How do you keep from getting burned out?

How do you keep the fun continuing? Right now I want to log in and play whenever I can, but I know I am going to end up sometime in the next month or so getting quite bored. Then I join back like 3 months later because I feel like playing. How do you guys continue playing? I have played on and off since North American Closed beta, probably have quit and joined back like 10 times already.. Is there anyway to keep the enjoyment continuing without having to feel burned out?
1. Don't join the "Levels = fun" crowd, play for fun and let the levels come as they will

2. Figure out what is fun for you. Friends, fishing, pets, different armors, sightseeing & mountain climbing & exploring, getting rich, PvP score, owning a castle or running a clan..... Know thyself.

3. Rotate thru the fun things, don't do the non-fun ones.
Well everything goes back to leveling... You have to be high level to seige let alone PvP. I have a ton of money but what is there to spend it on besides the next grade, oh wait I have to continue leveling to actually use it... I have tried pets but they take too much from exp and that just gets annoying continuing to kill the same mobs everytime just for both you and the pet to level. All of my RL friends quit L2 and went to WoW/other games :(.
Fishing sounds fun, have yet to try it, do you have to be different levels to get bigger/better fish?
Well, I don't know about you, but I got into role-playing. Why bother developing just your levels when you can develop the person on the screen?

Have interactions with other developed characters, no longer just respond according to numbers (can I beat him? Is he higher or lower level? Is that a draconic bow with focus?), but respond according to personality and emotion (Is he one of the men that kidnapped my cousin's dog? Did he look at my strider the wrong way?)

Role-playing opens up a whole new level of depth to the game that a lot of people (I like to call them roll-players, since they focus on stats and numbers).

Just something to consider.
Personally, I would be bored in the first week if it weren't for the friends I've made. I love my clan and they keep me going strong as I look forward to the next fun group with them.

It's all about the people.

For example, while I was 'grinding' yesterday I saw a lone voice call out for advice in the elf newbie area (which I was grinding in with an alt). No one answered her !shout for help, so I did.

I helped this player, new to L2 (a recent convert from WoW) to learn the manor system. I walked her through the steps of buying seeds appropriate to her level and the levels of the monsters she was fighting. I taught her how to claim her rewards, explained the pro's/con's of selling to vendors or saving for trips to Giran. That lead to talking about all sorts of stuff. Next thing we knew we'd been chatting for hours, we added each other to our friends lists and the whole evening had gone by. A lot of that time I was still 'grinding' but it was SOOOOO much more fun and rewarding because while I was grinding I was doing something that made me feel good: helping someone else out.

It's all about the people: helping others and being helped by others, making friends, cracking jokes, pvp (esp. at higher levels, though pvp used to be more common at low levels), joining a clan, seiges...

If you only grind you will most likely burn out fast. However, if you grind PLUS do other stuff (like chat with others) it becomes so much more fun.

Even 'easy-mode' games, like WoW, are like this. In WoW you most certainly can solo grind all the way to 70 (and while much faster than in L2 its still a lot of hours). But... seriosuly: what's the point? If you really want to play alone, you may be better off with a game designed with one player in mind. L2, ultimately, is a game about community: friends, clans, alliances, seiges, warfare, pvp in the open field, RBG's, grouping.... It *can* be done solo, but solo really does seem to be the path to burn out. Been there, done that. Now, when I play, if I see someone LFG and I'm in their level range I almost always join up with up them. You usually end up making a new friend (usually... =P... not always...>_>) and its so much more interesting than just point-and-clicking the pve enemies to death, since you're part of a team.

Bonus points when I meet a fellow fan of Battlestar Galactica! =)

statement one: "You have to be high level to seige let alone PvP" is 100% false. dont care who you are, or what clan youre in pvp happens all over the aden map everyday. sometimes for clanwar, sometimes for hunting ground, sometimes cause ppl are rude, but IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. if you want to really make things interesting in pvp go run around in newbie zones and wait for some brand new lowbie to roll through asking "who are these dwarfs?" and teach him/her everything you know. take them outside and pvp, give them gear, etc.

ive been in RP clans that held inter-clan pvp challenges (best one i ever saw was lvl 54 sorc vs lvl 61 BD - BD went down in 6 hits) in places like the coliseum or private arenas like gludin where not many go.

ive participated in developing my character that i play into a successful character such that the moment i log in, my clan has something to say; give your character a life, not just a name and a skillset.

ive fished till i could fish no longer, climbed most of the mountains (best one is outside forest of mirrors) and been to the exclusive high level club.

i can tell you everything is more fun at low levels.
personaly I like to realy get to know who I am playing with =)
one grp of friends and I share life stories constantly in party chat ^^ some of mine are so insane that they hang on every word and never notice that we just did 5 buff rounds .... they are like [censored] buffs fading again lol
If i get burnt out of the game, I ussualy just take a 2 week break and go play WoW, RF Online, or FFXI. Within a few weeks I am wanting to play l2 again so bad, works perfect for me.
I agree, it is all about the people. I was pretty bored until I met a nice player who then invited me to his clan's academy. Still not a lot of people active in said clan but having at least a few people around to chat with is nice. :)

Word!
Problem: L2 burn out.
Solution: Go work more hours.

Problem: Work burn out.
Solution: Go play L2.

It's a never ending cycle with me. :D
1: pets, you got to love it rasing them is hard but it is all worth it. personaly I have not got very far but I have tried alot of times. :p

2: Fishing, it`s ok if you set a goal, like a mask or something.

3: instead of Leveling I have started to do quest... Quests keeps the xp coming and you fell like it has some goal other then just gaining that next level.

4: Find groups to hunt in catas, etc.
Really dont have to be with your friends as meeting new people can be real fun.

5. Seeding :D When I figured out (by a tip from MalineII) how to allways be able to turn in the crops at the reset.
Love to just stack up on 10.000s of animal bones and sell em for a great profit.
TIP: Do it on certain groups that dont mind you seeding there mobs.

5. Crafting. I might not be a artisan but I really dont need to be one to craft. Combine crafting + Seeding + hunting the recipe + and hunt/buy the keymats. <-- have to say this one is real fun for me, set a long tearm goal and make alot of adena or just get that weapon you allways whanted.

If i get burnt out of the game, I ussualy just take a 2 week break and go play WoW, RF Online, or FFXI. Within a few weeks I am wanting to play l2 again so bad, works perfect for me.

Fianl Fantasy XI is an awesome game
Its got a certian aspect that no other mmorpg has

Not to mention the amazing housing system and spectacularly bueatiful scenery

Lot of good answers for you above.
One other (see sig--lol)....explore characters at least a bit. Particularly if you are brand new to L2 like I was--it was hard to know about the different classes. In 13-14 months I've probably taken 20 toons to first class change just to try many of them out a bit. Let's me see a new area--learn a skill. I've retired a couple of 30+ toons in that time--an elven scout, an orc mystic, etc.

It's not for everyone--and many, many would argue you should powerlevel your main to A-grade and at least get a glimpse of some higher parts of the game as quickly as you can.
I don't regret the time I've played alts. It seems each teaches me a bit (though I'm having trouble loving that dammed cleric).
It was pretty obvious to me I would never have a 76+ subclassed toon starting 2+ years behind everyone else---I figured that out pretty fast. I decided to 1) have fun and meet others, 2) have some laughs, 3) learn to make money.

I gotta admit--getting 2% or less per buff round solo translates into some slower leveling. The clan is a big help and having other toons to play along with others is a nice break too.
(insert comment here from some uber: "2% per buff round!!!! just wait till you get 1.5% per HOUR, NOOB!")/ignore

Anyway--you can have fun a lot of ways. Watching an exp bar isn't one of them as far as I'm concerned.
Yep these ideas are just what I do, I lvl alts to try every aspect of the game and every hunting area that I can, minus the 70's and 80's areas since I haven't lvled that high.I try those areas out on private servers where getting to lvl 78 is like np,and money on those servers are never an issue either.Having ppl to talk to makes the grind go by so much easier, I tried a clan vent and even though we were all different lvls we had tons of laughs and six hours went by fast.Quests also are great things,I eat them up,lol.
Have some alts you can go and play with that have difrent play style as your main...works for me when I am getting bored. Also lvling accademy alts is fun to.

So Say We All :)

As to stay on Topic, here are some tips.

#1 . Get yourself a good hunting group that you click with.
Friends are important on L2. I play L2 because I have some of the coolest clannies that I can call friends. Clicking with someone means your style of play has to complement theirs and their style, yours. I find that I click very well with Viney or Dygger because we all like to hunt fast and chat while doing so. We ALWAYS have a blast when we hunt. Even when the entire party gets killed :)

#2. Get yourself a good clan and one that you can click with.
You could be with the most badass clan on the server, but if you don't click with them, you will be useless to them and them to you. Good clans can be an endless source of fun and joy.

#3. You will teach your fellow junior hunter the unwritten laws of Lineage2.
I like to spend time once in a while with a someone not as experienced in the game to help them learn how to improve. You need to be patient, as not everyone progresses as quickly or understands what you mean the 1st time. Don't call them N00b or the likes. I know I did not like it when others did.

#4. You will help and defend your friends and clan members.
If a friend needs help to level, I will be there to watch his back. If she needs a recipe, I will go out of my way to locate it. If he needs an item, I will hunt for it, pool adena to purchase it or contact all of my contacts to see if someone as it. If someone attacks a clan member, I will drop all I am doing to exact retribution (or at least, try to ;-) ). And most important, if a friend needs someone to talk to, I will be there to cheer them up.

Haha I am not burned out right now but I am afraid I might be later on.
Really nice suggestions, I really want to try to make a guild that have players all around the same level so we can level together.
Definitely want to try fishing as well.

Hah.

You are your own lesson on not getting burned out. We can't do you justice.

Don't level too quickly Splatter... I have to keep up with my leveling meter... (just about to hit 40% w00t)
I have been on Erica for a REALLY long time and I would hate to start over with the lack of time I have. Erica is a great server, especially for new players as well. Erica is my third server (bartz in NACB, Kain in OB and a month in retail, and then Erica for the rest) but it is my favorite.

I am thinking about making a buffer/healer and help some lower levels (that new l2 comic inspired me :p) out by grouping. I will probably will make a human for that to go back and visit my favorite place in all of L2: Talking Island :D!!

Haha Splatter, I commend you for staying this long and I hope you continue. Your really close to 40!!
