I have a quick question on polearms, I have seen many players pull 10-20 mobs at once while using a pole and take them down, and most of this is done in the catacomb's.
Do they always hit multiple mobs at once, or only when using the skill's? I have tried to use a pole and the only time it hit multiple mobs was when I used the skill, and there has to be time for recharge of the skill so I don't see how they live through that.
Is there a certain build or class I should say for a poler, if so what is it may I ask?
Dwarves, Destroyers and Warlords are the pole classes. With polearm masteries you can hit more mobs than the classes that dont have them.
All classes can hit several mobs at a time with poles, it just requires positioning. Get the mobs and run into a corner, so that all the mobs need to get close to you. Then whack at the central mob. Some SAs also increase the area of your swings.
If the mobs are inside your arc you can hit them all without using a skill. When playing a poler your arc will increase as you gain levels. You don't say what level/class/race you are; all of those will affect how many mobs you'll hit at a time. In general, try to pull to a corner, or at least against a wall, and target the mob furthest from you.
Additionally, I would recommend keeping your damage chat on so that you can see for certain how many mobs you are hitting at a time. If it's too few, try repositioning/retargeting. Make sure to keep next-target on your hotbar it helps a TON!
make sure you have them in a line before you run into the corner so they will stack in one spot. You don't want them to arc all around you especially if you have the normal poling area (ie. your not a poler class).
with pole masteries you should be able to hit pretty much every mob that will ever enter your arc
as a swordsinger with a pole I cannot hit all the mobs I pull at one time...which means I either need to pull smaller or be able to tank the damage reasonably well...By hitting just what mobs I could i used to be ble to deal so much damage from those few that i could tank the damage from all, but with les damage output from my new setup I don't vr fast enough and continually lose hp 8/
If you're out in the field run the mobs next to a barrier so they line up to get to you. Like if there's only one tree then run next to the tree and get just a little past it. The mobs will stack like cupcakes. The interlude patch is supposed to change this so mobs don't stack up but spread out. You'll have to ask someone poling PTS for that.
Yup I've been poleing with my dwarf that I brought up from scratch (on pts) and the rules have changed, they tend to move to your sides and spreap out more now. The sugestion about a tree is (will) no longer be viable after update, corner still works but sometimes requires alittle repositioning to be effective and masteries are a BIG plus. So I think unless conditions are in your favor I wouldn't invest a lot of adenda in a new polearm. It's too bad because that type of hunting can be a lot of fun and rewarding. As an afterthought I haven't tried this is a party so maybe a sandwich tatic might work ok. But any way gl and have fun.
Uhm, shouldn't the fact that mobs don't just stand around and let you hit them en masse but instead try to flank you and whatnot be taken as a good thing? From, your description of how things work in PTS now, Poles just seem a lot more challenging (which I think is pretty cool), perhaps requiring coordination of several individuals, but certainly not impossible.
Or does the new system remove all the fun? I really don't know as I have yet to try it.
It makes it harder to pole in fields or other open areas. It also lessens the dps even in catas since you will be hitting less mobs at the same time, so exp wise its a bad thing.
True it does make it more initeresting, but from the standpoint of a dorf it is just another gimp in an over gimped toon with a lack of any real good pve/pvp skills (can of worms). On another not do magic aoe users get a gimp like mobs disperse??
Well tried in feild wiith grandis against wall and was not as bad as I thought it would be. I didn't die with 5 on me but had lvl 77 ss with me 4 heals.
