needed , just buffs...
i have no idea what it does, but i had no visible"petrified" mobs.. only thing i noticed was that i dont got hurt alot, with 30-40 mobs in pavel ruins.
Could be cute in PvP though, few AoE hits in your ennemies, and then they'll be un-petrifying at other times so your team can go 9 vs 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 instead of 9 vs 9.
It may be like an anchor, not like medusa.. Like you just paralyze the mobs and can still do damage to them.. Then it'll be an awesome weapon for sieges.
Their mana regen tables (or perhaps mana costs) need some serious work...
Sadly enough a spellsinger would get more DPS increase over longer periods of time with the +5Patk... No I am not kidding... what do you think the Sps is doing while their mana is empty? (which is more often than not)
Figure an OL or WC would get ONE extra drain each 90 minutes...
While I understand that too much here would unbalance it... it would be nice if the bonuses were better than "almost nonexistant".
If you get +5patk and +1accuracy and +10 crit rating, thats a nice little bonus... at least a +1% bonus to overall damage output.
+0.1 mana regen and +0 mana regen are so closely related that it kinda ceases to matter.
Too lazy to post screenshots, but I put a 67 brown lifestone on my arcana mace and got +8.8 m.atk and +10.8 p.atk.
At first I thought it was cool, but it turns out it only adds those numbers after all your buffs etc are calculated, so I went from 1400ish m.atk to 1400ish+8.8. (similar results with the p.atk)
Tried my steal essence on a wyrm in fp and did about 30 damage difference between my regular arcana mace and the augmented one.
From what I see so far, brown life stones will most probably be sold off to npcs :)
Has anybody been able to figure out what the 0.1 mp regen (for example) means? That's such a low number...
no clue but it could mean alot or very little, on a 54 WL i regen 5 mana a tick out of 826 total, which is about 0.0061%.
could it be like a 10% increase to that number. if so the regen rate would be 0.0067% and mp regened per tick would be 5.5. just a thought
My results with a Drac bow and High grd stone lv 70: http://www.costaesousa.com/guides/refinepts
Looks kinda odd thingie but I made it as a guide for some ppl who asked...so scroll to the end to see the effects :P
From the reports on other sites, it seems only the higher 'grade' stones give a glow. There is some confusion on if the resulting augment needs to be a a certain 'type' (color) as well.

well i used a lvl 70 stone do you mean grade as in color?
does glow mean better refinement?

The grade of the stone has nothing to do with the level. For any given level (46,70, whatever) you can get 'normal' ones, 'Mid-grade' ones, 'High-Grade' ones and 'Special Grade' ones. (Only grades I am aware of.)
The 'grade' of a stone is always given as the pre-fix and the level of the stone is a postfix. Thus:
"High-Grade Life Stone: Level 70" OR
"Mid-Grade Life Stone: Level 46"
Are possible life stone drops. From what I've heard, it sounds like the 'glow' is only coming if you use a high or special grade stone, although there was also some confusion if the color of the resulting mods (text color after refinement) had anything to do with the glow for the mods that show up the least. (Color or appearance of the glow.) I'n not sure if the actual color of the stone makes any difference, or if it is based just on the grade/level of the stone.
