I just purchased this game yesterday.
Out of curiousity I am wondering how populated each server is. I was playing and there hardly seemed to be many players around, does this mean that not many people play or just that the area I start of in isnt one of the places people actually hang around. But I have played other MMOs and people are constently making new characters so the fact that not many people play makes me wonder, so can anyone inlighten me on the sigguation?
people do constantly make new characters, but thanks to newbie buffs and the effect of top grade gear that older players already have, we can get our new characters to level 20 in a few hours, whereas someone new to the game will spend three days to two weeks doing the same thing. take this time to do some quests, figure out what class you want to be, and learn the interface. if you mention what sever you are on, chances are that someone here will stop to chat and answer questions for you.

I started last Wednesday using an old trial key that came with City of Villains and I'm definitely sticking around. I think judging ANY MMO older than 2 years old by the activity of its newbie zones is extremely short-sighted. Go to Giran and tell me the game's "dead" (jeez, took like 45 seconds just to load all the people). Most MMOs aren't set up like, say, a WoW, where the newbie areas are basically right next to major hubs (Goldshire -> Stormwind, Teldrassil -> Darnassus, etc) so it can be a bit before you run into a screen full of people.
I've seen a few folks with extremely well geared alts (well, I'm guessing they were well geared, 1 and 2 shotting stuff that I was struggling with :p) but it's to be expected with subclassing systems. The same thing (pretty much) happened in EQ2 when it used the same system. And from what I'm told, "the grind" gets a lot worse higher up so I can't fault anyone for wanting to skip grinding at the very beginning of the character's life.
From what I've seen (I spent my first day bouncing around checking out various servers), Bartz seems like it's the most populated server and Hindemith isn't too far behind either. The EURO servers always seem packed when I actually pay attention to them. Telo seems HEAVY (or Normal, at worst) even during US primetime.

i've been playing a character with no help from my main to see if it really is possible to get best NG on your own before 20.
unfortuantely, my test was ruined by me finding 40k scatter over the ground lol so if you're lucky, you can get there fast.
once you get lvl 20, find a clan's academy to join by traveling to dion and shouting around. they'll hook you up with gear and lvling assistance hopefully
Hey there I did 1-20 with a trial key just for ***** and giggles to find out how hard it was with newbie buffs. With absolutely no help from anyone and doing starting quest...1-20 can be done in under a day of playing.
Its THAT easy now. But post 20, you want to find a good clan that willl put you in the clan academy and outfit your characters with clan academy gear (D grade) that will boost your play.
most servers have a healthy population - the servers were upgraded last year so thats why alot of servers are blue.
starter areas are thinly populated. those you do see will either be academy toons or bots. a few maybe new players just like you (indeed I saw a few folk in DE lands recently while levelling an academy toon)
